For the people of one tribe(部落) in Africa, it was taboo to count anything. If a man wanted to know how many goats he had, he looked quickly at them. Then he guessed how many goats there were. He thought something bad would happen to his goats if he counted them.
For another tribe in Africa, it was taboo to talk about the unhappiness of their forefather. These people thought that their forefather’s spirit would hear them and get angry, and then the spirit would punish them.
Saying his own name was taboo for an Eskimo(爱斯基摩人). He believed that spirits were always listening when he spoke. It would not be safe for him to say his name out loudly. (E篇)
There was a time when, if a lady got onto crowded bus or train, a gentleman would immediately stand up and offer her his seat. But now, things are different. Today a gentleman will probably look out of the window, or if he feels a bit shy, hides behind his newspaper. Either way, the lady will have to stand until someone else gets off.
You can’t entirely blame(责备) men for this change in manners. Gone are the days when women could be referred to as weakers without causing any trouble. A whole generation of women has grown up demanding equality with men, not just equality in jobs or education, but in social life. Hold a door open for some women and you are likely to get an angry lecture on treating women as weakers, unable to open doors for themselves. Take a girl out for a meal and she will probably insist on paying her share of the bill. On second hand, that is perhaps not a bad idea.
It’s no wonder, then, that men have given up some ways of politeness and consideration which they used to show toward women. On the other hand, the men’s active politeness is perhaps slowly being replaced by true consideration for the needs and feelings of women, so that men can see women as equal human beings, rather than as weakers or something that can be used to please them.
Maybe it is worth women’s while to stand in the bus or train.
63. A woman may get angry if a man holds a door open for her, because ________.
A. She doesn’t like to be waited.
B. She thinks it impolite for a man to do so.
C. Women enjoy opening the door.
D. She feels herself treated as a weaker.
64. What do women really need today?
A. Men’s active politeness and consideration.
B. Men’s true consideration for their needs and feelings.
C. Trying to win men’s favour(宠爱).
D. Men’s good manners shown in the past.
65. The writer most probably is ____________.
A. a man who thinks the changes are reasonable
B. a woman who doesn’t agree with the changes today
C. a woman who wants to be abused(虐待)
D.a man who doesn’t agree with the changes today
