第三部分:阅读理解(共45分)

第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中选出最佳选项,每小题2分

(A) London Underground

The world’s first subway was built in London in 1863. At the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for horse carriages to get through. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of London and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to go to and from work, they would relocate their homes outside of the city. This  would help ease(减轻) the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts of London. From these problems, the idea of the London Underground, the first subway system, was born.

The plans for building the Underground met with several problems and delays, but the fast track was finally opened in January 1863. A steam train pulled the cars along the fast underground track which was 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats (standing up while the train was moving was not allowed), and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engine soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and soot(煤灰), as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding in the Underground did catch on. It carried 9 million riders in its first year.

66. What led the British government to build the London Underground?

  A. Traffic jams and pollution B.  Population and pollution.

  C. Overcrowding and traffic jams. D. The poverty and subway problems.

67. How did the London Underground solve the smoke problem?

A. It made the tunnels larger.

B. It put fans in the tunnels.

  C. It cleaned the chemical gases in the tunnels.

D. It reduced the number of passengers riding in the train.

68. The underlined phrase “catch on” most probably means “______”.

  A. be troublesome      B. become popular and fashionable

  C. keep up with       D. seize

69. It seems that the writer is going to talk about ______ in the next paragraph.

  A. more problems with subways     B. subways around the world later on

  C. the history and culture of London D. the Beijing subway

(B)

Some people are pessimistic(悲观的) when they think about the future. They say that,a hundred years from now, we will have used most of the earth’s resources. We will have polluted our seas badly, and be unable to eat fish from them. We will have made the air so dirty that we will need to wear masks. The world’s population will have doubled, and we will have used all the countryside for housing; there will be no farmland left.

Other people believe that Man adapts very easily. They have a different idea of the future. How, in their views, will people be living in a hundred years’ time?

One architect believes that Man will move off the land. He suggests that the city of the future will be a huge, pyramid-shaped building, which will be floating on the surface of the sea. About 5,000 families will be living there, and the building will contain shops and schools as well as homes. By living on the sea,we will give the farmers more land to grow crops.

As for oil, people will no longer need it: we will be heating our homes with power from the sun. And we will not be short of minerals, because there are plenty under our oceans. At the moment, we do not have the technology to get them out. But, in a hundred years’ time, the optimists say, the new sea cities will be using these resources.

What will be in the shops in the year 3000? What will people be wearing? How will people be traveling?

Scientists who make predictions about the future suggest that, by the year 3000, shops will no longer exist. Computers will have replaced them; and people will order goods from home.

People will be wearing very light, thin clothes. By this time, scientists will have invented a fabric that keeps us cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather.

As for travel, the experts say that most people will be using public transport. Electric cars will be traveling through the streets day and night. Anybody will be able to stop one and use it.

An interesting picture. Unfortunately, we will not be there to see if these predictions come true.

70. Pessimists believe that in the future ______.

  A. the seas and oceans will be full of houses

  B. we’ll have used up all the resources

  C. we will not have enough fish to eat from the seas

  D. we will have polluted the air so badly that it will be impossible for us to breath

71. Optimists suggest that ______.

  A. all the land will be too polluted to be cropped on

  B. pyramids will be the most commonly-used houses

  C. people will be using the power from the sun instead of oil

  D. we will be short of materials even though we get them from under the oceans

72. Scientists have made the predictions EXCEPT______.

A. electric cars will be going along the streets continuously

  B. the resources under the oceans will never be used up

  C. people will order from home

  D. people won’t suffer from cold any longer

Snoopy and Lou were robbers. Half a year ago, they decided to plan another bank robbery. It was to be their last one. Then they would give up this business and live a comfortable life. The job was so well done that the judge who sent them to prison for fifteen years each said it was the cleverest robbery of the century, and it was a pity that their car had used up its petrol not far from the bank.

After they were in prison for a few weeks, Snoopy and Lou decided to escape. Soon they worked out a plan as good as any they had ever made. Even the smallest points were considered carefully. They planned as a team because they lived in the same room, and because the guards, who had a great deal of respect for the famous robbers, left them very much alone. They decided the quickest and safest way to escape was to squeeze themselves along a drain(下水道) from their present workplace in the prison to a quiet country road on the other side of the prison wall.

The great day arrived, and the pair started along the drain. With great difficulty, they squeezed themselves along for what seemed ages. In half an hour, they could see daylight. When they got out, the two men were so pleased with themselves at their success that they sloped each other on the back. It was only then that they realized they were not alone. They looked around, and found themselves facing thirty astonished policemen, who were carrying musical instruments of various sorts. The next morning the same judge seemed very sorry as he told Snoopy and Lou that the map of the prison drain system, which they had studied so carefully, was more than twenty years old, and that the quiet country road was no longer there. The drain now led directly to the parade ground, where the police band had just finished practicing when the two robbers appeared before them.

