Vancouver is a young city, even by North American standards. It was not yet a town when British Columbia became part of the Canadian confederation (联盟)in 1871. The city’s history, such as it is, remains risible to the naked eyes: periods of history are formed in a neat pile from east to west along the waterfront, from cobblestone late-Victorian Gastown to shiny postmodern glass cathedrals(大教堂) of commerce.
The Chinese, among the first to recognize the possibilities of Vancouver’s setting, came to British Columbia during the 1850s seeking the gold that inspired them to name the Province Gum-shan, or Gold Mountain. As laborers, they built the Canadian Pacific Railway, giving Vancouver a purpose-one beyond natural scenery that Royal Navy captain George Vancouver admired during his lunchtime cruise around its harbor on June 13, 1792. The Canadian transcontinental railway, along with the city’s Great While Fleet of ships, gave Vancouver a full week’s edge over the California ports in shipping tea and silk to New York at the end of the 19th century.
For its original people, the Coast Salish people, Vancouver was the sacred spot where the mythical Thunderbird and Killer Whale threw wind and rain all about the heavens during their brave battles. How else to explain the coast’s changeable weather? Devotees of a later religious(宗教) tradition might worship in the bushes of Stanley Park or Christ Cathedral, the city’s oldest church.
Vancouver, with a large population of 2 million, is developing. The mild climate, beautiful natural scenery, and relaxed outdoor lifestyle is attracting many to settle British Columbia’s business center, and the number of visitors is increasing for the reasons. Many people get their first sight of Vancouver when catching an Alaskan cruise, and many return at some point to spend more time here.
56. It can be inferred from the passage that
A. the cities in North America usually have a long history
B. Vancouver is a city with a history of less than 134 years

57. The Chinese came to British Columbia to
A. recognize the possibilities of Vancouver’s setting
B. look for gold C. name the province Gum-shan
D. build the Canadian Pacific Railway
58. What can be learnt from the passage?
A. Tea and silk were often transported from west to east at the end of 19th century
B. Vancouver was a sacred spot for people all over the world
C. The mythical(神话) of the battles resulted in the changeable weather in Vancouver
D. Stanley Park was the oldest park in Vancouver
59. Many people choose to live in Vancouver because of the statements except that
A. the climate is mild B. the natural scenery is beautiful
C. the outdoor lifestyle is relaxing
D. they get their first sight when catching an Alaskan cruise(巡游)

Before I came to China, I had heard that, although North Americans eat more than Chinese, Chinese eat better. Since I have come to China, I have been able to experience these differences first-hand. A whole new world of food has been opened up to me.
Along with these new experiences came the quite unexpected introduction to the rituals(惯例) associated with eating. For example, shortly after arriving, I was gently criticized for filling somebody’s teacup all the way up instead of half way. This was a signal to the person that I desired that he leave.
There than be mixed messages about what it means when you do something associated with food. But the fact is that there may be a message contained in the preparation, serving and consumption of food in China. This was an idea that was totally new to me!
More than one Chinese has made the comment to me that they were unhappy with the results of inviting a foreigners to a meal. They told me that the foreigner was not appreciative of the meal that was served to him or her and was hard to please.
Having played the part of foreigner at more one Chinese buffet, I can understand where the misunderstandings come from. I myself have felt very uncomfortable some of the dinners I have invited to.
One time I was invited to a dinner in a famous restaurant in Tianjin. Its menu was based on seafood. I was still relatively new to the concept that your fish would be brought live to your table. In Canada you are never introduced to your meal before hand. Something we don’t like is considering what our food looks like before the actual consumption(吃喝).
However, having been in China for one year, I went along and helped point out some the selections for the evening meal. I hesitated at the scorpions, but swallowed my distaste and indeed found later that they are tasty.
The meal was winding its way along without any problems. Then they brought out the lobster. I looked at it and then looked it again and that it was still moving! It had been brought out live to show that out raw lobster was indeed very fresh.
At the point, I nearly lost it. It took all my composure for me to stay seated at the table and not hurl myself in the bathroom and bring up the contents of the previous dishes.
Now the interesting thing is when I tell that story to foreigner, the reaction is always the same: Horror, sympathy, shock. When I tell the same story to a Chinese, they don’t understand my point of view. In fact, I often think that they believe that there is something truly wrong with me and not with the fact that a lobster had serve live at the table.
60. According to the author of the passage, it’s the Chinese custom
A. to fill somebody’s teacup all the way up
B. not to fill somebody’s teacup full
C. not to fill somebody’s teacup half way
D. not to desire the guest to leave

