Former U. S. Vice President Al Gore, who came close to winning the presidency two years ago, said he will not run in 2004, and probably will not have another opportunity to seek the White House.
Though Gore would have been a frightening Democratic(民主党的)main runner, his decision to give up the 2004 race probably helped his party’s chances in the general election against President George W. bush, Democrats said.
Many did not want to see Bush-Gore II.
“The last campaign was an extremely difficult one,”Gore told CBS TV show“60 Minutes”on Sunday.
While saying he still had the energy and drive to run again, Gore recognized,“There are a lot of people within the Democratic Party who felt exhausted ( by the 2000 race ) … who felt like, OK, ‘ I don’t want to go through that again.’ And I’m frankly sensitive to that feeling.”
In nearly two dozen interviews after Gore announced his plans. Democrats dutifully claimed their party had lost a top candidate, but one after another, they praised Gore for taking an early exit from a primary race he could have won, sparing them a repeat.
Gore, 54, said he was making his decision“in the full understanding that it probably means that I will never have another opportunity to run for president.”

In the early part of the twentieth century, racism(种族歧视)was widespread in the United States. Many African Americans were not given equal chances in education or employment. Man has invented ways to keep warm, but how do animals defend themselves? They cannot do as man can , but nature has taken care of the animal kingdom by providing animals with special instincts(本能), One of these instincts is known as hibernation.
“Sleeping like a dormouse(睡鼠)”is not only a common saying but is a reality. When winter comes, the dormouse and other hibernating animals have reached a fat state. They eat very well in warmer days laying down fat in their bodies and during hibernation this keeps them alive. Safe in their nests, or holes, they sleep soundly until the warmth of spring arrives.
Bats, tortoises, snakes, frogs even insects like butterflies, hibernate more or less completely. Some , like the squirrels, sleep during the coldest weather but are woken up by a warm period. During hibernation, the temperature of an animal’s body drops sharply. Breathing and heartbeats almost stop.
Another instinctive method of avoiding freezing cold is to escape by means of migration. Wild swans, seagulls, swallows and cuckoos are a few of the very many kinds of birds which fly thousands of miles, twice a year, to avoid cold. Many animals, especially those of the Arctic regions have summer and winter areas. The Arctic deer of North America, as the reindeer of Europe, move southward towards the forests when winter approaches(临近). They return to the northern area w hen the warmth of spring begins to be sensed.
There are animals which do not attempt to leave at the first sign of winter cold. Their instinctive means of defence is to dig out a deep hole, made soft and warm by filling with straw, leaves, and fur, In it they have a“secret place”containing food which they hope will last the winter through! Animals that fall into this class include the Arctic fox, the rabbit and the little field mice.

Bill Clinton also learnt how to use chopsticks so as to be able to show off at the state banquet in Beijing in 1998.
Ever since Richard Nixon first visited China in 1972, every successive US president has visited China. Learning to use chopsticks has been an important lesson for all of them, because it is not only a part of gastronomic (美食学的) culture, but also a political art, a “ small trick” to show off and win the host’s pleasure.
Nixon had set the example to American presidents to pay attention to the art of using chopsticks, which was also a convesation topic at the state banquet during his visit. This, just like the shots of Nixon downing Maotai, was televised throughout the world. From then on all the American presidents visiting China have tried their best to show off their skill in using chopsticks.
At the 1972 banquet, Premier Zhou Enlai noticed the dexterity (熟练) with which President Nixon used the chopsticks and praised him and Mrs. Nixon for their first-class skill. Mrs. Nixon immediately seized up on the topic with great relish and even let out the “secret” that they had been practising using chopsticks in the White House for their visit to China. For half a year the Nixons had been using chopsticks instead of knives and forks for their meals.
Nothing gave the Nixons more delight than to be praised by their host for their skill in using chopsticks. The success and prestige of a stateman is fully proved when he is praised by his host for immersing (使沉浸) himself into the culture of the country he is visiting.
