She is a cute, quiet girl. As a daughter, she has no secrets from her mother, who is very pleased with her. But recently she has become somewhat mysterious, not so open as before. She has a diary that she keeps under lock and key. Her mother cannot help worrying about her: what if she falls in love, which is too early for a girl of her age. After all she is reaching the “dangerous stage”. These thoughts have caused trouble in the mother’s mind.

One weekend the girl came to tell her mother that she was going to the cinema with her schoolmate and would return late. This was the first time her mother agreed, and she couldn’t help worrying because her daughter had never been away at night before. The mother waited till nine and her uneasiness got the upper hand over her. She decided to go out to meet her daughter. Just at that moment the noise of a car pulling up drew her to the window and – there was her daughter, waving goodbye to a boy. Her heart missed a beat. When the girl came in , the mother was watching TV, pretending nothing had happened. “Mum, I’m back.” “Yeah.” “Sorry to be late. Still sitting up?” “Yes, Oh, that… Who’s that boy?” The daughter was stunned (发愣) for a moment. “Ah. It’s my monitor. He gave a lift on his way home. Mum, I’m going to bed.” “All right. Go to sleep early.”

Next morning when the mother went to the daughter’s room to do some tidying, she found her diary left at her pillow. Many large cities in the United States and around the world have an area called Chinatown. Each was set up by people who came from China. For example, Chinatown in San Francisco California, began in the 1840s. Gold had been discovered in California. Chinese immigrants came to America in search of wealth. They lived in an area that later became known as Chinatown. Nearly all the immigrants were men. Their hard work was quickly recognized. In 1850, San Francisco Mayor John Geary held a ceremony saying Chinese efforts improved the city. Today, Chinatown is a leading cultural influence in San Francisco. Many people visit the area.

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and more respectable jobs. Personal advisor give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants, but in the executive circle, beauty can become a liability.

While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.

Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.

All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight successes.

Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more womanly and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly" qualities required.

This is true even in politics. "When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently," says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, in order of attractiveness. The students were told what the photographs were of. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.

The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

67. According to the passage, attractive people are those who are ______.

    A. good-looking                    B. humorous

    C. well-educated D. capable

68. The author of the passage intended to show us that people' s views on beauty are ______.

    A. out-of-date B. practical C. reasonable D. one-sided

69. Which is TRUE according to the passage?

   A. Appearance is important in finding a good job.

   B. Attractiveness is of great advantage to his or her success.

   C. Attractiveness is more of a disadvantage than an advantage to women when it comes to politics.

   D. Attractiveness has more effect on men than on women.

70. In traditional female jobs, attractiveness ______.

    A. strengthens the womanly qualities required

   B. always makes it easier for women to succeed quickly

   C. makes women look more honest and capable

   D. can be a liability

Living in a city has both advantages and disadvantages. It is often easier to find work. There are always many choices of public transport. Besides, there are a lot of interesting things to do and places to see. You can eat in good restaurants, visit museums, go to cinemas and go to parks whenever you want to relax. However, living in a city is often very expensive. You must find a well-paid job, otherwise, you will not be able to afford the things you will do. What's more, the city is always crowded, noisy and dirty. It is very difficult to find a good place where people can enjoy peace and fresh air as in the countryside.
