The house next door had been empty for so long that we had quite   21  what it was like to have neighbors. One day, however, a truck 22  near our front gate, and in a short time, tables, chairs, pictures and countless   23  things were heaped up by the roadside. A small car 24  out of which came a man, a woman and five children of 25 ages. The children laughed happily as the whole family went into the house. It was our first   26  to the Robinsons.

第三部分: 阅读理解(第一节, 40分;第二节 5小题,满分5)

A

In England three foreign gentlemen came to a bus stop. They studied the information on the post sign and decided which bus to take. About five minutes later the bus they wanted came along. They prepared to get on. Suddenly people rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted insulting remarks about the foreigners. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreign gentlemen looked puzzled and ashamed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus so that the first person who arrived at a bus-stop is the first person to get on the bus.

Learning the language of a country isn’t enough. If you want to ensure a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your hosts. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, You might see a man apparently shaking his head at another and assume (认为) that he is disagreeing. But in many parts of India a rotating (旋转) movement of the head is a gesture that express agreement or acceptance. Nodding your head when offered a drink in Bulgaria is likely to leave you thirsty. In that country you shake your head to express “yes” — a nod means “no”.

In Europe it is quite usual to cross your legs when sitting talking to someone, even at an important meeting. Doing this when meeting an important person in Thailand, however, could cause offence (冒犯). It is considered too informal an attitude for such an occasion. Also when in Thailand avoid touching the head of an adult — it’s just not done.

Attitudes to women vary considerably around the world. In Japan, for example, it is quite usual for men to plan evening entertainments for themselves and leave their wives at home.

Knowing about customs and attitudes is useful when you are travelling, but you also need to know the language used to express different degrees of formality (礼节).

In spite of television and other means to pass information, newspaper is still an important source. No country in the world has more daily newspapers than the USA. There are over 2,000 of them. The quality of some American papers is very high and their views are quoted all over the world. Well-known dailies like Washington Post or New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. Many people begin their day by reading the paper. In this way they learn what is going on in the world. Sometimes, however, they don’t have time to read the news carefully and must be satisfied with a quick look at the front page, at other times, they may be in such a hurry that they have time only for a glance at the headlines.

American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information. There are newspapers to satisfy all sorts of readers. Some newspapers are sensational, which feature crime, sex and gossip; some are serious, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. In bid cities there are many types of papers, with several different editions every day. In the small towns there are fewer newspapers and perhaps only one edition each day. In some areas the paper is even printed weekly.

Most newspapers have several sections, especially on Sundays when the section is larger than usual. There are, in addition to the front page with the most important news, the sports section and business page. Many of these newspapers print columns by well-known journalists of differing political and social views, in order to present a balanced picture.

Another type of publications which helps keep the population informed is magazines. Some magazines are published weekly, others are put on monthly. In an age when technology moves faster than most can keep up with, a small group of people still remain in the time of old-fashioned letters. Frankly speaking, I was once certain that traditional letters could never be replaced by other means of communication.

But a story about online communication changed my mind.

An old man, who suffered a lot from Parkinson’s disease, was not able to talk clearly and could hardly write his name. Living totally alone, he managed to keep in touch with nearly all the members of his family. How did he achieve this? He clicked out words on his computer keyboard.

I, therefore, managed to get an E-mail box as soon as the chance came. My life changed.

E-mail, and all online communication, is something truly different. It has capabilities (能力) that few other products can match.

E-mail is convenient. It takes less time with its fast speed and 24-hour connection. The slow postal service is no match. If you wouldn’t want to have a face-to-face talk with your manager, you might talk with him through E-mail even if you are in the same office.

Naming all the good things about online communication is not easy. But wait. E-mail can be inconvenient. It can waste time and energy. Just think what may happen when you take a short vacation and return to find your E-mail box filled with 200 unread messages. You could easily spend half a day clearing junk ads.

Then, online communication will keep us staying at our computer while it connects us to distant strangers. Once we throw ourselves into the machine, we may forget the human touches we once held so dear. I’m sure there is and always will be a place for the old-fashioned letter, phone call, and face-to-face meeting…even in the world of modern communication.

As I listen to the sound of the modem (调制解调器), I was excited at stepping out to the outside world but, at the same time, I sensed a loss of control over something valuable in my personal life.

51. What is the most probable meaning of the underlined word “junk”?

  (A) Old and useless.              (B) New and useful.

  (C) Short but valuable. (D) Long but clear.

52. What caused the writer to become interested in E-mail and online communication?

  (A) The sound of the modem.          (B) His own illness.

  (C) The changing of his life. (D) A sick old man’s experience.

53. What does the writer think of online communication?

  (A) It should replace old-fashioned letters completely.

  (B) It is perfect and always does good to you.

  (C) It is extremely useful and convenient, but it may be inconvenient or even harmful.

  (D) It does more harm than good.

54. According to the writer, traditional means of communication will never disappear because ____________________.

  (A) they are convenient and popular though they are slow

  (B) they help to keep the friendly relationship between people

  (C) most people cannot keep up with the development of technology

  (D) modern means of communication does too much harm

55. How did the sick old man keep in touch with his family members?

  (A) With the help of his computer.    (B) By writing letters with his pen.

  (C) By making telephone calls. (D) By visiting them regularly.

D

In this century the traditional American family is constantly faced with the threat of breakdown. Some sociologists suggest that one little – noticed cause may be the introduction of the TV dinner.

Before the appearance of television seats, the American dinner was a big event for the family. In many homes dinner time may be the only time when everyone got together. A typical dinner was usually in three stages. In the preparation stage, the children and Father frequently helped with setting while Mother put the last touches on the roast. In the eating stage, family members shared the day’s experiences and more than food was consumed. In this stage families got to know one another and made joint decisions around the dinner table, and thus the family solidarity was strengthened. In the cleaning – up stage, children or Father again gave their hands, so that their significance to the home community was clear. Unfortunately, all of these have been erased by a product—the television set.

By the beginning of the 1980s, the typical American family dinner was just twenty minutes long. The speed – up of this once – leisurely experiences is clearly connected to the overall pace of modern life and maybe a model of the modern life is the TV dinners—meals designed to be consumed between the opening and closing credits of a half – hour program. The once family affair has now become nothing more than the use of a fork and knife.

 Wealth and Happiness

Some people think wealth can bring happiness, so they work hard to achieve it. After getting it, they feel very happy and enjoyable. Even their spending money is a kind of happiness. For example, when one gets a fortune, the family members will come and try to share it. Sometimes they’ll quarrel with one another, trying to share more. Do you think it can bring you happiness?

In my opinion, I think there is no doubt that wealth brings happiness. Especially in the modern society. If you have wealth, you can lead a happy life. But we should take a proper attitude towards wealth. Remember: Money is not everything. Many things can not be bought with money.
