Buying insurance is a way in which people can protect themselves against large losses. Protection against fire is one kind of insurance. Large numbers of people pay small sums of money to an insurance company. Although thousands of people have paid for fire insurance, only a few will lose their homes by fire. The insurance company will pay for these homes out of the small sums of money it had collected.
The first modern fire insurance company was formed in London in the 1740s.A great fire had just destroyed most of the city and people wanted protection against further losses. The first company grew rapidly. Some other companies were founded in other areas.
Benjamin Franklin helped form the first fire insurance company in America in 1752,and then a new kind of insurance for farmers was suggested. The new insurance would provide protection against the loss of crops from storms.
Later on another new insurance company was started in America. This company, which offered life insurance, collected small sums of money regularly from many different men. If a man died, his family was given a large sum of money.
Over the years, insurance companies have offered new kinds of insurance protection. The new kinds of insurance cover from such accidents as car to plane crashes. Today, most people have some kind of insurance.

BEIJING(Associated Press) China has a growing middle class, a tradition of expecting education and 21 million new babies every year. Selling educational toys should be easy.
While China may be the world’s biggest toy maker, much of the best is exported. Department stores here do not have enough high quality toys. It is said the demand for educational toys is low.
A US company, BabyCare, is trying to change that with a new way to sell toys in China. BabyCare works basically together with doctors in Beijing hospitals. People who join the company’s “mother’s club” get lectures and newsletters on baby and child development at no extra cost — if they agree to spend 18 dollars a month on the company’s educational toys and childcare books.
“We want to build a seven year relationship with those people,” said Matthew J.Estes, Baby Care’s president.“It starts during pregnancy(怀孕),when the anxiety and needs are highest.” BabyCare works on a one-to-one basis. Doctors, nurses, and teachers — paid by BabyCare—advise parents, explaining toys that are designed for children at each stage of development to age six.
BabyCare opened its first store in China last June in a shopping center in central Beijing and another near Beijing Zoo. It plans to have 80 stores in China within six years.
It is a new model for China and develops a market in young children’s education and health that no other companies are in.

Doctors say anger can be an extremely harmful emotion, unless you learn how to deal with it.They warn that angry feelings can lead to heart disease, stomach problems, headaches, emotional problems and possibly cancer.
Anger is a normal emotion that we all feel from time to time. Some people express anger openly in a calm, reasonable way.Others burst with anger, losing control of themselves. But still other people control their anger. They cannot or will not express it.
For years many doctors thought that controlling one’s anger was more dangerous to a person’s health than expressing it.They said that when a person is angry, the brain lets out the same hormones(荷尔蒙)that are produced during tense situations. They speed the heart rate, raise blood pressure, and narrow the blood vessels. In general, the person feels excited and ready to act.
Doctors said that controlling theses feelings only makes the feelings continue. And this can lead to many medical problems.Doctors thought a person could prevent these problems by letting the anger out by expressing it freely. But recently some doctors held a different view. They said that people who express anger too often and violently did become, in fact, more and not less angry. They said this, too can cause medical problems.
Some doctors say that both controlling and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger strongly may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who deep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Some doctors say that both controlling and expressing anger can be dangerous. They believe that those who express anger strongly may be more likely to develop heart disease, and they believe that those who keep their anger inside may face a greater danger of high blood pressure.
Doctors say the solution is learning how to deal with anger. They say the first step is to admit that you are angry and to recognize the real cause of the anger, then decide if the cause is serious enough to get angry about. If it is, they say, “Do not express your anger while angry.Wait until your anger has cooled down and you are able to express yourself calmly and reasonably.”
49.Controlling one’s anger was considered to be dangerous to his health because of all the following EXCEPT that .
A.the heart rate increases B.the blood pressure rises
C.the situation is becoming tenser D.the blood vessels become narrow
50.Which of the following is the more recent view about the expression of anger?
A.One is likely to suffer from high blood pressure in a fit of great anger.
B.One can avoid his medical problems by expressing his anger freely.
C.One’s heart rate will not change if his anger is kept unexpressed.
D.It is dangerous both to express anger violently and to control one’s anger.
51.When you get angry, which of the following should you do for the sake of health?
A.Controlling your anger and then studying its cause.
B.Letting out your anger freely and then studying its cause.
C.Studying its cause and waiting till it cools down.

