For those of you who were born in the year of the pig, good luck and much success! This is your year. When talking to a Westerner, however, you've got to be a little careful when you talk about pigs. Chinese people view the pig as a smart and prosperous animal. Western ideas tend to be a little more negative. A pig in the West is seen as a dirty, lazy, and fat animal. If anyone ever called you a pig, you wouldn't be smiling. When a person doesn't like someone, sometimes he will call that person a pig. If you ever meet a Westerner who was born in the year of the pig, don't say, “Oh, you're a pig!” Most Westerners will understand. They will be sure that you made some kind of mistake. However, don't take any chances. You might just offend(触怒)someone who does not share your positive ideas about pigs.

Last August, Joe and Mary Mahoney began looking at colleges for their 17-year-old daughter, Maureen. With a checklist of criteria in hand, the Dallas family looked around the country visiting half a dozen schools. They sought a university that offered the teenager’s intended major, one located near a large city, and a campus where their daughter would be safe.

“The safety issue is a big one,” says Joe Mahoney, who quickly discovered he wasn’t alone in his worries. On campus tours other parents voiced similar concerns, and the same question was always asked: what about crime? But when college officials always gave the same answer — “That’s not a problem here.” — Mahoney began to feel uneasy.

“No crime whatsoever?” comments Mahoney today.  “I just don’t buy it.”  Nor should he: in 1999 the U.S. Department of Education had reports of nearly 400,000 serious crimes on or around our campuses. “Parents need to understand that times have changed since they went to colleges,” says David Nichols, author of Creating a Safe Campus. “Campus crime mirrors the rest of the nation.”

But getting accurate information isn’t easy. Colleges must report crime statistics (统计数字) by law, but some hold back for fear of bad publicity, leaving the honest ones looking dangerous. “The truth may not always be obvious,” warns S. Daniel Carter of Security on Campus, Inc., the nation’s leading campus safety watchdog group.

To help concerned parents, Carter promised to visit campuses and talk to experts around the country to find out major crime issues and effective solutions.

56. The Mahoneys visited quite a few colleges last August ______.

A. that are protected by campus security

B. that report campus crimes by law

C. that are free from campus crime

D. the enjoy very good publicity

60. What is the text mainly about?

B. Crimes on or around campuses.

D. concerns about kids’ campus safety.

( C )

I'm usually fairly doubtful about any research that concludes that people are either happier or unhappier or more or less certain of themselves than they were 50 years ago. While any of these statements might be true, they are practically impossible to prove scientifically. Still, I was struck by a report which concluded that today's children are significantly more anxious than children in the 1950s. In fact, the analysis showed, normal children aged 9 to 17 exhibit a higher level of anxiety today than children who were treated for mental illness 50 years ago.

Why are America's kids so stressed? According to the report there are two main causes: increasing loneliness ─ brought on by high divorce rates and little communication with society, among other things ─ and a growing perception that the world is a more dangerous place.

Given that we can't turn the clock back, adults can still do plenty to help the next generation handle such difficulties. At the top of the list is giving children a better appreciation of the limits of individualism (个人主义). No child is an island. Strengthening social ties helps protect individuals against stress. To help kids build stronger connections with others, you can pull the plug on TVs and computers. Your family will thank you later. They will have more time for face-to-face relationships, and they will get more sleep.

Limit the amount of virtual (虚拟的) violence your children are exposed to. It's not just video games and movies; children see a lot of murder and crime on the local news. Keep your expectations for your children reasonable. Many highly successful people never attended Harvard or Yale. Make exercise part of your daily routine. It will help you deal with your own anxieties and provide a good model for your kids. Sometimes anxiety is unavoidable. But it doesn't have to ruin your life.

61. The author thinks that the conclusions of any research comparing people's state of

mind today with people’s state of mind in the past are______.
  A. surprising B. confusing C. interesting D. questionable

62. What does the author mean when he says, “we can't turn the clock back”?
  A. It's impossible to slow down the pace of change.
  B. The social reality children are facing cannot be changed.
  C. Lessons learned from the past should not be forgotten.
  D. It's impossible to forget the past.
63. According to the analysis, compared with normal children today, children treated

as mentally ill 50 years ago____.

A. had little communication with friends

B. were probably less self-centered

C. probably suffered less from anxiety

D. were considered less individualistic
64. The first and most important thing parents should do to help their children is ____.

A. to provide the children with a safer environment

B. to lower their expectations for the children

C. to get the children more active socially

D. to set an example for the children to follow
65. What conclusion can be drawn from the passage?
 A. Anxiety, though unavoidable, can be dealt with.

