On the 100th anniversary of the Nobel Prize awards, two British and one American scientist have shared the Nobel Prize in medicine for discovering how cells divide, work that goes to the heart of understanding the growth of cancer.

Leland Hartwell, head of Seattle's Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, will share the US$943,000 prize money with Sir Paul Nurse and Timothy Hunt at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London.

Together, their work offered the first clear understanding of how cells grow, divide and multiply (增加), in a basic molecular (分子的) process of life common to all complex organisms (有机体).

Working independently, the three pioneers "opened up a new chapter in cancer research," Hunt said.

In a series of independent discoveries starting in 1970, the three cancer researchers showed that the same underlying mechanism (机制) controls cell division in all organisms from the simplest fungus (真菌) to the 100,000 billion bring cells that comprise a human being.

Their work opened a new window into what goes wrong when healthy cells suddenly grow out of control, as happens in cancer, and offers the possibility of correcting it.

After giving a talk at a high school, I was asked to pay a visit to a special student. An illness had kept the boy home, but he had expressed an interest in meeting me, and it would mean a great deal to him. I agreed.

During the nine-mile drive to his home, I found out something about Matthew. He had muscular dystrophy(肌肉萎缩症). When he was born, the doctor told his parents that he would not live to see five, and then they were told he would not make it to ten. Now he was thirteen. He wanted to meet me because I was a gold-medal power lifter, and I knew about overcoming obstacles (障碍) and going for my dreams.

I spent over an hour talking to Matthew. Never once did he complain or ask, “Why me?” He spoke about winning and succeeding and going for his dreams. Obviously, he knew what he was talking about. He didn’t mention that his classmates had made fun of him because he was different. He just talked about his hopes for the future, and how one day he wanted to lift weight with me.

When we finished talking, I went to my briefcase and pulled out the first gold medal I won and put it around his neck. I told him he was more of a winner and knew more about success and overcoming obstacles than I ever would. He looked at it for a moment, then took it off and handed it back to me. He said, “You are a champion. You earned that medal. Someday when I get to the Olympics and win my own medal, I will show it to you.”

Last summer I received a letter from Matthew’s parents telling me that Matthew had passed away. They wanted me to have a letter he had written to me a few days before:

Dear Rick,

My mom said I should send you a thank-you letter for the picture you sent me. I also want to let you know that the doctors tell me that I don’t have long to live anymore. But I still smile as much as I can.

I told you someday I was going to the Olympics and win a gold medal. But I know now I will never get to do that. But I know I’m a champion, and God knows that too. When I get to Heaven, God will give me my medal and when you get there, I will show it to you. Thank you for loving me.

    Your friend,

                                                   Mathew

“Wanted by the FBI.” To the murderer, or the bank robber, these are the most frightening words in the world. When the criminal (罪犯) hears them, he knows that six thousand trained persons are after him.

Why should he be so afraid? There are hundreds of cities and thousands of villages where he can hide. There are large forests and deserts where he can lose himself. Besides, he's usually rich with stolen money.

Money can make it easier to hide. With money, the criminal can pay a dishonest doctor to operate on his face and make him hard to recognize. Money can pay for a hideout in some far-off place. But the criminal knows what happened to public enemies such as John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Machine Gun Kelly. They had plenty of money and good hideouts. Yet one by one they were found by the men of the FBI.

They know every trick the criminal knows and many more. If he makes just one mistake, they'll get him. That's why the man who is hunted can't sleep. That's why he becomes nervous, why he jumps at every sound. When he makes a mistake, he'll no longer be “wanted by the FBI”. He'll have been caught.

The FBI began on May 10, 1924. Attorney General Harlan F. Stone chose J. Eegar Hoover, a young lawyer in the Department of Justice, to head the new agency (机构). “What we need is a wholly new kind of police force,” he said. “Criminals today are smart. They use stolen cars and even planes to make their gateways. They have learned to open any lock. The criminal would have discovered science. We can't beat them with old methods. We have to train officers to work scientifically.”

J. Edgar Hoover quietly went ahead with his plans. He picked his men carefully. They had to be between the ages of twenty-five and thirty-five. He wanted only men with good manners and good character. When working as his officers they would have to meet all kinds of people. Hoover wanted men who could handle a teacup as well as a gun. He chose men so carefully that he made the FBI the hardest service in the world to get into. The FBI cannot help in every police problem. It can look into only certain crimes against the government. Solving all other crimes is the duty of local police forces.

54. A man wanted by the FBI will find that money is ______.

    A. not at all useful B. very helpful for a while

    C. necessary for staying free D. important and useful

55. Before he worked with the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover was a ______.

    A. policeman B. lawyer C. teacher D. general

56. The FBI was begun in order to ______.

    A. reduce crimes B. bring younger men into police work

    C. fight crimes scientifically D. offer jobs

57. A man who can “handle a teacup as well as a gun” has both ______.

    A. courage and manners B. strength and kindness

    C. wisdom and energy D. ability and humor

Some English words are made up of the same part and have different beginnings and different endings, such as import, export, report and transport. All these words, you can see, have the same root “ port”, which comes from the Latin word, meaning “ to carry” or “ to move” from one place to another. And according to the bit at the beginning --- which we call the prefix ( 前缀 ) --- the meaning changes: “ import” means “ to carry in”, or “ to bring into a country”; “ export”, “ex” means “ out of”, so this word means “ to carry out of a country”; “ re” means “back”, so the word “report” means “to tell somebody, to bring back information to somebody”; “transport”, “trans” means “across” and it means “to carry across one place to another”.

Let’s look at the following words: supporter, reporter, importer and exporter. You can see that in this case these words are nouns which are made up of the verbs plus a suffix, thus meaning a person who completes the verb. So supporter means somebody who supports. A reporter is somebody who reports. Importer is somebody who imports and exporter is somebody who exports and so on.

61. “ Some English words are made up the same part ...”, in the sentence “part” means________.

A. different beginnings and different endings.

B. the same part which has several meanings

C. the root of a word

D. the same root which has different meanings

62. Which of the following is not true?

A. Apart from “port”, most English words have the same root which comes from the Latin word.

B. “Port” is the root forming some English words.

C. The root “ port” means “ to carry”

D. “ Port” has the root meaning “ to move” from one place to another.

63. By adding a prefix or a suffix to a root, we can get a word which has _______.

   A. the meaning of a Latin word      B. a different meaning

   C. the meanings of “in” or “out of” D. a lot of meanings

64. We can get a noun _________.

   A. just by adding “er” to verbs B. by changing a prefix

   C. only by adding “er” to a root      D. by adding a suffix to a verb

65. According to the passage, if we talk about a repairman, you know that he must be ________.

   A. somebody who has regained (恢复) health.

    B. a person who can repair something

   C. somebody who has good health

I am a 21-year- old girl, 1.67 metres in height. As a graduate from Zhejiang Travel School, I speak not only putonghua but also excellent English. Interested in Chinese history, geography and culture, I have read a lot about them especially those of zhejiang. So I know her places of interest very well. Besides, I worked part time as a guide for one year when at school.

Given the job, I’m sure to make a good guide.

My telephone number is . hoping to hear from you soon.

Yours sincerely
