阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项ABCD中,选出一个最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

             A.

In Europe, many people make friends across the borders(边界) through town twinning. Two towns in different countries decide to become twin towns.

Their citizens find pen-friends in the twin town. They exchange newspapers and stamps. The school teachers discuss teaching methods with the teachers in the twin town. Officials visit the twin town for celebrations. Ordinary citizens travel to the twin town, too, but not very often if it is far away.

Sometimes, schools even exchange school classes for two or three weeks! For example, German middle school students study for a while at the school in their twin town in Britain, staying with British families. A few months later, their British friends come to study in Germany.

Some towns even arrange exchange visits for theatre groups, choirs(歌唱队) and orchestras(管弦乐队). Others send lectures to the twin town who tell the people there all about their own town, and show photos and slides.

Some towns organize exhibitions to show works of art, for example paintings, by artists from their twin town.

Many British towns are so pleased with the results of the twinning that they set out to find more than one twin town !

Tonbridge, a middle-sized town in Kent, for example, has twin towns in Germany and in France. Richmond near London had links with Germany, France and a town in former Yugoslavia !

Town twinning can help making friends and helps people to learn from each other.

The World Trade Organization (WTO), founded on January 1,1995, aims to encourage international trade to flow as freely as possible, making sure that trade agreements are respected and that any disputes(争端) can be settled.

In the five years since its founding, the WTO has become well known as one of the world’s most powerful economic organizations, taking its place alongside the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

The system of global rules for international trade, however, dates back half a century to 1948 when the General Agreement on Tariffs(关税) and Trade(GATT) was formed after World War II.

As time went by, it became clear that the GATT had two major drawbacks --- the limited areas of trade it covered, and the lack of an effective system to settle disputes.

After seven years of trade talks ending in 1994, the so-called Uruguay Round finally gave birth to the WTO, complete with an effective system to settle disputes and new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property(知识产权).

Even after seven years of talks and 22,500 pages of agreements there were still problems, especially the difficult-to-deal-with areas of agriculture and services, which the member nations agreed to revise in 2000.

The WTO, with its head office in Geneva, has 135 members with 30 more waiting to join.

69. From the passage we know that the GATT stopped working ____.

A. soon after World War II ended

B. a little more than 50 years after World War II.

C. just in the year 1994.

D. seven years before the Uruguay Round talk.

70. Compared with the GATT, the WTO __________.

A. didn’t pay enough attention to services and intellectual property.

B. got its members to sign the agreements more easily.

C. has got too many areas of international trade to deal with to work effectively.

D. can do better to settle disputes in more areas of international trade.

71. In the new century the WTO will _________.

A. take the place of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

B. have more members and do much more to settle more problems.

C. make complete new rules in every area of international trade.

D. have new rules covering trade in services and intellectual property.

72. The underlined word “drawbacks” means __________.

A. changes B. weak points C. strong points D. improvements

听力录音稿:

1. W: Your university seems quite new. How old is it ?

M: Well. This particular building was only built five years ago, but the school itself was built half a century ago,in 1950.

2. W:The map shows that this street goes down-town.

M:Yes, but what we want to know is how to get to the park.

3. W: Do you come to this place often ?

M: I used to, but recently I’ve been working a lot overtime, so I have not got much time to enjoy myself.

4. W: Is it raining out ?

M: Is it raining ? Look at my clothes, they’re all wet.

5. W: Mark is very nice, but his sister talks too much.

M: I know, and she isn’t especially friendly, either.

6: W: Have you packed your bag, Steven?

M: I’m going to do it now.

W: How long will you be away ?

M: I won’t get back until Saturday evening or Sunday morning. I have a lot of business in Los Angeles.

W: Do you need to stay that long ?

M: I don’t want to, but I have to. I have a lot of meetings on he schedule.

W: You know, you’ll miss Peter’s birthday party.

M: Oh ! I forgot about that ! What time is the party ?

 W: Two o’clock Saturday afternoon.

M: Well, I’ll try to get back Saturday morning.

W: That will make Peter very happy.

7: W: It was exactly two years ago that we moved to this town. You started working on your degree and I started working down at the lab.

M: It seems like only yesterday. I suppose that I’m so busy I don’t even notice how the time passes.

W: I’d expect the opposite. I mean, the way you’ve been studying, working on experiments and writing dozens of papers, it might seem more like four years ago.

M: Haven’t you noticed how time seems to crawl when you have nothing to do ? But how time flies when you are busy with what you really like to do.

W: That’s true. Those days when there is not much to do at the lab don’t seem to end.

M: Just wait a little longer. As soon as I finish my degree we’ll open our own laboratory.

8: W: Where were you yesterday ?

M: I was at home asleep.

W: Asleep! I thought that you had to take an exam.

 M: I was sick. I had a fever. I couldn’t get out of bed.

W: You still look a little sick. You ought to go back to bed.

M:I’m going now. I just came here to speak to my professor.

W: What did he tell you ?

M: He said that I would be able to take a make-up exam.

W:Well, that’s all right then. Are you going straight home ?

M: I have to stop at the drugstore on the way. I need some more aspirin.

W: Well, take care of yourself.

 M: Okay. Thanks.

9: Hans said to his friend Kurt, “I’m going to take my car and drive to London.”

Kurt said, “Driving to London is very difficult. You aren’t going to find your hotel.”

But Hans was not afraid. He drove to Calais, put his car on the ship, took it off at Dover, and drove to London.

He stopped near the city and looked at his map. Then he drove into London, but he didn’t find his hotel. He drove round and round for an hour, and then he stopped and got out of his car. A taxi came, and Hans stopped it. “ Take me to the Brussels Hotel”, he said. But he did not get into the taxi, he got back into his car. The taxi man laughed, but then he drove to the Brussels Hotel, and Hans followed him in his car. They reached the hotel in two minutes.

10:When I went to bed last night, I fell asleep quickly. I must have been tired because I had been working so hard for several hours. So I forgot to close the windows before getting into bed. If I had remembered, the thief wouldn’t have got in. But he was given a perfect chance to enter the house. The next time I work late I will lock the house carefully.

A policeman came to see me about the theft.“I’ve been told to investigate,” he said.“So I want to ask you several questions. First how did the thief get in?”I told him that I had left the windows open. “You should be more careful,” he said, “ If people looked after their houses carefully, we wouldn’t have so much work to do.”
