One night in February 1962, John H. Glenn. Jr., flew over Australia. The man in the Mercury(水星) capsule(宇宙飞行容器)was alone, but friendly voices reached him by radio. On the dark land 100 miles below, he saw a sprinkling of light. They marked the city of Perth, where people had turned on their lights as a greeting to him.

In Friendship7, Glenn radioed, “ The lights show up very well. Thank for everybody for turning them on.” His capsule raced on to the east.

During his three orbits(轨道)of the earth, Glenn could always reach one of eighteen tracking stations. Some of them were on ship at sea. Others were in the United States.

Many of the stations had been built with the help of other countries. These countries allowed Americans to bring in radio equipment and set it up. Without the help of such lands as Nigeria(尼日利亚), Zanzibar(尚巴西,坦桑尼亚领土的一部分), and Mexico, there would have been breaks in the worldwide radio network.

John H. Glenn. Jr., was the first America to orbit the earth. For his flight, the tracking network(跟踪网络) covered 60,000 route miles. Five hundred men worked in the stations along the route. Waves are beautiful to look at, but they can destroy ships at sea and houses near the shore (海岸). Most waves are caused by winds blowing over the surface of the water. The sun heats the earth, causing the air to rise and the winds to blow. The winds blow across the sea, pushing little waves into bigger and bigger ones.

The size of wave depends on how strong the winds is, how long it blows, and how large the body of water is. In a small bay (海湾) big waves will never build up. But at sea the wind can build up big and strong waves.

A rule says that the height (高度) of a wave (in metres) will usually be no more than one-tenth of the wind's speed (in kilometres). In other words, when the wind is blowing at 120 kilometeres an hour, most waves will be about twelve metres. Of course, some waves may work together to form very big waves that are much higher. In 1933 the United States Navy (海军) reported the largest measured wave in history. It rose in the Pacific Ocean to a height of thirty-four metres.

  A. twelve metres B. one-tenth metres

C. 120 kilometres D. three metres

Probably you have seen photographs of the Grand Canyon(峡谷), the great valley in the desert country of Arizona. But you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty. The Grand Canyon is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.

The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years. Slowly, the river cut down through hard rock. At the same time, the land was rising. Today, the canyon is one and a half kilometres deep and 445 kilometres long. The oldest rocks at the bottom of the canyon are more than 1 billion years old. The width varies from about 200 metres to 29 kilometres across. The rim or top of the canyon is about 2,300 metes above sea level on the South Rim, and about 3,000 metres on the other side, the North Rim. As a result, there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the canyon. The South Rim is a dry desert country. The North Rim has tall forests.

The canyon looks different at different times of day, and in different seasons and weather. At sunrise and sun-set the red ,gold ,brown, and orange colours of the rocks are especially clear and bright. In winter, the canyon is partly covered with snow.

The view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the best. Most visitors come to the South Rim and stay in campgrounds or hotels. Every point along the canyon's edge offers a different view.

The North Rim of the Canyon is quieter. It takes all day to drive there from the South Rim because there is only one bridge across the Colorado River. On the way, you go through Navado Indian lands, and a colorful pink desert called "The Painted Desert".

You can walk down into the Grand Canyon, or you can go down on the back of a mule(小型电动机车). You can also take a boat trip down the Colorado River, and camp on the beaches at night . But whether you see the Grand Canyon from the top or the bottom, it will be an experience that you will never forget.

65. The sea level on both sides of the Grand Canyon is ____.

A. the same B. changing with time C. various D. very low

66. From the passage we can know that the ____ of the canyon is different at different time.

A. length   B. scene C. width D. height

67 If you go to visit the canyon you' d better go to ____.

A. the South Rim B. the North Rim C. the bottom D. the top of a tree

It is natural that young people are often uncomfortable when they are with their parents. They say that their parents don't understand them. They often think that their parents are out of touch with modem ways; that they are too serious and too strict with their children; and that they seldom give their children a free hand.

It is true that parents often find it difficult to win their children's trust and they tend to forget how they themselves felt when young.

For example, young people like to act on the spot without much thinking. It is one of their ways to show that they have grown up and they can face any difficult situation. Older people worry more easily. Most of them plan things ahead, at least in the back of their minds, and do not like their plans to be upset by something unexpected.

When you want your parents to let you do something, you will have better success, if you ask before you really start doing it.

Young people often make their parents angry with their choices in clothes, in entertainment and in music. But they do not mean to cause any trouble—— it is just that they feel cut off from the older people's world, into which they have not yet been accepted. That's why young people want to make a new culture of their own. And if their parents do not like their music or entertainment or clothes or their ways of speech, this will make the young people extremely happy.

Sometimes you are so proud of yourself that you do not want your parents to say "yes" to what you do. All you want is to be left alone and do what you like. It is natural enough, after being a child for so many years, when you were completely under your parents' control.

If you plan to control your life, you'd better win your parents over and try to get them to understand you. If your parents see that you have a high sense of responsibility, they will certainly give you the right to do what you want to do.

68. __________ are to blame for the quarrels between parents and their children, according to this article.

  A. Parents B. Young people

  C. Neither parents nor their children D. Both parents and their children

69. According to the text, young people tend to__________.

  A. ask for advice before they really start to do anything

  B. do things without thinking carefully ahead

  C. be very strict with themselves D. think in the same way as their parents do

70. According to the text , young people want to make a new culture of their own, because ___.

   A. they don't feel they belong to the world of the older people

   B. they do not want to get into trouble

   C. they feel they are cleverer than the older people

   D. they want to show they have grown up

1.改meet为met。与全文的时态不一致。这里叙述的是一个故事,要用过去时。

2.改looked为looking。现在分词短语在句中作伴随状语,表示与主句的谓语动词同时发生的动作。

3.改that为what。that在名词性从句中只起连接词作用,本身无意义,在句中不担任句子成分。what在名词性从句中除起连接词的作用外,本身有意义,同时在从句中担任某一成分。

4.改him为her。Alice是女孩的名字,下文有提示。

5.删去been;take place起不及物动词的作用,不能用于被动语态。

6.此行无错。

7.在youth前加the。

Dear editor,

I’m a middle school student. Today’s the 40th anniversary of Chairman Mao’s inscription” learn from comrade Lei Feng”. Our class held a meeting in memory of it. At the meeting we had a discussion about “should we learn from Lei Feng in the New Period?” some students consider that we re now living in a period of market economy, so the spirit of Lei Feng is no longer useful. Some even think it foolish to help others without any reward. But some think LeiFeng’s is the spirit of our nation, so we should forever follow Lei Feng’s example and do good deeds for the people.

In my opinion, we should not only learn from comrade Lei Feng, but his spirit forward. None of us can do without other’s help or care, and at the same time they also need our help.

 Yours,

Miao Miao
