With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone (克隆) the animal and save the endangered species (物种). That’s a little similar to what a Texas A & M University researchers have been undertaking for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark(诺亚方舟)”.
Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos (胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen(氮). If certain species should become extinct, Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A&M’S College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to reintroduce the species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds and reptiles(爬虫类的) will become extinct in over 100 years. The panda, native only to China, is in danger of becoming extinct in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to implant the embryo into a host animal.
The entire procedure could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear transfer (核子移植) of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available (capable of being used) panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (having a baby). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be groundbreaking science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is worth the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the Project at Texas A&M, the first-ever attempt at cloning a dog.
“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly appreciate their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed”.
56. The aim of “Noah’s Ark” project is to_______.
   A. make effort to clone the endangered pandas

   B. save endangered animals from dying out
   C. collect DNA of endangered animals to study
   D. transfer the nuclear of one animal to another
57. According to Professor Kraemer, the major problem in cloning pandas would be the lack of __________.
  A. available panda eggs B. host animals
  C. qualified researchers D. enough money
58. The best title for the passage may be _______.
   A. China’s Success in Pandas Cloning

   C. Exploring the Possibility to Clone Pandas
   D. China —— the Native Place of Pandas Forever
59. From the passage we know that_______.
   A. Kraemer and his team have succeeded in cloning a dog
  B. scientists try to implant a panda’s egg into a rabbit

Weather changes when the temperature and the amount of water in the atmosphere change. We can see and feel water coming from the atmosphere when we have rain. But the water must somehow get back to the atmosphere. Meteorologists(气象学家) call this the water cycle.
There are many stages in the water cycle. Rain falls when water vapor in clouds condenses (凝结). Drops of water form and fall to the ground. The water soaks into the ground and feeds streams and rivers. A lot of rain falls into the sea. The heat of the sun evaporates some of the water in the ground and in the rivers, lakes, and the sea. It changes the liquid water into water vapor. The vapor rises onto the air. Water vapor is normally invisible. On a very damp or humid day, however, you can sometimes see water vapor rising from a puddle (水坑) or pond in a mist (薄雾) above the water. Water vapor also gets into the air from living things. Trees and other plants take in water through their roots and give off water vapor from their leaves. People and land animal drink water and breathe out water vapor. In all these ways the water returns to the air. There it gathers to form clouds and condenses to form rain. The rain falls to earth, and the cycle starts again. It continues even if snow or hail (冰雹) fall instead because both eventually melt to form water. The amount of water vapor in the air depends on the temperature. The air is more moist (潮湿) in the tropics (热带) than in the cold polar regions.

Recently, in the hope of earning both money and social experience, I became a door-to-door salesman. I once read a saying: “If somebody wants something of your, you will be treated as warmly as spring, but if they don't you may be treated as coldly as winter.” You may consider his an exaggeration(夸张), but if you are a salesman, it is clearly correct.
You would never have found it to be so true if you hadn't been a salesman. You needn't stand doubtful looks and unfriendly comments; you needn't listen to something completely wrong and nod to say that it was quite right; you needn't always keep patience and a smile; you needn't repeat the same sentences over again; you needn't talk to somebody you dislike…
I did this work for a month; then I decided to give it up. Apart from the above reasons, I found I was paying too much attention to the job and thus sacrificing my study time. The latest test result proved that my grades were getting lower. Even worse, I hadn't enough time to join my classmates in college activities lower. Even worse, I hadn't enough time to join my classmates in college activities. Sometimes I felt lonely and unhappy because of both my study and my part-time job. Now I don't think it is worth doing such a thing even though I was earning money at great cost.
Newspapers and magazines often publish stories about good students who do part-time work and keep high scores in class. But according to my experience, part-time work can have some strong bad effects on study.
Most students don't see the relationship between study and work in a correct

way. In my opinion, if it isn't must for financial reasons, students should be cautious about taking up a part-time job. In western countries even the children of very rich families take part in hard jobs during the summer vacation.
64. What caused the writer to give up his part-time job?_________
  A. Too much attention to it and his grades getting lower.
  B. He often missed some college activities.

  A. to do part-time job was unnecessary 
   B. part-time jobs had good effect upon study
   C. it hard to plan study and work correctly 
  D. part-time jobs were good for students

  C. Those in great need of money.
  D. Those from very rich families.

American doctors say that mothers who smoke cigarettes before their babies are born may slow the growth of their babies' lungs. They say reduced lung growth could cause the babies to suffer breathing problems and lung disease later in life. Doctors in Boston, Massachusetts studied 1 100 children. The mothers of some of the children smoked, the other mothers did not. Doctors found that the lungs of the children whose mothers smoked were 8% less developed than the lungs of the children whose mothers did not smoke, and that the children whose mother smoked developed 20% more cold and breathing diseases than other children later in life.
Another recent study found that children had a greater chance of developing lung cancer if their mothers smoked. The study also showed that the danger of lung cancer increased only for sons and not for daughters, and that the father's smoking did not affect a child's chance of developing lung cancer.

Any mistake made in the printing of a stamp raises its value to stamp collectors. A mistake on one inexpensive postage stamp has made the stamp worth a million and a half times its original value.
The mistake was made more than a hundred years ago in the British colony of Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean. In 1847 an order for stamps was sent to a London printer—Mauritius was to become the fourth country in the world to issue stamps.
Before the order was filled and delivered, a ball was planned at Mauritius' Government House, and stamps were needed to send out the invitations. A local printer was instructed to copy the design for the stamps. He accidentally inscribed the words “Post Office” instead of “Post Paid” on the several hundred stamps that he printed.
Today there are only twenty-six of these misprinted stamps left fourteen One Penny Orange-Reds and twelve Two Penny Blues. Because of the Two Penny Blue's rareness and age, collectors have paid as much as $16 800 for it.