73. What was Snoopy and Lou’s plan to escape from the prison?

A. They planned to run away while working in the prison workplace.

B. They planned to climb over the prison wall, on the other side of which was a quiet country road.

C. They planned to crawl along the drain which led to a country road.

D. They planned to get to the parade ground through the drain which was empty when the police band was not practicing.

74. Snoopy and Lou failed in their plan to escape because ________.

A. they did not plan well beforehand

B. they were not quick enough in their action

C. the policemen had been keeping a watchful eye on them

D. the map of the prison drain system they used was out of date

75 According to the article, which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. When Snoopy and Lou got out of the drain, thirty policemen were waiting for them.

B. When Snoopy and Lou found themselves facing thirty policemen, they turned round and ran in the direction of the country road.

C. The policemen caught Snoopy and Lou by chance.

D. The policemen were frightened more than surprised when the two robbers suddenly

 appeared before them.

76. It seemed that the judge ______.

A. admired Snoopy and Lou for their cleverness

B. felt very proud to try(审判) the two famous robbers for their crime

C. was very angry at Snoopy and Lou’s breaking the law time and again

D. was unwilling to send the two famous robbers to prison.

He was just 12 years old when he died, but he brought courage and hope to people around the world.

Nkosi Johnson, who died last June, is remembered today as an AIDS fighter. This young boy challenged his government’s AIDS policies and united millions of South Africans in the fight against the disease.

Johnson was the longest surviving person born HIV-positive. He survived with this deadly disease for 12 years before it claimed his life.

At first, Johnson was expected to live for nine months when his foster mother(养母),Gail Johnson, took him in at the age of two. She now runs Nkosi’s Haven across the town from her house in Melville. The Haven is home to 20 children living with HIV or AIDS, and 11 of their mothers.

Johnson attracted the world’s attention and stole the hearts of thousands of people across the world at the 13th International AIDS Conference in Durban in July 2000.He stood in front of a large audience including South African President Thabo  Mbeki .He told them that he wanted AZT,a drug used to treat AIDS patients, to be given to HIV-positive pregnant(怀孕的) women to prevent the disease being passed on to their unborn babies .He received a loud cheer at the end of his speech.

“We are ordinary human beings; we can walk and talk. You can’t get AIDS by embracing, kissing and holding hands,” Johnson told the audience. His message criticized Africa, which has the world’s greatest proportion of people with AIDS and HIV. He made a special reference to South Africa, where  the greatest number of HIV-positive people about 4.2 million, or a 10th of the population—can be found.

Johnson’s speech was broadcast live across the world. Mbeki and his government were seriously criticized for their policy of holding back drugs for HIV-positive pregnant women. However ,the government later changed its view and promised that pregnant women with HIV would be treated.

With views beyond his age and even a sense of humor, Johnson soon became an international sign of the fight against AIDS and HIV. Former South African president Nelson Mandela said Johnson had inspired and touched the hearts of millions of people, Mendala  praised him as an “icon of the struggle for life.”

77. Johnson is remembered today as an AIDS fighter because______.

Should doctors ever lie to speed recovery? What should doctors say, for example, to a 46-year-old man coming for a physical examination just before going on vacation with his family who, thought he feels in good health, is found to have a form of cancer that will cause him to die within six months? If he asks, should the doctor say he isn’t ill or say he is only slightly ill without a danger of death?

Most doctors believe that the seriously ill do not want to know the truth about their conditions and that they lie for the patients’ own good. They follow the belief: “We do no harm to the patients as far as possible by telling lies.”

However, studies show most patients do want to be told truth, though very seriously ill. We are also learning that the truthful information helps patients fight against illness, even recover faster. If they get the untruthful information about their condition, they may even make a wrong decision that they don’t need treatment at all.

The patients and their relatives are more and more unsatisfied with the doctors’ lies. And the increasing doubts and the questions to doctors have appeared. Neither in medicine, nor in law, government or the social science can there be comfort in the old saying, “What you don’t know can’t hurt you.”

82. In the writer’s opinion, for doctors it’s right to ________.

A. let out to everyone the truth about the patients

B. tell the sick the truth to help them recover quickly

C. comfort the patients by telling lies

D. tell lies only for the patients’ own good

83. Most doctors believe that ________.

A. they lie for no reason

B. everyone doesn’t want to know the truth

C. their lies do good to the patients

D. the seriously ill needn’t to be told the truth

84. From the last paragraph, we know ________.

A. we should “Call a spade a spade” (锹)

B. “What you don’t know can’t hurt you”

C. “Practice makes perfect”

D. “Where there is a will, there is a way”

85. Facing a dying patient over 80, if you are a doctor, after examining him, what should you say to him?

A. “You are slightly ill. Take it easy.”

B. “You are dying. Go back home.”

C. “No problem at all. Have a rest.”

D. You are seriously ill. We will try our best.”

Possible version

“Animal World” is my favorite  program ,which is hosted by Zhao  Zhong xiang.

First, I like animals very much, and the program about animals is so lively and interesting that it attracts me deeply. Next, from the program I have learned a lot about animals and their lives in nature, which is unknown to me before .I have come to understand the close relationship between men and animals. That is, we good friends and we should live together in peace. Finally ,I have got to know the importance of protecting nature, if we want to live well ,we mustn’t kill the animals and must keep the balance of nature. If the animals die out ,so will we human beings.

That’s all .Than you .
