第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,共40分)
阅读下列短文,然后从各题所给的四个选项(A,B,C,D)中,选出最佳选项
( A )
It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don’t understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modern ways, that they are too serious and too strict with their children, and they seldom give their children a free hand.
It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children’s trust and they tend to forget how they themselves felt when young.
For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Older people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.
When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success if you ask before you really start doing it.
Young people often make their parents angry with their choice in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble: it is just that they feel cut off from the older people’s world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That’s why young people want to make a new culture of their own, and if their parents do not like their music or entertainment or clothes or their way of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.
Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say, “ Yes” to what you do. All you want is to be felt alone and do what you like. It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents’ control.
If you plan to control your life, you’d better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.

A. they don’t feel they belong to the world of the older people.
B. they do not want to get into trouble.
C. they feel they are as clever as old people.
D. they want to show they have grown up.

Many large cities in the United States and around the world have an area called Chinatown. Each was set up by people who came from China. For example, Chinatown in San Francisco California, began in the 1840s. Gold had been discovered in California. Chinese immigrants came to America in search of wealth. They lived in an area that later became known as Chinatown. Nearly all the immigrants were men. Their hard work was quickly recognized. In 1850, San Francisco Mayor John Geary held a ceremony saying Chinese efforts improved the city. Today, Chinatown is a leading cultural influence in San Francisco. Many people visit the area.
Chinatowns were also set up in cities in the western states of Oregon and Washington during the middle of the 19th century. Many Chinese in these areas helped build the first railroad across the United States. However, after the work ended in 1869, many Chinese moved to the eastern and middle parts of the United States. The first Chinese arrived in Chicago, Illinois, in the 1870s. Many of them first opened clothes-cleaning businesses and low-cost eating-places. Chicago’s Chinatown has grown over the years.
Chinatowns also can be found in cities outside the United States. For example, the first Chinese in London arrived in the late 18th century. They were men who worked for the East India Company. Later , Chinese operated small stores and eating places that were visited by Chinese sailors traveling through the city. Today, many people visit London’s Chinatown. It has special Chinese Gates and walking areas for visitors. Chinatowns around the world are not only places where Chinese people live and work. They are also places where visitors can learn more about Chinese culture and traditions.

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and more respectable jobs. Personal advisor give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants, but in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability.
While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.
Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.
All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight successes.
Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more womanly and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly" qualities required.
This is true even in politics. "When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently," says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told what the photographs were of. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.
The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.
67. According to the passage, attractive people are those who are ______.
A. good-looking B. humorous
C. well-educated D. capable
68. The author of the passage intended to show us that people' s views on beauty are ______.
A. out-of-date B. practical C. reasonable D. one-sided
69. Which is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Appearance is important in finding a good job.
B. Attractiveness is of great advantage to his or her success.
C. Attractiveness is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women when it comes to politics.
D. Attractiveness has more effect on men than on women.
70. In traditional female jobs, attractiveness ______.
A. strengthens the womanly qualities required
B. always makes it easier for women to succeed quickly
C. makes women look more honest and capable
D. can be a liability

After the violent earthquake that shook Los Angeles in 1994, earthquake scientists had good news to report: The damage and death toll(死亡人数)could have been much worse.
More than 60 people died in this earthquake. By comparison, an earthquake of similar intensity(强度)that shook America in 1988 claimed 25 000 victims.
Injuries and deaths were relatively less in Los Angeles because the quake occurred at 4:31 a.m. on a holiday, when traffic was light on the city’s highways. In addition, changes made to the construction codes in Los Angeles during the last 20 years have strengthened the city’s buildings and highways, making them more resistant to quakes(抗震).
Despite the good news, civil engineers aren’t resting on their successes. Pinned to their drawing boards are blueprints(蓝图)for improved quake-resistant buildings. The new designs should offer even greater security to cities where earthquakes often take place.
In the past, making structures quake-resistant meant firm yet flexible materials, such as steel and wood, which bend without breaking. Later, people tried to lift a building off its foundation, and insert rubber and steel between the building and its foundation to reduce the impact(冲击) of ground vibrations(震动,颤动). The most recent designs give buildings brains as well as concrete and steel supports. Called smart buildings, the structures respond like living organisms to an earthquake’s vibrations. When the ground shakes and the building tips forward, the computer would force the building to shift in the opposite direction.
The mew(鹰笼, 巢, 隐匿处)smart structures could be very expensive to build. However, they would save many lives and would be less likely to be damaged during earthquakes.
71. One reason why the loss of lives in the Log Angeles earthquake was comparatively low is that_______.
A. new computers had been installed in the buildings
B. it occurred in the residential areas rather than on the highways
C. large numbers of Los Angeles residents had gone for a holiday
D. improvements had been made in the construction of buildings and highways
72. The function of the computer mentioned in the passage is to_______.
A. counterbalance(起平衡作用)an earthquake’s action on the building
B. predict(预测)the coming of an earthquake with accuracy
C. help strengthen the foundation of the building
D. measure the impact of an earthquake’s vibrations
73. The smart buildings discussed in the passage________.
A. would cause serious financial problems
B. would be worthwhile though expensive
C. would reduce the complexity of architectural design
D. can reduce the ground vibrations caused by earthquakes
74. It can be inferred from the passage that in minimizing(使……最小)the damage caused by earthquakes, attention should be focused on_______.
A. the increasing use of rubber and steel in capital construction
B. the development of flexible building materials
C. the reduction of the impact of ground vibrations
D. early forecasts of earthquakes
75. The author’s main purpose in writing the passage is to_________.
A. compare the consequences of the earthquakes that occurred in the U.S
B. encourage civil engineers to make more extensive use of computers
C. outline the history of the development of quake-resistant building materials
D. report new developments in constructing quake-resistant buildings

Dear Editor ,
I’m a senior two student. I’m writing to tell you my opinion on whether middle school students can go to school with mobile phones. I think they can do that, because students can stay in touch with their friends and families wherever they are . Besides, the mobile phone is a way to have fun.
However, there are some problems with using mobile phones. The ring of phones can disturb teachers and students in the classroom. Another problem is that some students can spend too much time and money on phone calls and sending messages.
In a word, I suggest students not use phones in the classroom. In addition, as it is expensive, the owner should take good care of it.
Yours sincerely,
Liu Qiang
