阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

Cook's first voyage was primarily a voyage of astronomical inquiry. Edmund Halley, in 1716, suggested that the distance from the Sun to the Earth could be calculated by timing the transit of Venus across the face of the Sun. Transits of Venus are rare, and the 1761 transit observations had been disappointing. The next transit was to occur in 1769 (the following one would not happen until 1874) and steps were taken to insure better measurements of the phenomenon. King George III was petitioned and a ship was arranged. Cook was given command of the H.M. Bark Endeavor with orders to observe the transit of Venus across the Sun's disk, and also to explore the South Seas (Australia, Antarctica, and the North-West Passage were at this time only legends to European map makers). Also aboard was the young naturalist Joseph Banks, then a 25-year old Fellow of the Royal Society.

The first voyage of Captain Cook met with great success, and Joseph Banks became a shaker and mover in the circles of the Royal Geographic Society and elsewhere. A second voyage was planned, to find or disprove the existence of the Southern Continent, and make whatever other discoveries about South Pacific. Banks (in the newspapers it was Banks' expedition as much or more than Cook's) promised many of his friends a chance to visit St. George's Island (as Tahiti was known) in grand style. The ships were refitted, renamed Resolution and Adventure (to avoid offending the Spanish). While they were in dry-dock, Banks took it upon himself to supervise (监督) the construction of adequate quarters for himself and his entourage (随从). Cook, ever the optimist, hoped that it would all work out in the end but before she could have her first full trial Cook had to have the outrageous (野蛮的) upper works of the Resolution cut down. Banks stormed off the ship in a rage and did not return to Tahiti or the South Seas.

56. What is the real purpose of Captain Cook’s first voyage?

    A. To observe the transit of Venus B. To time the movement of the Sun

    C. To calculate the orbit of Venus D. To explore the sea passage to the east

57. Before Cook’s expedition, ______.

    A. only some European map makers had explored Australia

    B. Europeans had only heard of the existence of Antarctica

    C. sailors had only sailed to the north and the west

    D. Europeans had never known Australia and Antarctica

58. After his voyage with Captain Cook, Joseph Banks ______.

    A. became worried and doubtful about sea expedition

    B. was only interested in geography and nature

    C. became an enthusiast (热衷者) of sea exploration

    D. founded the Royal Geographic society in London

59. Which of the following statements is true about the preparation about Cook’s 2nd voyage?

    A. It was organized by Joseph Bank instead of Cook.

    B. The ship was renamed for “endeavor” was Spanish.

    C. Cook became worried about the safety of the ship.

    D. Cook became unsatisfied with Bank and his entourage.

60. The underlined word “petitioned” in the first paragraph means ______.

    A. satisfied B. requested C. encouraged D. suggested

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.

During the hours when you labor through your work, you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people that peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues (自言自语) as “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature and energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.

You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can make your life fit it better. Habit can help. Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (打乱) your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.

Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a yawn (呵欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine (常规的) work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.

61. Which of the following causes family quarrels?

    A. Not knowing each other’s energy cycle.

    B. Familiar monologues between husband and wife.

    C. A change in a family member’s energy cycle.

    D. Attempts to control the energy of other family members.

62. If you want to work better at your low point in the morning, you should ______.

    A. change your energy cycle B. overcome your laziness

    C. get up early than usual D. go to bed earlier

63. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will ______.

    A. help to keep your energy for the day’s work

    B. help you to control your temper early in the day

    C. enable you to get your energy on your routine work

    D. keep your energy cycle under control all day

64. What’s the best title of the passage?

    A. Change Your Habits B. Save Your Energy

    C. Daily Energy Cycle D. Temperature-and-Energy Peak

C

The producer appeared behind the recording studio window and smiled and waved to me like an old friend. And after I had read out a little test piece, he said, “That’s fine, wonderful, your voice is perfect, lively, wonderful.” Then I read a longer passage in English about the delights of touring in Britain, and another about the delights of visiting London, and both were “excellent” and “just right”, and I began to consider a job in radio.

