New York originally belonged to the Indians. Yet today there are very few Indians among New York’s millions of people. How did this change come about? When the first white settlers arrived in the newly-discovered continent along its east coast, the Indians welcomed them and gave them food and shelter. Then, as the newcomers settled down, the Indians helped them till(耕作) the ground and taught them how to hunt and fish, for this was a land of wildness, and the white were suited to such surroundings.

More white men came. They needed more land, so through force, they took the land away from the Indians. How the early Dutch settlers got the island of Manhattan is a well-known story. By giving the Indians some toys and cheap goods worth about 24 US dollars, they bought Manhattan which is now the center and busiest section of New York.

All along the coast the story was more or less the same. The Indians found themselves pushed off the land. They didn’t like this, so they fought back. There were fierce battles, and people on both sides were killed. But the white people kept coming in. They also had guns, but the Indians had only spears, bows and arrows. The Indians were defeated and pushed further back.

书面表达(25分)

Dear editor,

I’m writing to tell you about the arguments on whether students of Senior Three should go in for sports or not.

More than half of the students think we should exercise every day because health is the most important. You can do nothing without it. Sports and exercise can make us strong and energetic.

On the other hand, 45% of us believe it a waste of time to take exercise. Also, it’s very tiring. After having sports, we are too excited to get down to our study. We may even get hurt in sports.

And I think it’s true that we should devote ourselves to the lessons, but sports make our brains relaxed and enable us to have a sound sleep every night. The efficiency of revision will surely be improved.

Best wishes.

Yours,

Li Hua
