Sequoyah was a young Indian, son of a white businessman and an Indian woman. At an early age, he became interested in “the talking leaf”, an expression that he used to refer to the white man's written records. Although many believed this “talking leaf” to be a gift from the Great Spirit, Sequoyah refused to accept that theory. Like other Indians of the period, he was illiterate(文盲), but his decision to change the situation led to the invention of an 86-character alphabet(字母表) based on the sounds that he heard.

His family and friends thought him mad(了疯的), but while he was getting well after a hunting accident, he set out to invent a form of communication for his own people as well as for other Indians. In 1821, after twelve years of work, he successfully developed a written language that would help thousands of Indians to read and write.

Sequoyah's wish to invent a written language has caused him to be remembered among the important inventors. The large redwood trees of California, called “sequoias” in his honour, will further print his name in history.

51. What is the most important reason that Sequoyah will be remembered?

A. He could read and write.      B. He succeeded in inventing an alphabet.

C. California redwoods were named in his honour.

D. He became well from his madness and helped the people.

52. What is the attitude(态度) of Sequoyah's family towards his idea of developing his own “talking leaf”?

A. They encouraged him.       B. They decided to help him.

C. They asked him to teach them to read and write.

D. They thought that there was something wrong with his mind.

53. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. Sequoyah developed a form of writing with the help of his friends.

B. Sequoyah was a very clever young man.

C. Sequoyah spent twelve years developing his alphabet.

D. Sequoyah was honoured by having some trees named after him.

“Everyone else has a mobile phone!” Lily said to her parents, trying to get a cell phone as a gift for her 14th birthday. Her parents gave in.

Curious (好奇的) to know how her daughter would use her phone, Mrs. Wang, Lily's mother followed her to the school bus in the morning. The bus seated 20 boys and girls, half of whom had mobile phones. One rang and several teen owners felt in their bags.

The mobile phone seems to have become something necessary for today's teens in Beijing. According to a survey(调查), 56% of 16-year-old children now have a mobile phone.

The mobile phone has been turned into a secret messaging service by teen users. When they talk on the cell phones, their parents are not able to eavesdrop on the second line.

The interviews with 2,019 young people under 16 years of age found that they like text messaging services because they offer a secret way of keeping in touch. The days of secret notes in the classroom are dying out.

Many schools have banned students using mobile phones. But they are not very successful. Still phones ring in class and disturb study. Besides, people are worried about the health risk to kids using mobile phones. Scientists believe that children may be harmed by the mobile radiation(辐射).

  54. The story of Lily shows us___________.

Recently, a professor of philosophy (哲学) in the United States has written a book called Money and the Meaning of Life. He has discovered that how we deal with money in our day-to-day life has more meaning than we usually think. One of the exercises he asked his students to do is to keep a record of every penny they spend for a week. From the way they spend their money, they often see what they really value (重视) in life.

He says our relation (关系) with others often becomes clear when money enters the picture. You might have wonderful friendship with somebody and you think that you are very good friends. But you will know him only when you ask him to lend you some money. If he does, it brings something to the relationship that seems stronger than ever before. Or it can suddenly weaken the relationship if he doesn't. This person may say that he has a certain feeling, but if it is not carried out in the money world, there is something less real about it.

Since money is so important to us, we consider those who have a lot of it to be very important. The author interviewed some millionaires in researching his book.

Question: What is the most surprising thing you have discovered about being rich, because you are a self-made man?

Answer: The most surprising thing is how people give me so much respect. I am nothing. I don't know much. All I am is rich.

People just have an idea of making more and more money, but what is it for? How much do I need in my life? In his book, the professor uncovered an important need in modem society: to bring back the idea that money is a tool rather than the end. Money plays an important role in the material world, but expecting money to give happiness may be missing the meaning of life.

59. According to the first paragraph, people have not realized__________.

A. how important money is in their day-to-day life

B. how one spends money shows what is important to him

C. that money is more important than their life

D. that their understanding of life is more important than money

60. The author seems to believe that asking your friend to lend you some money___________.

A. is a good way to test your friendship

B. will do harm to your friendship

C. will do good to your friendship

D. is a good way to break off your friendship

61. What can we learn about the millionaire from his answer in the interview?

A. He does not feel that he is well educated.

B. He does not think that he is a very important person.

C. He does not think that being rich should get so much attention.

D. He does not consider himself to be very successful.

62. What does the American professor of philosophy want to explain in his book?

A. Money is an end. B. Money is a tool.

C. Money is everything. D. Money is unimportant.

Reading to dogs is an unusual way to help children improve their literacy skills (读写能力) , With their shining brown eyes, wagging tails, and unconditional love, dogs can provide the nonjudg-mental listeners needed for a beginning reader to gain confidence(自信心), according to Intermountain Therapy Animals (ITA) in Salt Lake City. The group says it is the first program in the country to use dogs to help develop literacy in children, with the introduction of Reading Education Assistance Dogs (READ).

The Salt Lake City Public Library is sold on the idea. “Literacy specialists admit that children who read below the level of their fellow pupils are often afraid of reading aloud in a group, often have lower self-respect, and regard reading as a headache.” said Lisa Myron, manager of the children's department.

Last November the two groups started “Dog Day Afternoon” in the children's department of the main library. About 25 children attended each of the four Saturday afternoon classes, reading for half an hour. Those who attended three of the four classes received a “pawgraphed” book at the last class.

The program was so successful that the library plans to repeat it in April. According to Dana Thumpowsky, public relations manager.

59. What is mainly discussed in the text?

A. Children's reading difficulties. B. Advantages of raising dogs.

60. Specialists use dogs to listen to children reading because they think

A. dogs are young children's best friends

B. children can play with dogs while reading

C. dogs can provide encouragement for shy children

D. children and dogs understand each other

61. By saying “The Salt Lake City Public Library is sold on the idea,” the writer means the library ______________.

A. uses dogs to attract children B. accepts the idea put forward by ITA

C. has opened a children's department D. has decided to train some dogs

62. A “pawgraphed” book is most probably_____________.

A. a book used in Saturday classes B. a book written by the children

C. a prize for the children D. a gift from parents
