第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选

                   A

Some people take lots of exercise. Others keep to strict diets. But according to recent research, the best way to live a long and happy life is simple. Get a dog.

“We have known for many years that the company of a pet can increase well-being in a number of ways,” says Dr Bonnie Beaver, an animal behaviour specialist at Texas University. “ For example, the survival rates of heart attack victims with pets are much greater than those of people without pets.

According to Dr Beaver, pet owners are less likely to need a doctor. They recover more quickly when they do get ill. They have lower blood pressure, take more exercise and are more socially active.

Above all, they are happier. Seventy percent of the families Dr Beaver surveyed said that their family environment was more happy after they got a pet. And this is what Dr Beaver and other researchers are trying to achieve. They want to find a scientific link between human happiness and a long life.

There is no final answer to this question yet, but it seems to be something to do with emotional ties. People with someone or something to love live longer. “There are many forms of animal-human relationship and some are very helpful,” says Dr Beaver. It seems that the more lovely an animal is, the more it benefits our health. As the saying goes, “ if you want to be loved, get a dog.”

Pet ownership benefits men and women equally. Other life experiences divide the sexes. “Women are more sensitive to bad marriages than their husbands because they work harder at their relationships,” says Dr Janice Glaser of Ohio State University.

The message seems to be that a woman is better off with a good dog than a bad husband. Yet in some ways, men are similar to dogs. They like getting dirty and making a mess. They forget birthdays. They can disappear for days on end. How can they be better trained?

61. According to the author, the company of a pet does good to a person in the following ways except _________.

A. having less chance of dying of heart attacks

B. being more active in society

C. being better off than others

D. having their family environment improved

62. It can be inferred from the article that _______.

A. a woman may prefer to have the company of a good dog than that of a bad husband

B. scientists are sure about the relationship between happiness and a long life

C. all life experiences have different effect on men and women

D. women can benefit more from owning a pet than men can

63. In what kind of tone do you think the author writes the passage?

A. Realistic and serious. B. Delighted and hopeful.

C. Angry and pitiful. D. Light and humorous.

64. The whole passage is mainly about _______.

A. the relationships between humans and pets

B. pets and a happy life

C. the comparison between bad husbands and pets

D. pets and family life

Your mobile phone rings, and instead of the usual electronic signals, it’s playing your favourite music. A friend sends your favorite song to cheer you up. One day, a record company might forward new records and music videos to your phone.

The mobile business is getting into the music business. For the moment, the interest is in pleasant ring tones, but some companies are hoping to take full advantage of the next generation of mobile phones--- all purpose gadgets(小玩意儿) that blend phone, personal stereo, video player and internet browser into one.

Finally, record companies might send new records and videos to fans who register their cell phone numbers.

The fans could pass music or songs along to friends---- a kind of musical trading card. Unlike Internet tracks, mobile downloads would be easy for record companies to control, said former record industry official Ralph Simon, who is now chairman of Yourmobile, based in Santa Monic, California.

“If you pass a song along to other phones through a network, each phone can be charged,” said Simon. “It’s going through a toll gate(收费站). There’s more possibility for copyright control than there is on the internet.”

Massachusetts-based converse is offering a service in Portugal and the Netherlands that lets people record tunes on their voice mail or send music as presents to friends. Finally, people might be able to sing karaoke and pass them along. The company is sure that people will want to use music to reach out and touch someone.

“A mobile phone is not a listening machine, and you’ll be disappointed if you think you can change it to a radio,” said Ohad Ouziel, a creative manager for Converse in Israel. “But if someone sends you a song while you’re on vacation, you appreciate the feeling.”

65. The underlined word “blend” in the second paragraph most probably means__________.

A. send B. become C. mix D. compare

66. “Massachusetts-based Converse” in the sixth paragraph probably refers to ____________.

A. a person B. a city in Israel C. a state of the USA D. a company

67. Record companies ______ the idea of passing songs and music along mobile phones.

A. are worried about B. are interested in C. try hard to stop D. take no notice of

68. According to Ralph Simon it would be easier to ______ through mobile phone network than through the internet.

A. protect copyright of music works B. send personal messages

C. pass along songs and music D. send voice mail

                C

A large Chinese garment company has offered former US president Bill Clinton US $ 2 million to represent the company as its “image ambassador”(形象大使).

