“No man is an island”is a well-known line from John Donne’s Devotion, written more than three hundred years ago. Even now people still agree with him. No one can live a completely isolated life. Without other people, life became empty and sad. We all need to have friends.
For some of us, though making friends is not difficult, feeling sheepish, we may not want to make the first move. It is also difficult at times to keep the friends we already have.
There are many books about friendship, but Dale Carnegie’s How to Win Friends and Influence People, written in 1936, is the most famous. This “how to” book about getting along with other people became a best seller. It was later put into 28 languages.
Dale Carnegie’s advice seems to be simple, but can his advice help you? Do you need to change the way you act? Here is the list of advice from his book:
(1)Be friendly and polite.
Always greet with a smile. Begin with “excuse me ” or “would you please” when you want to ask somebody. Remember to say “thank you” and try to be as helpful as you can.
(2)Go out of your way to be nice.
Find some time to do special things for other people. Making some soup for a sick neighbour may seem like a little thing to you, but it will make your neighbour feel a lot better.
(3)Remember names.
They say that the sweetest music to a person’s ears is the sound of his or her own name.
(4)Be open-minded.
Try to understand other people’s ways and ideas and learn something form them.
(5)Listen patiently.
When someone is talking to you, look at him or her, listen carefully and say something when necessary.

Stepping into a pool of water is common enough, but who could ever imagine stepping into a pool of fish? In February of 1974, Bill Tapp. an Australian farmer. saw a rain of fish that covered his farm. How surprised he must have been when he heard many fish hitting against his roof!
What caused this strange occurrence? This is a question that had long puzzled people who study fish. The answer turned out to be a combination of wind and storm.
When it is spring in the northern part of the world, it is fall in Australia. Throughout the autumn season, terrible storms arise and rains flood the land. The strong winds sweep over Australia like huge vacuum cleaners, collecting seaweed. pieces of wood, and even schools of fish. Strong winds may carry these bits of nature for many miles before vacuum dropping them on fields, houses, and astonished people.
Although they seem unusual. fish-falls occur quite frequently in Australia. When Bill Tapp was asked to describe the scene of fish. he remarked. “They look like millions of dead birds falling down. “ His statement is not surprising. The wonders of the natural world are as common as rain. Nature, with its infinite wonders, can create waterfalls that flow upward and fish that fall out of the sky.

No one knows exactly how many disabled people there are in the world, but estimates suggest the figure is over 450 million. The number of disabled people in India alone is probably more than double the total population of Canada.
In the United Kingdom, about one in ten people have some disability. Disability is not just something that happens to other people:as we get older, many of us will become less mobile, hard of hearing or have failing eyesight.
Disablement can take many forms and occur at any time of life. Some people are born with disabilities. Many others become disabled as they get older. There are many progressive disabling diseases. The longer time goes on,the worse they become. Some people are disabled in accidents. Many others may have a period of disability in the form of a mental illness. All are affected by people’s attitude towards them.
Disabled people face many physical barriers.Next time you go shopping or to work or to visit friends, imagine how you would manage if you could not get up steps, or on to buses and trains. How would you cope if you could not see where you were going or could not hear the traffic? But there are other barriers:prejudice can be even harder to break down and ignorance(无知)inevitably represents by far the greatest barrier of all. It is almost impossible for the able-bodied to fully appreciate what the severely disabled go through,so it is important to draw attention to these barriers and show that it is the individual person and their ability, not their disability, which counts.
53. The key word in Paragraph 4 is__________.
A. disability B, ignorance C. prejudice D. barriers
54. The last word of the passage“ counts” most probably means__________.

We had just got above the clouds over the airport when a calm voice said over the loudspeaker,“For technical reasons we shall be returning immediately to London Airport. Please keep your seatbelts fastened.”
I was rather surprised.I took a look at the old lady next to me.She had been very chatty while we were waiting to take off.

“It’s only a slight emergency,”an airhostess told me with a tense smile. Suddenly there was hitting and striking and we were rushing along the runway at a terrifying speed. The engines roared loudly. We came to a trembling stop. The crew quickly opened the emergency exits and passengers began sliding down huge,stocking-like chutes(滑道)to the ground .A fire engine was already putting out the fire in one engine .I had to shake the old lady hard to wake her up."What’s wrong? Surely the journey isn’t over yet!I mean, have we got to New York?”she asked sleepily.