B. Children's anxiety has been taken too seriously.
 C. Children's anxiety can disappear with more parental care.

D. Anxiety, if properly controlled, may help children become mature.

阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

“Don’t spit, litter or shout loudly. Don’t yell into your mobile phone.” These are not just rules for kids. They are the basic “Dos and don’ts” in a guidebook the Chinese Government will give citizens traveling abroad and at home next year. This guidebook aims to improve China’s image in foreigners’ eyes. As more and more Chinese go on overseas trips, reports about their bad manner flood in. Many overseas Chinese are embarrassed when foreigners ask them if all Chinese talk loudly and spit everywhere. The poor behavior of some Chinese has done great harm to our reputation for having good manners. China has become an important corner of the global village. We have to understand and respect others’ cultures. So before you go on your next overseas trip, remember to learn about the culture and people there. You will have a better experience and win respect for yourself as well as your country.

【写作内容】

1、概括短文的内容要点,该部分的词数大约为30;

2、就“Good Manners Matter”这一主题发表你的看法,至少包括以下的内容要点,该部分词数大约为120;

2) 说出你有怎样的解决办法。

【写作要求】

基础写作:

I am quite satisfied with the travel agency. First of all, the local tour guide John was very enthusiastic and considerate to all tourists, especially to the older people. The local tour guide explained everything about the places we visited in a clear and lively way, which helped us broaden our horizons. However, the food provided in the restaurant didn’t agree with many of us and quite a few of us had to buy extra food. In addition, we wanted to be taken to the shops where we could buy good bargains but were not.

任务型写作:

The author argues that Chinese overseas visitors should pay more attention to their bad manners because good manners are of great importance as for the healthy and positive image of China.

As far as I am concerned, it is important to put emphasis on this issue because, as mentioned above, it does great harm to our Chinese people’s reputation. We know that it is easier to fall into bad manners than to get into good ones and indeed there are some Chinese people who do have some bad manners, but I firmly believe that we can do something about it. No matter where we are, home or abroad, we can have good manners. Be gentle with the car and shop doors, try to say more” Hello” and “Thank you”, and smile to people, even though you don’t know them. All these details in life will help us drop the bad manners and become more respectable and welcome in foreign countries.

W: What can I do for you, sir?

M: I bought a blue shirt here last week. But..

W: What’s the matter?

M: The color has run.
W: Let me see. Did you wash it with hot water?
M: I’m not that foolish.
W: Do you have the receipt with you?
M: Yes, here it is.

W: Do you want to change it for another one or give it back?
M: I want to give it back.

W: Then you have to wait until our manager comes back next Monday.
M: Then I’ll change it for another one, for I’m very busy.
W: OK.

Text2

W: Hello. Is that Mr. Brown speaking?

M: Yes. What’s the matter, Alice?

W: I have to ask for a two-day leave, so I’m afraid that I can’t finish off the report tomorrow.
M: Why? What’s the matter with you?

W: Jimmy, my husband, is ill and the doctor says he needs an operation at once, so I have to stay in the hospital to look after him.

M: Oh, I’m very sorry to hear that. I hope his illness is not too serious and he will recover soon.

W: Thank you. But the work…

M: Don’t worry. Alice. Look after Jimmy carefully, and I will ask someone else to finish it.
W: Thank you.
M: If help is needed, call me, please.
W: Thanks a lot.

Text3

W: Why do English people often start their talk about weather?

M: Well, there are two reasons, I think. One is that, of course, the weather in England is always changing and we never know what to expect.
W: What’s the second reason, then?
M: The second reason may be that the weather’s a subject quite safe to talk about. It won’t hurt anybody.

W: It’s an easy way of reaching an agreement, too.

M: Yes, I begin “A cold morning, isn’t it?” and the other man will say, “Yes, we’re having a very cold spring.”

W: So far you’ve agreed about everything.
M: Yes. In this way, we’re beginning to feel friendly.

Text5

It is difficult to regulate every part of the Internet. This is particularly because thousands of people donate information to the Internet every day. However, there are many ways to effectively regulate certain parts of the Internet so that people will be less able to enter unpleasant material.

All in all, there will always be material on the Internet unsuitable for people, and it would be a lifelong process to monitor and catch every bit of unpleasant material entering the Internet. People should be taught how to use the Internet appropriately and constructively. When used correctly, the Internet can be a powerful source of good information. The Internet makes information accessible to people. The new Internet regulation would bring a better Internet that truly everyone will be able to use without the worry of social conflicts arising.