A. she disliked scorpions(蝎子) and lobster(龙虾)
B. the services in the restaurants were not good enough
C. she disliked that the things were brought lie to the table
D. She thought the food was not fresh enough
62. It can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage that
A. the author can get support from foreigners
B. Chinese don’t understand the author’s point of view
C. something is truly wrong with the author
D. different countries may have different ritual of consumption
63. The word “buffet” in fifth paragraph most probably means
A. meal B. party C. food D. service

Recently I and my wife, along with a travel companion, were in a tiny town of Battambang in central Cambodia. We hired a guide to take us up the river to our next destination at Siem Reap. This was to be a six-hour trop followed by crossing Lake Sap, the largest lake in central Asia. Battambang is an extremely poor area, and our mode of transportation was a very small, old boat not much larger than the there of us. With six bags tied to the front of the boat, four travelers, and the boatman, I figured we were overloaded by at least a ton. We frequently had seen four or five people on a single motorbike. So no one but us was concerned about our weight. We had been on the water only a few minutes when our pilot made for shore and jumped from our boat to another. Our guide said not to worry; he would only be a minute. He added, “We need to pick up live children for their legs.” My wife and I exchanged glances. We are pretty open-minded, especially when traveling to a third-world country. It was obvious there was little room in our tiny vessel for chickens. If we had to take them along, we were willing to hold them on our legs—there was no place else to put them. The thought even occurred to me that perhaps the chickens were needed if the boat’s tiny engine stopped in the middle of nowhere. I had a vision of us holding them over the side of the boat while their tiny legs paddled(划) away, guiding us to safety. After all, our guide had said we needed them for their legs. We continued to make many jokes about live chickens drawing us to shore if the boat turned over and we were about eating them if we were left on a wild island. Meanwhile our guide just gave us a puzzled look. Finally my wife turned to him and asked, “How many chickens are we taking?” At first he seemed totally surprised, and then a large smile spread over his face. He bent over and began to laugh uncontrollably. My wife turned to me and said, “I’m glad he finds the thought of us holding chicken on our legs for 6 hours so funny.” When he finished laughing, he looked at us and pronounced every word loudly and clearly, “No live chickens! I said, ‘We need life jackets for the lake!’” It took a moment for this to sink in, and then we all had a good laugh. In fact, for the next six hours he kept asking us if our “chicken” fit all right and then laughed wildly, “Americans, so funny!” he kept saying.
64. The funny story happened
A. in the tiny town of Battambang B. on a motorbike
C. on a small and old boat D. on a wild island
65. The pilot left their boat to
A. pick up live chickens B. pick up live jackets
C. make room for live chickens D. make the boat weigh less
66. Which of the following events truly happened?
A. The couple held the chickens on their legs
B. The chickens’ legs paddled the boat guiding to safety
C. They ate the chickens while they were left on the wild island
D. They made many jokes about live chickens
67. The guide bent over and laughed uncontrollably because
A. he suddenly understood what the misunderstand was
B. he found the thought of holding chickens on their legs funny
C. he thought the American couple were funny
D. he thought all the Americans were funny

