Many years ago, there were lots of trees on
the earth, because summer went on all year round. A forest covered the earth
like a green carpet. What was the forest like? It is not difficult to find out
because parts of that ancient forest still stand. It is known as the rain
forest. There even in fine weather, water falls in drops through the leaves.

covers about a million square miles. All the trees are very tall. The young
trees are up to 60 feet high, but it is not easy for some to grow taller,
because very little sunlight gets to them.
The grown-up trees are about 60 to
100 feet high. Some are even taller. The tallest trees can be 200 or more feet
high. In the forest of tall trees, not only plant life is rich but also animal

Football is, I believe, the most popular game in England: one has only to go to the important matches to see this. Rich and poor, young and old, one can see them all there, shouting for one side or the other.
To a stranger, one of the most surprising things about football in England is the great knowledge of the game which even the smallest boy seems to have. He can tell you the names of the players in most of the important teams, and he has pictures of them and knows the results of large numbers of matches. He will tell you who he expects will win such a match, and his opinion is usually as good as that of men three or four times his age.

书面表达
Dear editor,
I’m writing to tell you about the arguments on whether students of Senior Three should go in for sports or not.
More than half of the students think we should exercise every day because health is the most important. You can do nothing without it. Sports and exercise can make us strong and energetic.
On the other hand, 45% of us believe it a waste of time to take exercise. Also, it’s very tiring. After having sports, we are too excited to get down to our study. We may even get hurt in sports.
And I think it’s true that we should devote ourselves to the lessons, but sports make our brains relaxed and enable us to have a sound sleep every night. The efficiency of revision will surely be improved.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua
