Accidents happen almost daily. Some accidents are minor and some are serious but others may be fatal. We read about such accidents nearly every day in the newspapers. It is wrong for people to think that accidents occur only on the roads or highways, or even at worksites. Home accidents are just as common. Because very few home accidents are reported, people tend to think that there are few accidents that happen in homes.
There have been many cases where people fall to their deaths from high-rise flats. Children often fall from staircases while coming down the stairs. Old people may slip on wet or slippery floors if they are not careful.
Nowadays there are a lot of modern electrical appliances such as rice-cookers, electric irons, and kettles which make life easy for the modern housewives. These appliances can kill if they are not used in the proper way.
Gas stoves used for cooking are also dangerous if they are not properly handled. They may cause burns or, in more serious cases, they may even cause fires.
But all such accidents can be prevented if we are careful and obey simple rules of safety. For example, it is unwise for people to try repairing their own electrical appliances if they do not know how. It is safer for them to get their faulty appliances repaired by a qualified electrician.
41.People think accidents happen only on the roads or highways because .
A. there are more road accidents
B. many home accidents are not reported in news- papers

A. People may fall to deaths from high buildings.

43.Which of the following is true about the modern electrical appliances?
A. They help modern housewives a lot.
B. They are very dangerous and should not be used too much.
C. They are usually safe unless they are used carefully.
D. They are not dangerous even if they are used carelessly.
44.People are advised .
A. to avoid using electrical appliances
B. to repair their own faulty electrical appliances
C. not to repair their own faulty electrical appliances
D. not to throw away their faulty electrical appliances

Remember your first romantic disappointment? Remember the pain and unhappiness of breaking-up ----- uncertainty? Winne recalls feeling very sad after her first true love deserted her. My mum came into my room carrying a beautiful nightgown and handed it to me, gave me a hug and said, “I know you are feeling very heartbroken. I thought you could use something to make you feel beautiful right now.” The nightgown didn’t make Winne’s hurt go away, but she knew that her mother understood and cared about her feelings.
As a parent, much as you want to make it all better for your teen, give them space. Tell him or her that breakups are hard and you are there for him whenever he wants to speak to you. Then let go.
Teenage girls often deal with break-ups by talking on the phone with their friends or diving into the Internet for a long chat. They review all the hurts and pains which are being cured. Boys react to broken relationships differently. Boys often become angry since that, unfortunately, is the only emotional choice that society accepts for boys. Some boys hide their pain. Respect your teen, when a relationship breaks up. It takes time to get over it, and the only way to get through that is to get through it.
Sometimes teenagers get into trouble while trying to feel accepted again or win back a loved one. Keep reaching out to troubled teenagers. At first, teens will refuse a parent’s attempts to help. Don’t be afraid to insist.
Teen break-ups can cause heart-wrenching pain, but sooner or later teenagers should be ready to date again. How can you make your child toward a healthy relationship? Teens are likely to meet others like themselves through activities. The secret to attracting good boys or girls is to become your own independent person who feels good about who she is and what she’s about.

