Learn another language isn't easy, but most people can learn a second language well if they're willing to put in the necessary time. Here are sane practical suggestions for studying effectively, overcoming anxiety, and learning the grammar and skills necessary for success in foreign language classes.

  Study every day

Language lemming is cumulative: you cannot put it off until the weekend. Study one or two hours for every class hour if you want a good mark.

Distribute (分配) your study time in 15 to 30 minutes period throughout the day

Study a different task each time: vocabulary now, grammar next, etc. Get an overview during the first half hour: spend 10 minutes reviewing dialog, 10 minutes learning new vocabulary, 10 minutes learning new grammar… So you'll at least have looked at it all. About 80% of your study time should be spend on recitation (背诵) or practice.

Attend and participate (参与) in every class — even if you aren't well prepared

Class time is your best opportunity to practice, Learn the grammar and vocabulary outside of class in order to make full use of the class time. Spend a few minutes "warming up" before each class by speaking or reading the language.

Make yourself comfortable in the classroom

Get to know your classmates, so you'll feel you're among friends. Visit your teacher during office hours to get acquainted (熟悉的) : explain your goals and fears about the course to your teacher.

Learn grammar if you don't already know it

Grammar is the skeleton (骨架) and the basic structure of a language, and you must learn it.

Practice for tests by doing what you'll have to do on the test

If the test will require you to write, then study by writing — including spelling and accents. If you' re asked to listen, practice listening. Ask for practice questions and make up your own test questions. Try to invent changes on patterns and forms. Over learning is also required in tests preparation: study beyond the paints of recognition to mastery.

  Develop a good attitude

Have a clear personal reason for taking the class. Set personal goals for what you want to learn. Leave perfectionism at the door; give yourself permission to make mistakes and learn from them.

56. What does the underlined word "cumulative" in "Paragraph 3" probably mean?

A graded reader is a book containing simplified languages used to help learners master the language. Readers come in different levels, from beginners to advanced. English learners need to choose a reader that is suitable for their level.

Why use readers? Lots of research shows that extensive (广泛的) reading improves all aspects of language learning, including vocabulary, speaking skills, fluency (流利), writing skills and reading comprehension.

Reading is a way of learning English without classes or a teacher. It helps develop learner independence. And while reading graded readers, learners don't have to run to a dictionary because the language is at their level.

How do I get started? The entire class can read the same book or different books at different times.

How do I know the fight level? If your class is all reading the same book, choose one that is appropriate for their level. If your students are reading different books, you can have a selection of books at different levels. In this case, don't worry too much about the level. A learner who is interested in detective stories might read a higher level book ff the motivation (动机) is there.

How to read the book depends on students' age, motivation and class time available. Some classes like to read silently, others like to read aloud in small groups and some enjoy being read to by the teacher. Be sensitive to the class and ask for their opinions.

Some pre-reading activities are needed. Before students open a book, it is important to spark interest in the story and in the whole process of reading. For example, ask them to guess what the story is from cover, chapter titles and let students put them in the best order, or discuss the author.

During reading, choose a suitable chapter or chapters that can be broken down to make a comic strip (连环漫画). Or students select a part of the book to make into a radio play. Students can also become journalists and report on parts of the story. Choose a piece of action and have students write it up. Besides, students can role-play an interview with a character.

59. The underlined word "appropriate" in the fifth paragraph probably means "________".

 A. famous B. suitable C. ordinary D. enjoyable

60. Who do you think the passage is written mainly for?

 A. Students. B. Parents. C. Teachers. D. Pupils.

61. When do you think students can become journalists and report on parts of the story?

 A. Before reading. B. During reading. C. During warming up. D. Before a test.

62. From the passage, we can infer that _______.

 A. readers can make classroom fun

 B. reading can help develop learners dependence

 C. some pre-reading activities are not needed

 D. extensive reading improves all aspects of language learning

C

Brazil has become one of the developing world's great successes at reducing population growth — but mere by accident than design. While countries such as India have made joint

efforts to reduce birth rates, Brazil has had better result without really trying, says George Martine at Harvard.

