A large earthquake hit Hebei province in northern China on 10th January 1998. The earthquake was very powerful. It measured 6.2 on the Richter scale. Fifty people died in the earthquake, and thousands more were injured or made homeless. Over 100,000 houses were destroyed or damaged.

January is usually the coldest month of the year in Hebei. Temperatures often fall to minus 30°C and cold winds blow both day and night. Bad weather conditions made life difficult and dangerous, especially for people made homeless by the earthquake. The victims urgently needed warm clothes, food, shelter, first aid and medicine.

The Red Cross was one of the first groups to provide help to the victims of the earthquake. The Red Cross Society of China immediately sent medical teams and food and clothes to the disaster area. In Hong Kong, donations from the HKSAR Government and from Hong Kong residents totaled over RMB 54 million.

This money bought blankets, coats, jackets, tents, food and medicine for the Hebei survivors. Also, mainland soldiers quickly arrived in Hebei. In the weeks after the earthquake, they helped to build more than 10, 000 temporary homes.

When newspapers and radios report the damage caused by a hurricane(飓风)called Hazel, the girl whose name is Hazel is probably teased (逗乐) by their friends. To keep out of trouble, the Weather Bureau says, “Any resemblance between hurricane names and the names of particular girls is only accidental(巧合).”

Some women became angry because hurricanes are given their names, but many other women are proud to see their names make headlines. They don't even care that they are the names of destructive storms. Because more women seem to like it than dislike it, the Weather Bureau has decided to continue using girls' names for hurricanes.

In some ways a hurricane is like a person. After it is born, it grows and develops, then becomes old and dies. Each hurricane has a character(特征) of its own. Each follows its own way through the world, and people remember it long after it has gone. So it is natural to give hurricanes names, and to talk about them almost as if they were alive.