Have you ever been in a meeting while someone was making a speech and realized suddenly that your mind was a million miles away? You probably felt sorry and made up your mind to pay attention and never have daydreaming again. Most of us from earlier school days have been told that daydreaming is a waste of time.
“ On the contrary,” says L.Giambra, an expert in psychology(心理学), “ daydreaming is quite necessary. Without it, the mind couldn’t get done all the thinking it has to do during a normal day
You can’t possibly do all your thinking with a conscious mind. Instead, your unconscious mind is working out problems all the time. Daydreaming then may be one way that the unconscious states of minds have silent dialogues.”
Early experts in psychology paid no attention to the importance of daydreams or even considered them harmful. At one time daydreaming was thought to be a cause of some mental illness. They did not have a better understanding of daydreams until the late 1980s. Eric Klinger, a professor of psychology, is the writer of the book Daydreaming. Klinger says, “we know now that daydreaming is one of the main ways that we organize our lives, learn from our experiences, and plan for our futures. Daydreams really are a window on the things we fear and the things we long for in life.”
Daydreams are usually very simple and direct, quite unlike sleep dreams which may be hard to understand. It’s easier to gain a deep understanding of your life by paying close attention to your daydreams than by trying to examine your sleep dreams carefully. Daydreams help you recognize the difficult situations in your life and find out a possible way of handling them.
Daydreams cannot be predicted; they move off in unexpected directions which may be creative and full of useful ideas. For many famous artists and scientists, daydreams were and are a main source of creative energy.
So the next time you catch yourself daydreaming, don’t stop. Just pay attention to your dream. It may be more important than you think.
52.In what way are daydreams different from sleep dreams?
A. Daydreams help to develop an unconscious mind.
B. Daydreams are not so easy for us to control and direct.
C. Daydreams help us to handle more difficult situations
D. Daydreams are easier for us to understand.
53.Professor Eric Klinger believes that _______.
A. our fears and longings in life are shown in our daydreams
B. we may study our experiences just through our daydreams
C. daydreaming is one of the important ways that we recognize our lives
D. we should be able to tell our futures by having daydreams
54.The writer of the article thinks that ______-.
A. daydreaming is more helpful than sleep dreams
B. many artists and scientists are famous because they have daydreams
C. professor Eric Klinger has a better idea than L. Giambra
D. daydreaming with an unconscious mind will do good to health
55.Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A. Daydreaming was once regarded as a cause of mental illness.
B. Experts began to have a better understanding of daydreams in the late 1980s.
C. Scientists believe that we can know daydreams before having them.
D. Many well-known artists gained energy of creation from daydreams.

When I come across a good essay in reading newspapers, I often feel like cutting and keeping it. But just as I am about to do so I find the article on the opposite side is as much interesting. It may be a discussion of the way to keep in good health, or advice about how to be oneself in society. If I cut the front essay, the opposite one is bound to suffer damage, leaving out half of it or keeping the text without the subject. As a result, the scissors would stay before they start, or halfway done when I find out the result that inevitably causes my regret.
Sometimes two things are to be done at the same time, both deserving (worthy) your attention. You can only take up one of them, the other has to wait or be given up. But you know the future is unpredictable---the changed situation may not allow you to do what is left behind. Thus you are caught in a fix and feel sad. How come that nice opportunities and brilliant ideas should gather around all at once? It may happen that your life changes dramatically on your preference of one alternative (choice) to the other.
In fact that is what life is like: we are often faced with the two opposite sides of a thing which are both desirable like newspaper cutting. It often occurs that our attention is drawn to one thing only after we take up another. The former may be more important than the latter and give rise to a divided mind. I still remember a philosopher’s (哲学家) remarks: “ When one door shuts, another opens in life. ” So a passive choice may not be a bad one.
Whatever we do in our lifetime, wherever life’s storm makes us go, there must be something we can achieve, some shore we can land on. Don’t forget God always keeps an alternative door open for every one. While the front door is closed, there must be another open for you.
56.The main idea of the passage is______.
A. where there is a will, there is a way B. cutting newspapers gives us a lesson
C. all roads lead to Rome D. an equal chance is provided for everyone.
57.After reading the passage, we may know the writer is a person of______.
A. observation B. curiosity C. encouragement D. consideration
58.The word “fix” in “you are caught in a fix” in paragraph 2 refers to______.
A. difficult situation B. your preference of one choice
C. what is left behind D. two things are to be done at the same time
59.The underlined part in the passage tells us ______.
A. life is like cutting newspapers B. we can’t kill two birds with one stone
C. life sometimes changes completely D. it is often difficult to make a choice in our life
60.Which of the statements below is true to the passage?
A. Cutting newspapers is a hard job.
B. When you are caught in a fix, you have met two good things.
C. There must be a way that is better than the other.
D. You should maintain a positive attitude towards your choice.

作文
Living in a city has both advantages and disadvantages. It is often easier to find work. There are always many choices of public transport. Besides, there are a lot of interesting things to do and places to see. You can eat in good restaurants, visit museums, go to cinemas and go to parks whenever you want to relax. However, living in a city is often very expensive. You must find a well-paid job, otherwise, you will not be able to afford the things you will do. What's more, the city is always crowded, noisy and dirty. It is very difficult to find a good place where people can enjoy peace and fresh air as in the countryside.