Brazil's population growth rate has dropped from 2.99% a year between 1951 and 1960 to 1.93% a year between 1981 and 1990, and Brazilian women now have only 2.7 children en average. Martine says this figure may have fallen stir further since 1990, an achievement that makes it the envy of many other Third World countries.

Martine puts it down to, among other things, soap operas and installment (分期付款) plans introduced in the 1970s. Both played an important, although indirect, role in lowering the birth rate. Brazil is one of the world's biggest producers of soap operas. Globo, Brazil's most popular television network, shows three hours of soaps six nights a week, while three others show at least one hour a night. Most soaps me based on wealthy characters living the high life in big cities.

"Although they have never really tried to work in a message towards the problems of reproduction (生育), they describe middle and upper class values — not many children, different attitudes towards sex, women working, says Martine. "They sent this image to all parts of Brazil and made people conscious of other patterns of behaviour and other values, which were put into a very attractive package."

Meanwhile, the installment plans tried to encourage the poor to become consumers (消费者) ."This led to an enormous change in consumption patterns and consumption was incompatible (不能共存的) with unlimited reproduction," says Martine.

63. According to the passage, Brazil has cut back its population growth ________.

 A. by educating its citizens B. by careful family planning

 C. by developing TV programmes D. by chance

64. According to the passage, many Third World countries _____.

 A. haven't paid enough attention to birth control

B. would soon join Brazil in controlling their birth rate

 C. have great difficulty controlling their population

D. make no use of TV plays in family planning

65. Soap operas have helped in lowering Brazil's birth rate because _________.

 A. they keep people sitting long hours watching TV

B. they have gradually changed people's way of life

C. people are drawn to their attractive package

D. they popularize government's birth control measures

66. What is Martine's conclusion about Brazil's population growth?

 A. The increase in birth rate will raise consumption.

 B. The desire for consumption helps to reduce birth rate.

 C. Consumption patterns and reproduction patterns are incompatible.

 D. A country's production is limited by its population growth.

D

Over time, the Declaration of Independence has deeply affected American history. Phrases from the document such as "all men are created equal" quickly took on a life of their own or were applied to groups that the authors never expected. Blacks quickly used this language to challenge slavery in the United Sates. The ideal of equality led Northern sates to free slaves in the 1780s, 179Os,and early 1800s. Black and white abolitionists (废奴主义者) used the ideal that all men were created equal to attack slavery in the South before the Civil War. And civil fights supporters gathered behind Jefferson's words in their fight against racism in the 1950s and 1960s. In 1848 the delegates (代表) to the Seneca Falls women's fights conference proclaimed that "all men and women are created equal", and the 20th-century feminist (女权主义者) did the same.

Other groups have focused on the document's defence of the right to rebel against an unjust government. The Declaration of Independence had a deep effect on the French Revolution; its influence was strong in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, adopted by the National Assembly of France in 1789.In the 19th century the principles of the declaration were adopted by various Latin American movements fighting for independence from European colonial powers. The declaration influences more recent struggles for national identity (身份): Vietnamese Communist leader HoChi Mink, for example, used the American document as one of the basic principles behind his fight to establish an independent and unified Vietnam.

The document itself continues to be an important symbol for the American people. Today, each page of the Declaration of Independence is protected. Over one million Americans view the document each year in Washington, D. C., where it is displayed along with the Constitution of the United States and the Bill of Rights.

