Nothing was going right for Dr. Turner at the hospital. He made a mistake while performing an operation on a patient. He felt sure he was no longer trusted and decided to change his job. A few days later, Dr. Turner went to Throby, and arrived at Dr. Johnson’s home early in the afternoon. Though old and a little deaf, Dr. Johnson still had a good brain. He kept talking to the visitor about the town and its people. When they turned to the question of partnership, it was already seven in the evening. Dr. Johnson invited Dr. Turner to have dinner with him in a restaurant before catching the train back to London. Dr. Turner noticed that Dr. Johnson was fond of good food and expensive wines. They had an excellent meal. When the bill was brought, Dr. Johnson felt in his pocket. “Oh, dear,” he said. “I’ve forgotten my money.” “That’s all right,” Dr. Turner said. “I’ll pay the bill.” As he did so, he began to wonder whether Dr. Johnson was worthy of trust.

Gary takes part in an unusual organization called Helping Hands:Simian Aides(猴子助手)for the disabled. The organization supplies the disabled with trained monkeys that reduce the disabled person's dependence on family, friends and hired servants.
Using his mouth, Gary controls a small laser(激光)pointer fixed on his wheel-chair. With it, he directs Jo to change books or the tape-recorder. She brings him drinks from a refrigerator and clears away empty containers.
When asked, Jo will fetch the remote control for the TV and place it on Gery's working table where he can operate it with his mouthstick. This mouthstick can be used for practically everything:turning the pages of a book, dialing the telephone, changing channels on TV, working at a typewriter or computer. If Gary's mouthstick drops to the floor, Jo will pick it up and gently put it again into his mouth.
"I can't imagine living without her ,"Gary says. He will always need human assistance for such things as getting in and out of bed, bathing or changing his clothes. When a rather dirty, poorly dressed person kneels at your feet and put out his hands to beg for a few coins, do you hurry on, not knowing what to do, or do you feel sad and hurriedly hand over some money? What should our attitude to beggars be? There can be no question that the world is full of terribly sad stories. It must be terrible to have no idea where our next meal is going to come from. It seems cruel not to give some money to beggars.
Certainly, most of the world’s great religions(宗教)order us to be open-hearted and share what we have with those less fortunate than ourselves. But has the world changed? Maybe what was morally(道德方面)right in the old days, when one knew exactly who in the village had suffered misfortune and needed help, is no longer the best idea. Quite a few people will not give to beggars. Let us look at their arguments.
First, some believe that many city beggars dress up on purpose to look pitiable and actually make a good living from begging. Giving to beggars only encourages this sort of evil(恶行). Secondly, there is the worry that the money you give will be spent on beer, wine or drugs. Thirdly, there is the opinion that there is no real excuse for begging. One might be poor, but that is no reason for losing one’s sense of pride and self-dependence.
Related to this is the opinion that the problem should be dealt with by the government rather than ordinary people. Some people think beggars should go to the local government department and receive help.
It is hard to come to any final conclusion; there are various cases and we must deal with them differently. A few coins can save a life in some situations, and even if the money is wasted, that does not take away the moral goodness of the giver.
59.What is mainly discussed in the passage?
A.Moral deeds of people
B.Religious activities of the church
C.Moral goodness of the giver
D.Arguments on giving to beggars
60.What can we infer from the sentence “But has the world changed?” in the second paragraph?
A.People no longer know who suffers misfortune in the village.
B.Some people will not do what was morally right in the past.
C.We don’t meet with those who need help any more.
D.Now it is the government’s duty to help the beggars.
61.In the last paragraph, the writer thinks that it is hard to come to any final conclusion, because ______.
A.the cases can be so different
B.there are so many beggars
C.there is so much money wasted
D.there are so many different arguments
D
Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriage and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants(被告).But in the executive (主管的) circle, beauty can become a liability.
While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.
Handsome male executives were considered having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.
Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.
All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that the attractive overnight successes.
Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman who is considered to be more feminine (女子气的) has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly" qualities required.
This is true even in politics. "When the only clue(线索) is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently", says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates(候选人). She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in order they would vote for them.
The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.
62.The word "liability" most probably means________.
A.disadvantage B.advantage C.misfortune D.trouble
63.In traditionally female jobs, attractiveness________.
A.makes women look more honest and capable
B.strengthens the feminine qualities required
C.makes women less capable
D.often enables women to succeed quickly
64.Bowman's experiment shows that when it comes to politics,attractiveness_______.
A.turns out to be a disadvantage to men
B.is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women
C.affects men and women alike
D.has as little effect on men as on women
65.The author writes this passage to________.
A.give advice to job-seekers who are attractive
B.discuss the disadvantages of being attractive
C.demand equal rights for women
D.states the importance of appearance

Possible version:
Dear friends,
May I have your attention, please? Now I’d like to make a speech here.
With the improvement of living standard, there are a lot of waste on campus. For example, the students leave the lights on in the daytime, water running after washing and leave a lot of food after eating on the table. Some of the students even ask their parents for more pocket money. So it is high time that we had to deal with the problem. The reasons are as follows:
In the first place, the bad habit of being wasteful will have a bad influence on their own character. Secondly, it adds financial burden to their parents. Last but not the least, it also exhausts the world’s very limited natural resources, water and electricity.
But how can we reduce the waste? In my opinion, it is everybody’s business to fight against waste. On one hand, I should start with myself to save everything now. On the other hand, I’d like to remind my friends here to take the lead in reducing the waste.
Therefore, I’m sure. With everyone doing his bit, we will change the present situation for the better.
That’s all. Thank you!
