Ben

When I left school five years ago, I said to myself, “That’s that! No more learning for me. Now I can enjoy myself in the evening.” But about a year ago my boss said, “We’re going to get a computer in the near future.” What did he mean? I simply didn’t know. Any way, I decided to go to evening classes. I’m quite an expert on computers now and, you know, I actually enjoy studying.

Eve

I haven’t much interest in studying. To be honest, I don’t like reading very much, except for magazines and that sort of things. Just light reading, that is, to pass the time. But I do enjoy TV. Not that I watch everything. In fact, I choose my programmes very carefully. I’m particularly interested in current affairs. In some ways I think I learn more this way than I did at school.

Ted

I’m a very active sort of person—I simply love doing things. That’s why I enjoy sports so much. I mean, actually playing. I hardly ever watch them a TV, but I do read quite a bit about them. I’m even interested in the history of sports. I don’t have much time for anything else, except that I like dancing a lot. Some people say I’m not very good at it, though.

Joan

I should say I have great interest in studying. I’d rather do this than anything else. Since I left school, I’ve taken courses in all sorts of things. I go to the city library once a week,, but I much prefer evening classes because it’s more fun that way. My latest “craze”—if you can call it that – is foreign languages. I’m learning two, not one!

The mother waited till nine and her uneasiness got the upper hand over her. She decided to go out to meet her daughter. Just at that moment the noise of a car pulling up drew her to the window and – there was her daughter, waving goodbye to a boy. Her heart missed a beat. Still sitting up?” “Yes, Oh, that… Who’s that boy?” The daughter was stunned (发愣) for a moment. “Ah. It’s my monitor. He gave a lift on his way home. Mum, I’m going to bed.” “All right. Go to sleep early.”

Next morning when the mother went to the daughter’s room to do some tidying, she found her diary left at her pillow. Chinese are very generous (慷慨的) when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extracourse activities where they will either learn a music instrument or ballet, or other classes which will give them a hard start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. so parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their sons or daughters.

However, what most parents fail to see is that the most early education they can give their children is usually very cheap.

Parents can see that their children’s skills vary, skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize, though, is that today’s children lack self—respect and self—confidence (自信).

The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple—choice tests and how study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.

Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.

Teaching a child to cook will improve many skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his work successfully. His result, a well—cooked dinner, will give him satisfaction and a lot of self—confidence.

Some old machines, such as a broken radio or TV set, that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not merely teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.

56. Parents in China, according to this passage, _________.

A. are too strict with their children

B.       are too rich to educate their children

C. have some problems in educating their children

D.      are too poor to educate their children

57. Generally speaking, children’s skills ________.

A. come from their parents

B. have nothing to do with their education

C. may be different

D. have something to do with their marks in the exams

58. The writer of this passage does not seem to be satisfied with _________.

A. the Chinese parents’ ideas of educating their children

B. the education system in china

C. Chinese children’s skills

D. Chinese children’s hobbies

59. Doing some cooking at home helps children_______.

A. learn how to serve their parents

B. learn how to become strong and fat

C. benefit from it and prepare themselves for the future

D. make their parents believe that they are clever

60. According to the last paragraph we can conclude that ________.

A. broken radios and television sets are useful

B. one’s curiosity may be useful for his later life

C. an engineer must fix many broken radios

D. a good student should spend much time repairing radios

参考范文:

Opinions are divided on the question. 60% of the students are against the idea of entrance fees. They believe a public park should be free of charge. People need a place where they can rest and enjoy themselves. Changing entrance fees will no doubt keep some people away. What is more, it will become necessary to build gates and walls, which will do harm to the appearance of a city.

On the other hand, 40% think that fees should be charged because you need money to pay gardeners and other workers need to buy plants and young trees. They suggest, however, fees should be charged now.