67. What can be inferred about the 20th-century feminists?

 A. They fought against racism, using the Declaration of independence.

 B. They defended women's rights by referring to "men and women".

 C. They held conferences to discuss the Declaration of Independence.

 D. They proclaimed the Independence of Women' s Rights.

68. The passage gives the example of the French Revolution to show that

 A. the Declaration of Independence ensures people's rights to supervise (监督) the government

 B. the Declaration of Independence ensures the equality for all men

 C. French people and the U.S. are closely minted

 D. the French Revolution had a strong influence on many Latin American Movements

69. From the last paragraph, we can see that today the Declaration of Independence

 A. has had many of its pages lest B. is only available in Washington D.C.

 C. is still supported by the American people   D. has had many changes

70. What is the main idea of the passage?

 A. The Declaration of Independence and the French Revolution.

 B. The Declaration of Independence' s influence on other countries.

 C. The application of the Declaration of Independence by different people.

 D. The different purposes of the Declaration of Independence intended by its authors.

Healthy knees aren't the main consideration in choosing high heels, but new research says chunky heels are just as bad for the knees as spindly stilettos (细高跟鞋). "It takes a long time to feel the effects of knee osteoarthritis (骨关节炎) — and once you do, it is too ]ate," said Dr. Casey Kerrigan, leading researcher of the study and associate professor at Harvard Medical School's department of physical medicine. "I compare it to smoking — one cigarette is not painful, but over a lifetime it is. Wide-heeled shoes feel comfortable, so women wear them all day long, "Kerrigan said. "They are better for your feet than stiletto heels, but just as had for your knees."

In the study, researchers had twenty women wear two pairs of shoes with three-inch heels, one with a narrow heel and the other with a thick one. The scientists compared how much pressure was put on the women's knees by both types of shoes. The women also walked barefoot to test normal pressure. The scientists found that both types of shoes applied equal amounts of pressure to the knees. Compared with walking barefoot, the heels increased pressure on the inside of the knee by 26 percent. Increased pressure on the knee eventually leads to arthritis, experts say.

The idea that high heels are bad for your health isn't new — scientists have warned women for years that they contribute to problems ranging from corns to hammer toes, tendonitis, knee pain, sprained (扭伤) ankles and back problems. But in 1998,Kerdgan and a team of Harvard researchers were the first to link high heels and knee osteoarthritis, a painful joint disease that destroys cartilage (软骨) surrounding the knee. The first study looked only at stiletto heels, and Kerrigan said she wanted to study the chunky high-heeled shoes she noticed many women wearing. "This study confirms what we all intuitively (直觉地) know that high-heeled shoes of any kind are not good for our health," said Dr. Glenn Pfeifer, a San Francisco doctor and member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons who was not connected to the study.

71. We learn from the passage that women choose chunky heels because _______.

 A. they want to walk comfortably

 B. chunky heeled shoes are cheaper than stiletto heeled pairs

 C. chunky heels do less harm to knees

 D. chunky heels are not painful at ail

72. The study mentioned in the second paragraph found that _______.

 A. pressure on the foot is caused by high heels

 B. the pressure is abnormal while walking barefoot

C. arthritis is always caused by pressure on the knees

 D. both types of shoe have the same harm to the knees

73. It can be inferred from the passage that ________.

 A. people got to know the high heels are bad for health recently

 B. people have known the high heels are bad for health for years

 C. people haven' t known the high heels are bad for health yet

 D. people will be warned that the high heels are bad for health soon

74. Kerrigan's late study looked at the chunky high-heeled shoes because _______.

 A. they feel more comfortable B. they are related to knee osteoarthritis

 C. they are worn by many women D. they are different from stiletto heels

75. The best title for the passage may be ________.

 A. Taking Healthy Knees into Consideration B. High-heels Do Harm to Knees

 C. Chunky Heels and Stiletto Heels D. When Wearing High-heels

Dear editor,

I'm a student in Senior Three. We have made a survey — "Who do you turn to when in trouble?" Here are the results.

Most of the students will go to their classroom or friends when in trouble they're almost of the same age, so they can talk with and understand each other easily. Some students will tell their teachers or parents about their troupes and ask for their help as the teachers and parents have rich experience and love them very much. They can be trusted by these students. Only a few students solve their problems all by themselves. They hate to talk with others and can' t get on well with others. They have few friends.

In my opinion, when in trouble we' d better ask our teachers, parent, friends or classmates for help.

  Yours,

  Li Hua