(Text 1)M: Why don’t’ you go to a show or something tonight?

W: As a matter of fact, I thought Judy might like to go to a concert

M: Let’s have a look and see what’s on … You might try the concert at the Festival Hall.

W: That sounds nice.

(Text 2)M: Let’s drop in here for a cup of coffee.

W: Well, I’d love to , but in fact, I’ve got to make a rather early start tomorrow.

(Text 3)M: I’m terribly sorry, but I’ve broken a plate.

W: That’s all right

M: I must apologize. I’ll buy you a new one tomorrow.

W: No, please don’t. I couldn’t let you do that.

(Text 4)W: What’ the film on Sunday?

M: Railway Station

W: Good. Let’s go to the cinema.

M: OK, I’ll see you at 7:00 at the cinema. Bye.

(Text 5)W: Mr. Brown is not in at the moment. Can I take a message?

M: OK. He’s booked Flight No. B-A1-2-7-9. It leaves at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow. But he must be there at least one hour before checking in.

II. (Text 6)

M: I think I was very lucky to get the job. Now we are able to live in a little village.

W: Ah, but it won’t be a little village forever. This is a developing area. There will be a lot more people here in about five years’ time.

M: Yes, but there won’t be any factories. Just two or three office buildings, and they will be far behind that woodland over there.

W: How did you sleep last night, by the way?

M: Very nice. Never slept better. It was so quiet!

W: I didn’t sleep too well. I couldn’t get used to the silence. The only noise I heard last night was a bird at about two o’clock in the morning.

M: Well, the silence was wonderful for me.

(Text 7)

W: What are you planning to do with your friends this winter vacation?

M: We are planning to travel.

W: Where are you traveling?

M: To San Francisco, Los Angeles, New your and Boston.

W: How are you going?

M: By motorcycle.

W: By motorcycle? How long will it take?

M: Three weeks.

W: Why are you making this trip?

M: We’re trying to collect money for the wild life project.

W: What will the money be used for?

M: For rescuing wild deer. They’re disappearing.

W: That sounds like a great idea. Good luck with your trip.

M: Thank you.

(Text 8)

W: Good morning, sir. Can I help you?

M: I hope so, because I’ve got a complaint to make.

W: A complaint? Nothing serious, I hope. What’s the problem?

M: Well, it’s this cat I bought from you yesterday.

W: Oh, yes, the cat. Is there anything wrong with it?

M: Anything wrong with it? Is there anything right with it?

W: Isn’t it feeling very will, sir?

M: No, it isn’t feeling very well. It’s dead.

W: Dead? It can’t be!

M: What do you mean “It cant be!” It can be. And it is dead.

W: No… it’s still sleeping. It’s a very delicate animal. It is still small. It needs a lot of sleep! And it was very tired after that long journey. All that way in the plane…

M: It’s not sleeping. How can it be sleeping when it’s not breathing?

W: Perhaps if we sing to it , it will wake up.

M: Look, I’ve had enough of this. You sold me a dead cat and I want my money back.

(Text 9)

M: Excuse me, I wonder if you would tell me how to find a place where I can have my shoes fixed . I’m new in town.

W: Well, of course you can always look in the Yellow Pages in the back of the telephone book under repair shop. But I think there is a good shop not far from here. Take the first street on the left and walk past three blocks. I can’t remember the name of the shop, but you’ll run into it. It’s near the police station. By the way, do you know about the Town Guide? It has all kinds of useful information. I think you’ll find it in any bookstore.

M: Thanks a lot. You’ve been very helpful. And I’ll look for that Town Guide next

time I’m in a bookstore. Let’s see, you said the repair shop was three blocks on the right?

W: No, first street on the left, then three blocks.

M: Thanks again.

(Text 10)

M: This is a true story about a French couple, Paul and Mary, who were in Hong Kong on holiday and went to a restaurant for a meal.

W: They had a meal in their hotel?

M: No, what they did was go to a restaurant. Anyway, they couldn’t speak Chinese or English well, so they had to use sign language to order their meal. Well, this seemed to work all right. The waiter nodded and smiled and started to go to the kitchen.

W: He understood them.

M: Oh, I forgot to mention they had their pet dog, Rosa, with them and Mary reminded her husband that Rosa was hungry. They called the waiter back and they

pointed at the dog, Rosa, and made eating gestures. The waiter didn’t seem to understand and looked puzzled. But in the end he smiled and nodded and picked up the dog and took it into the kitchen. Paul and Mary were satisfied and chatted about their holiday experiences until their food was ready. After about an hour the waiter returned with their main course on a silver dish covered with a large silver lid. You’ll never believe this, but it really happened. When they lifted the silver lid they found their dog inside.

W: Did they eat their meal?

M: No, of course not. What happened was that they both suffered a mild nervous breakdown and took the next plane back to Paris.

W: And that’s a true story? I find it very unlikely to have happened.

M: It’s perfectly true. Really!

One possible version:

I have studied (been studying) in this school since last September, and I have joined in quite a few very popular and unforgettable after-class activities.

The school often holds the “English Corner”, in which the students practise their spoken English. I have learned a lot more about China by talking with the Chinese students. We had a New Year party with wonderful performances of singing and dancing. In March, the school organized a tree-planting activity in the countryside. Recently many students have taken an active part in the English Speech Contest. All these activities have a good effect on the training of the students’ abilities, so they are warmly welcomed.