When I opened my e-mail the other day, a pretty woman named Rachel appeared on my computer screen. She greeted me by name and started talking with great enthusiasm.Every now and then she stopped to smile at me or blow a kiss. She was reading to me an e-mail from my brother. It was pretty cool.
Rachel was there thanks to a new technology called Facemail.Facemail lets you send an e-mail that gets read to the receiver on line by an attractive male or female or by a clown(小丑).The software, which is free, can be downloaded at www.facemail.com.Facemail faces are lifelike, and they simulate(模仿)emotions based on emotions that you put in your text.Type in: -X, and Rachel blows a kiss.
Life FX, the company that develops the Facemail, is sure there are broad business uses. The reason why e-business is not popular, the company says, is that buying over the Internet lacks the human touch. But what if you went to the Nike website and Michael Jordan greeted you by name, waited on you and personally closed the sale? And it is talking with Whirpool Company about using the technology in a computer screen on a fridge. Then if Mom can’t be home when the kids get back from school, she can leave a note with voice and image telling them what there is to eat.
Facemail could get hot fast.Personally, I’m a fan.Facemail is lively and funny at first, but if you select the clown, put a few rude words in an e-mail and add some angry emotions, you’ve got a crazy mail.
53.The main advantage of Facemail is that ________.
A.you can hire a beautiful woman to read the e-mail to you
B.you can see the person who sends you the e-mail
C.you can put your own emotions in the e-mail as you like

54.We can infer from the passage that Facemail _______.

55.The writer mentioned Nike website and Michael Jordan to show that ______.
A.famous people like Michael Jordan also like to use Facemail
B.Facemail can make shopping on the Internet more interesting
C.Nike company is increasing its sales through the fame of Jordan
D.Michael Jordan will serve you himself on Nike website
56.The writer thinks _______.
A.Facemail needs further improvement
B.Facemail is cool and funny
C.Facemail is a danger to the Internet
D.people should be careful with Facemail

You might not know it, but there is something wonderful at your fingertips. You can make people happier, healthier and more hard-working just by touching their arms or holding their hands.
Doctors say that body touch is a kind of medicine that can work wonders. When people are touched, the quantity of hemoglobin----a type of matter that produces the red color in blood--increases greatly. This results in more oxygen reaching every part of the body and the whole body benefits. In experiments, bottle-fed baby monkeys were separated from their mothers for the first ten days of life. They became sad and inactive. Studies showed the monkeys were more probable to become ill than other babies that were allowed to stay with their mothers.
Human babies react in much the same way. Some years ago, a scientist noticed that some well-fed babies in a clean nursery became weak. Yet babies in another nursery were growing healthily, even though they ate less well and were not kept as clean. The reason, he concluded, was that they often had touches from nurses.
Experiments show that most people like being touched. And nearly all doctors believe touch helps to reduce patients’ fear of treatment. Of course there is time when a touch is not welcome. But even if we don't like being touched, a smile can make us feel better. Smiling increases blood flow and starts the production of "happy brain" chemicals.
So let's have a big smile and don't forget to keep "in touch".
57. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. Everyone knows that body contact can make people happier.

58. According to the passage, _________.
A. human brains need oxygen and blood supply now and then
B. touches from doctors and nurses have nothing to do with treatment
C. new-born baby monkeys should stay away from their mothers
D. not all people like being touched
59. The underlined word "benefits” in the second paragraph probably means"_____”
A. becomes useful or helpful B. gets something useful or helpful
C. falls ill D. gets hurt
60. What would be the best title for the passage?