To be honest, I was fairly sure of myself though I lacked experience. Across the room in the Hamburg News Agency where we both worked, a friend named Peter Turner called to me, “I say, Mike, a man on the phone here wants someone to do a recording in English, and I’ m booked up. Would you read something to him in English as a sort of test?” I did, and they said, “Perfect, lovely, wonderful, …” Would I come round?

It was after reading their passage in English in the studio that they noticed my vowel (元音) pronunciations were not altogether King’s English, or even Prince Philip’s, there was a larger silence than usual, then the voice said: “Fine, lovely…, but you said the word ‘castle’ with a short ‘a’. Could we have the passage again please, but this time say ‘castle’.”

This was easy. But then he noticed other differences in my pronunciation.

“It’s my northern English accent,” I said, angry, because I had to apologize for it.

“Oh, I see…but Mike, we’ll have to get it right, I’m afraid. The recording is for teaching English to German schoolchildren, and it must be spoken in the way it is taught in German schools.”

I read the passage again…and again…and again. But of course you cannot change the pronunciation of a lifetime in an hour. The studio men were in the state of having lost hope and underlined the vowels which caused me to feel angry, so that I’d remember them. Few, really. But because I had to concentrate (集中) on them, I made a lot of mistakes in my reading. Everyone got somewhat irritable (easily made angry), so we all went out for a beer.

65. Broadcasting did not make Mike nervous ______.

    A. although he had never done any before

    B. because he worked in a news agency

    C. because he was used to talking on the phone

    D. although the passages were long

66. They wanted Mike to change his pronunciation because ______.

    A. German schoolchildren did not like a northern accent

    B. it was different from the English taught in German schools

    C. it was different from the English spoken in Germany

    D. German schoolchildren were taught through recordings

67. Why did Mike’s reading of the passage get worse?

    A. He needed a drink to clear his throat.

    B. He was trying to do the recording in an hour.

    C. He was trying hard to get certain sounds right.

    D. He could not learn so many new sounds.

D

Scientists learned long ago that brain injuries can be powerful tool for investigating(调查) how human thought and memory are organized. A case study by two John Hopkins researchers is but the latest report. A 70-year-old librarian who suffered such an injury developed a remarkable symptom(症状):she lost the ability to name animals, though she could still name other living things, such as plants, or inanimate(非动物的) objects. Nor could she assign(name) physical attributes(属性) to animals—she could not, for example, answer the questions: “What color is an elephant?” Yet she could answer nonphysical questions about whether a particular animal lived on land or in the sea, or whether it was normally kept as a pet. And when shown a picture of, say, a lion with a horse’s head, she could tell right away that the two didn’t match. So what does it all mean? It’s clear that the brain has plain systems for classifying different types of objects, and it stores division of information, such as physical vs. (与……相对) non-physical characteristics, in different ways. Moreover, the study shows that the brain has two classification systems, one language-based and one sight-based, and that one can be destroyed while the other stays complete.

68. “Physical characteristics” is closest in meaning to       .

    A. appearance B. personality

69. This study shows that       .

    A. information regarding animal colors and home is stored in different ways by the brain

    B. a brain injured person is unable to see well the differences between animals and objects

    C. the brain stores non-physical characteristics of animals more effectively than physical

   characteristics

    D. a brain injured person can store only non-physical divisions of information in the brain

70. In the question “So what does it all means?”, “it” refers to the       .

    A. problem caused by brain injuries

    B. librarian’s inability so name an elephant

    C. experiment done by two researchers

    D. unusual symptoms(signs) shown by the librarian

71. “What Has Four Legs?” is an effective title for the passage because it       .

    A. raises an unsolved question

    B. shows the humor in the passage

    C. cannot be answered by the librarian

    D. relates animals to the topic

E

He was a good man in many ways, but he had the habit of talking to himself all the time. One day, a friend asked him why he did this. He answered that he had two very good reasons for it. M: Have you finished your paper for Friday yet?