Learn another language isn't easy, but most people can learn a second language well if they're willing to put in the necessary time. Here are sane practical suggestions for studying effectively, overcoming anxiety, and learning the grammar and skills necessary for success in foreign language classes.
Study every day
Language lemming is cumulative: you cannot put it off until the weekend. Study one or two hours for every class hour if you want a good mark.
Distribute (分配) your study time in 15 to 30 minutes period throughout the day
Study a different task each time: vocabulary now, grammar next, etc. Get an overview during the first half hour: spend 10 minutes reviewing dialog, 10 minutes learning new vocabulary, 10 minutes learning new grammar… So you'll at least have looked at it all. About 80% of your study time should be spend on recitation (背诵) or practice.
Attend and participate (参与) in every class — even if you aren't well prepared
Class time is your best opportunity to practice, Learn the grammar and vocabulary outside of class in order to make full use of the class time. Spend a few minutes "warming up" before each class by speaking or reading the language.
Make yourself comfortable in the classroom
Get to know your classmates, so you'll feel you're among friends. Visit your teacher during office hours to get acquainted (熟悉的) : explain your goals and fears about the course to your teacher.
Learn grammar if you don't already know it
Grammar is the skeleton (骨架) and the basic structure of a language, and you must learn it.
Practice for tests by doing what you'll have to do on the test
If the test will require you to write, then study by writing — including spelling and accents. If you' re asked to listen, practice listening. Ask for practice questions and make up your own test questions. Try to invent changes on patterns and forms. Over learning is also required in tests preparation: study beyond the paints of recognition to mastery.
Develop a good attitude
Have a clear personal reason for taking the class. Set personal goals for what you want to learn. Leave perfectionism at the door; give yourself permission to make mistakes and learn from them.
68. What does the underlined word "cumulative" in "Paragraph 3" probably mean?
A. process of gaining knowledge or skill by doing and seeing things
B. having to do with comparison
C. having ability to do what is needed
D. increasing in amount by one addition after another
69. A good learner is one who _____ according to the passage.
A. never permits himself to make mistakes
B. can learn something from the mistakes he makes
C. follows the goals that other persons set for themselves
D. can get to know his classmates and doesn't take his teachers' advice
70. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Tips on studying a foreign language
B. Advice on how to learn grammar
C. Suggestions for studying vocabulary effectively
D. How to make yourself comfortable in the classroom
E
The trees arrived by post, a half-open parcel. They were thin and straight, rather like arrows but with shiny leaves at one end and muddy roots at the other. Terry and his father took them down the garden and planted them in their prepared places. Terry had great hopes of the middle tree, now set in the holy spot where Henry, his cat, run over, had been laid to rest a year before. The nine trees made an avenue down one side of the garden, where there was already a fifteen-foot stonewall between the garden and the back yards of the Jenkins Street houses.
“Why do we want a row of trees as well as a wall?” Terry asked his father.
His father said, “For privacy. These trees grow very thickly.”
His father’s love of privacy often puzzled Terry, who was not one to keep himself to himself, but he could see part of the point here. The houses in Jenkins Street were on higher ground. His friend Leslie lived in number twelve, and Leslie had only to stand on a box to see right over the wall.
“Will the trees grow higher than the wall?” Terry asked then.
“Oh yes, twice as high if not more. It’ll take a few years but they'll grow.”
So they were going to have nine trees thirty feet tall, to keep them from being overlooked. Terry wondered why this was so desirable. He said, “Our garden is very pretty. Why can’t we let the people over the wall see it? That wouldn’t be showing off, would it? ”
“No, I don’t think it would be,” his father said. “Yet some people might feel a bit less happy if they can always see a good thing that isn’t theirs. We don’t want to be the cause of any jealousy if we can help it.”
This consideration for other people’s feelings must be a grown-up thing. Terry thought. It was not his idea of how to run things. He said, “These trees—it seems a lot of trouble to go to just to stop people being jealous of us,”
His father looked at him. “It isn’t much trouble, Terry,” he said. “These trees will grow without help from us. They’ll be beautiful. And listen to them. You can already hear them whispering to us in the wind. ”
71. How do we know that Terry’s father was expecting the trees?
A. He thought they would grow tall and thick.
B. He expected them because they arrived by post.
C. He and Terry had dug holes for them.
D. The parcel was half open, so he could see they were trees.

A. Henry had been run over just there
B. a cat was buried there
C. Terry thought it was holy.

A. was proud of his garden and liked showing it off
B. didn’t quite like his neighbors
C. preferred to keep his privacy
D. felt jealous of the people in Jenkins Street
74. Why were the trees planted in front of the wall?
A. Because that was where they would grow faster.
B. To improve the appearance of the house.
C. To hide the ugly sight of Jenkins Street.
D. To stop people from looking inside.
75. According to Terry’s father, the thing that might have made the neighbors feel less happy was .

Dear Mike:
Nice to hear that you will come to Xicheng city this June. To help you get an idea about Xicheng, here I suggest a one-day tour plan around the lake.
You can start the tour with Hupan Hill, which is quite near Wanghu Hotel. From the top of the hill, you can enjoy a bird-view of the Lake. After that, it’s time for you to take a boat trip on the lake. There is a quay on Liu Crossway just below the hill, from where you can take a boat to Huxin Island, which is sure to impress you. After you land on Hubin Quay, you can do some shopping on Fengtan Road, a popular shopping mall not far from your hotel.
If I am of any other help, don’t hesitate to write to me.
Yours