When I came across this information in a newspaper, I was greatly surprised. It reminds me of another report not long ago, when a general election was underway in Israel, some Israelis suggested that Clinton move to Israel to be their new prime minister. Fortunately that was just talk. But the suggestion of the Chinese garment company is not just talk; it has been put formally to Clinton himself. To offer US $ 2 million to a former president to be an ‘image ambassador” is unbelievable. Even Yuan Longping, an agronomist(农学家) who contributes greatly to agriculture in China, was given only 5 million yuan by the government.

First, is it wise to spend so much money on advertising? No one can refuse to say the great function and influence of advertising. But it goes too far. Wouldn’t it be wiser to invest this sum to improve the quality of the company’s products? Microsoft hasn’t needed Bill Clinton to be its “ image ambassador”, while it does need Bill Gates to be its manager.

Second, can the position of a company really be raised to a higher place by having one or two famous persons as “image ambassador”? As the saying goes, borrowed plumage(羽衣) never appears beautiful on one’s own body. Would the company’s “image ambassador” prove to be “ borrowed plumage”?

69.In the author’s opinion, the China company shouldn’t hire Clinton as its “image ambassador” because ____________.

A. it is unwise to spend such large money on advertising

B. the quality of the company’s products is the most important

C. a famous person sometimes has quite an effect on a company

D. he once deeply hurt the feelings of the Chinese people

70. The underlined sentence in the passage probably means ________.

A. though he is a well-known person in the world, he doesn’t suit China’s national conditions

B. one shouldn’t depend on others too much

C. buy clothes yourself, or it won’t fit you

D. the company should strengthen itself by its own effort

71. The main idea of Paragraph 3 is ________.

A. People like spending a lot in advertising instead of improving agriculture

B. considering Yuan Longping’s contributions to the world, it’s unbelievable to offer so much money to Clinton as “image ambassador”

C. the Chinese government paid less attention to the development of agriculture

D. compared with Clinton, the agronomist Yuan Longping is less important

                    D

With a good shopping position and the right amount of money, any educated person ought to be able to make a living out of a bookshop. It is not a difficult trade to learn and the large chain-stores can never force the small bookseller out of existence as they have done to the corner shop. But the hours of work are very long-I was only doing a part-time job, but my boss put in a seventy-hour week, besides regular journeys out of shopping hours to buy books.

The real reason why I should not like to be back in the book trade for life, however, is that while I was in it I lost my love of books. A bookseller cannot always tell the truth about his books, and that gives him a dislike for them. There was a time when I really did love books—loved the sight and smell and feel of them—if they were fifty or more years old, that is. Nothing pleased me quite so much as to buy a bargain lot of them on sale for several pounds. There is a peculiar flavour(独特的味道)about the unexpected books you pick up in that kind of collection: little-known eighteenth-century poets, or out-of-date geography books. For occasional(偶尔的)reading—in your bath, for example, or late at night when you are too tired to go to bed—there is nothing as good as a very old picture story-book.

But as soon as I went to work in the bookshop I stopped buying books. Seen in a mass, five or ten thousand at a time, books were dull and even a little tiresome. Nowadays I do buy one occasionally, but only if it is a book that I want to read and can’t borrow, and I never buy rubbish.

72. According to the passage,     is one of the necessary conditions to run a bookshop.

    A. an educated shop-owner B. a good position at a street corner

    C. a regular journey out of the shop D. the force of large chain-stores

73. The author should not like to be back as a bookseller for life because    .

A. he hated his job of selling books

B. selling books was only a part-time job

C. the books in the shop gave him a dislike

D. he was unable to be honest about the books he sold

74. The books preferred by the author should be those    .

A. stories making readers sleepless B. valuable ones bought on sale

C. peculiar ones with great expectation D. geography ones from the eighteenth century

75. The author will only buy new books    .

    A. if he feels dull and tired B. after he gives up his job as a bookseller

    C. which are interesting but hard to borrow  D. when he throws away old ones

作文:

May I have your attention, please?

I’m Wang Min. Welcome to China. It’s my great honour to be your guide when you visit the Great Wall.

The Great Wall of China, like the pyramids in Egypt, is one of the wonders of the world. It has a history of more than 2000 years. It is over 6000 kilometers long, 6-7 meters high and 4-5 meters wide. Now it’s a place of great interest.

Like pyramids, the Great Wall was built by working people thousands of years ago. The Chinese people and the Egyptian people are both great people in the world, and we are proud of this.

Seeing is believing. I hope you can have a good time on the Great Wall. Thank you for your attention.
