A year ago, I paid no attention to English idioms, though my teacher emphasized(强调) the importance again and again. But soon, the importance of English idioms was showed in an amusing experience.
One day, I happened to meet an Englishman on the road, and soon we began to talk. As I was talking about how I was studying English, the foreigner seemed to be astonished gently shaking his head, shrugging his shoulders, saying, “You don’t say!” “You don’t say!” I was puzzled. I thought, perhaps this is not an appropriate topic(适当的话题). “Well, I had better change the topic.” So I said to him, “ Well, shall we talk about the Great Wall? By the way, have you ever been there?” “Certainly, everybody back home will laugh at me if I leave China without seeing it. It was magnificent.” He was deep in thought when I began to talk like a tourist guide. “The Great Wall is one of the wonders in the world. We are very proud of it. ” Soon I was interrupted again by his order “ You don’t say!” I couldn’t help asking, “ Why do you ask me not to talk about it?” “ Well, I didn’t request you to do so,” He answered, greatly surprised. I said, “ Didn’t you say you don’t say?” Hearing this, the Englishman laughed to tears. He began to explain, “You don’t say actually means really? It is an expression of surprise Perhaps you don’t pay attention to English idioms” Only then did I know I had made a fool of myself. Since then I have been more careful with idiomatic expressions.

Fire fighting is a serious matter. Knowing what to do during a fire can save people’s lives. It is important to know the ways you can use and show them to everyone else in the family, such as stairways and emergency exits, but not elevators.(电梯)
From the lower floors of buildings, to escape from windows is possible. Learn the best way to get out of a window with the least chance of serious injury.
The second floor window is usually not very high from the ground. An average(平均高度) person, hanging by the fingertips(手指尖) will have a drop of about 6 feet to the ground. It is about the height of an average man. Of course, it is safer to jump a short way down than to stay in a burning building.
Windows are also useful when you are waiting for help. Be sure to keep the door closed before opening the window. Otherwise, smoke and fire may be drawn into the room. Keep your head low at the window to be sure you get fresh air rather than smoke that may have leaked(泄,漏) into the room.
On the second or the third floor, the best windows for escape are those that open onto a roof. From the roof a person can drop to the ground more safely. Dropping onto cement (水泥地面) might end in injury. Bushes and trees can help you to have a soft landing.
56. Which of the following should not be used when trying to escape from a fire?
A. Windows B. Elevators C. Fire exits D. Stairways

B. smoke will enter the room through an open window
C. fresh air can’t reach the second floor window
D. to keep your head low will help you to escape a fire
60. If you are on the second or the third floor when a fire breaks out, you’d better_______.
A. drop directly onto the ground
B. first drop onto a roof then onto the cement
C. drop from a roof window then onto bushes or trees
D. drop onto the cement rather than bushes and trees
C
If we are asked exactly what we were doing a year ago, we might have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and written in it account(陈述) of what we did each day, we should be able to give an answer to the question.
It is the same in history. Many things have forgotten because we do not have any written account of them. Sometimes men did keep record of the important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by fire or in a war. Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example, we know a great deal about the people who lived in China 4000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had not learned to write.
Sometimes, of course, even if the people cannot write. they may know something of the past . They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and those have been sung and acted and told for many generation(代), for most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call “remembered history”. Some of it has now been written history, because words are much more easily. Changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.
61.Which of the following ideas is not talked in the passage above?
A. Remembered history is less reliable(可靠的) than written history.
B. Written records of the past play a most important part in our learning of the human history.
C. A written account of our daily activities(活动) helps us to answer some questions.
D. Where there are no written records, there is no history.
62.Remembered history refers to -----------.
A. history based on a person’s imagination(想象).
B. Stories of important happenings passed from mouth to mouth.
C. Songs and dances about the most important events(事件).
D. Both B and C.
63. Remembered history is regarded as valuable only when ------------.
A. it is written down B. there is no written account
C. it proves to be true D. people are interested in it
64. It can be inferred(推断) from the passage that we could have learned much more about our past than we do now if our ancestors(祖先) had --------------.
A. kept a written record of every past event
B .not burned their written records in wars
C. told exactly stories of the most important happenings
D. made more songs and dances
65.Which is true according to the passage?
A. People in the old days did not kept records at all.
B. We know every thing that happened in the past
C. We may know something of the past completely from songs and dances
D. If we had written down the events that happened, we might have known much about the old days.