W: No, it’s not a really long paper, and it’s not due for two more days. I should have plenty of time to finish it.

M: The teacher said she wanted three to pages, didn’t she?

W: Yes, three to five pages, typed and double-spaced. And she refused to accept anything hand-written.

M: That’s not a problem for me; I can get my paper on my computer in no time. My problem is that I just don’t have enough ideas on the title to those pages.

W: I guess you’d better get working on the paper. With only two days left until the paper’s due, there’s not much time.

M: Hi, mum. How are things?

W: Oh, hello, Mike. Are you alright?

M: Yeah, great! I just thought I’d phone to let you know we’re OK. The weather’s wonderful. I’m sitting here in short sleeves and I’m still hot. I can’t believe it’s December.

W: Lucky you! It’s like Siberia here. We’ve got the heating going all night. How was your flight in the end, by the way?

M: Ugh. Awful! We were delayed and had to sit around for hours so we didn’t take off till after midnight and it was five in the morning before we got to the hotel.

W: Oh, dear What a pity.

M: But we’re making up for it now. On Monday we had a great day on the beach just lying around in the sun and swimming-the water’s lovely, you know .Not at all cold. That was to recover from Sunday when we hired a car and drove all round the island, up into the mountains.

W: Oh, that’s good. I can see you’re going to have a good week.

M: Yeah; it’s all going too fast. One week is too short. I wish now we’d booked three weeks instead. Do you think you could come and meet us when we get back? The plane gets in at about six fifteen on the eighth.

W: Yes, of course, dear. Don’t worry, we’ll be there.

M: This storm is really bad. The wind is so strong it’s difficult to drive.

W: We’d better turn on the radio. We can find out what roads are open.

Announcer: This is one of the worst storms of the year. The weather service says that we’ll get more than 5 inches of rain today. Already some of the roads are closed. Highway 15 is closed south of Malibu and Highway 7 is closed north of Los Angeles. Highway 1 is open all the way.

M: Well, let’s take Highway 1.

M: Hi Alice, have you made any new Year’s plans yet?

W: Just the usual. I’d like to lose some weight, and I want to save some money.

M: Come on! Everybody makes those plans!

W: I know. Well, I hope I’ll improve my work, but that’s not a plan. I’m going to work harder. How about you?

M: Hmm, I gave up smoking last June. That was last year promise to myself.

W: So what do you want to do this year?

M; I want to start getting more exercise. I have to lose weight, so I’d like to join a health club. By way, I’d like to treat myself to a really nice vacation.

W: Oh? Where do you think you’ll go?

M: I don’t know. I might go to quiet beach in Mexico, or I might go fishing up in Canada. I haven’t up my mind yet.

Over 100 years ago Jane Fonda opened the first British hospital for women. There are still very few of these hospitals in England. This hospital is in Euston Road in London. Its location means that women from all over England can reach it quite easily.

Her aim when she opened the hospital was to provide a place where women could go and receive treatment from female doctors and nurses. She also wanted the hospital to provide jobs for female doctors at a time when it was very difficult for them to find work. Now the government has decided that the hospital will stay open. Many people feel very glad that the valuable service offered by hospital will continue.

Hi, everyone,

It's so nice to see all of you here. I'm John Smith and I come from the States.

I have been studying in this school since September 2003, and I have joined in quite a few very popular and unforgettable after-class activities.

The school often holds the English Corner, in which the students practice their spoken English. I have learned a lot more about China by talking with my Chinese schoolmates. On New Year's Eve we have a New Year party with wonderful performances of singing and dancing. In March, the school organized a tree-planting activity in the countryside. Recently many students have taken an active part in the English Speech Contest. All these activities have had a good effect on the training of the students' abilities, so they are warmly welcomed by the students.

  Thank you.
