Sequoyah was a young Cherokee Indian, son of a white trader and an Indian squaw(北美印第安女人). At an early age, he became interested in “the talking leaf”, an expression that he used to describe the white man’s written records. Although many believe this “talking leaf” to be a gift from the Great Spirit, Sequoyah refused to accept that theory. Like other Indians of the period, he was illiterate(文盲的), but his determination to remedy(补救) the situation led to the invention of a unique 86-character alphabet based on the sound patterns that he heard.

His family and friends thought him mad, but while recuperating(恢复) from a hunting accident, he diligently and independently set out to create a form of communication for his own people as well as for other Indians. In 1821, after twelve years of work, he had successfully developed a written language that would enable thousands of Indians to read and write.

Sequoyah’s desire to preserve words and events for later generation has caused him to be remembered among the important inventors. The giant redwood trees of California, called “sequoias(红杉)” in his honor, will further imprint his name in history.

Feeling tired lately? Has the doctor said he can't find anything wrong with you? Perhaps he sent you to a hospital, but all the advanced equipment shows that there is nothing wrong.

Then consider this, you might be in a state of subhealth.

Subhealth, also called the third state or grey state, is explained as an indefinite state between health and disease. According to an investigation by the National Health Organization, over 45 percent of subhealthy people are middle-aged or elderly. The percentage is even higher among people who work in management position as well as students around exams.

Symptoms (症状) include a lack of energy, depression, slow reactions, insomnia (失眠), worrying, and poor memory. Other symptoms include shortness of breath, sweating and aching in the waist and legs.

The key to preventing and recovering from subhealth, according to some medical experts, is to form good living habits, alternate work with rest, exercise regularly, and take part in open air activities.

As for meals, people are advised to eat less salt and sugar. They should eat more fresh vegetables, fruits, and fish because they are rich in nutritional (营养的)elements-vitamins and tiny elements — which are important to the body.

Nutrition experts point out that it is not good to eat too much in one meal. They also say that a balanced diet is very helpful for avoiding subhealth.

Betty and Harold have been married for years. But one thing still puzzles old Harold. How is it that he can leave Betty and her friend Joan sitting on the sofa, talking, go out to a ballgame, come back three and a half hours later, and they’re still sitting on the sofa? Talking?

What in world, Harold wonders, do they have to talk about?

Betty shrugs. Talk? We’re friends.

Researching this matter called friendship, psychologist(心理学家) Lillian Rubin spent two years interviewing more than two hundred women and men. No matter what their age, their job, their sex might be, the results were completely clear: women have more friendships than men, and the difference in the content and the quality of those friendships is “marked and unmistakable”.

More than two-thirds of the single men Rubin interviewed could not name a best friend. Those who could were likely to name a woman. Yet three-quarters of the single women had no problem naming a best friend, and almost always it was a woman. More married men than women named their wife /husband as a best friend, most trusted person, or the one they would turn to in time of emotional distress (感情危机). “Most women, ” says Rubin, “identified (认定) at least one, usually more, trusted friends to whom they could turn in a troubled moment, and they spoke openly about the importance of these relationships in their lives.”

“In general,” writes Rubin in her new book, “women’s friendships with each other rest on shared emotions and support, but men’s relationships are marked by shared activities.” For the most part, Rubin says, interactions (交往) between men are emotionally controlled—a good fit with the social requirements of “manly behavior”.

“Even when a man is said to be a best friend,” Rubin writes, “the two share little about their innermost feelings. While a woman’s closest female friend might be the first to tell her to leave a failing marriage, it wasn’t unusual to hear a man say he didn’t know his friend’s marriage was in serious trouble until he appeared one night asking if he could sleep on the sofa.”

64. What old Harold cannot understand or explain is the fact that ___

Recently, a professor of philosophy in the United States has written a book called Money and the Meaning of Life. He has discovered that how we deal with money in our day-to-day life has more meaning than we usually think. One of the exercises he asked his students to do is to record every penny they spend for a week. From the way they spend their money, they can see what they really value in life.

He says our relation with others often becomes clearly defined when money enters the picture. You might have wonderful friendship with somebody and you think that you are very good friends. But you will know him only when you ask him to lend you some money. If he does, it brings something to the relationship that seems stronger than ever before. Or it can suddenly weaken the relationship if he doesn't. This person may say that he has a certain feeling, but if it not carried out in the money world, there is something less real about it.

Since money is so important to us, we consider those who possess a lot of it to be very important. The author interviewed some millionaires in researching his book.

Question: What is the most surprising thing you have discovered about being rich, because you are a self- made man?

Answer: The most surprising thing is why people give me so much respect. I am nothing. I do not know much. All I am rich.

People just have an idea of making more and more money, but what is it for? How much do I need for any given purposes in my life.'? In his book, the professor tells an important need in modern society: to bring back the idea that money is an instrument rather than the end. Money plays an important role in the material world, but expecting money to give happiness may be missing the meaning of life.

72. According to the first paragraph, people have not realized ________.

  A. how important money is in their day-to-day life

  B. how one spends money shows what is important to him

  C. that money is mare important than their philosophy of life

  D. that their understanding of life is more important than money

73. The author seems to believe that asking your friend to lend you some money _____.

  A. is a good way to test your friendship B. will do harm to your friendship

  C. will strengthen your friendship D. is a good way to break off your friendship

74. What can we learn about the millionaire from his answer in the interview?

  A. He does not feel that he is well educated.

  B. He does not think that he is a very important person.

  C. He doesn' t think that being rich is worth so much attention.

  D. He does not consider himself to be very successful.

75. What does the American professor of philosophy want to explain in his book?

  A. Money is an end. B. Money is a means.

  C. Money is everything. D. Money is unimportant.
