Light travels very fast. It moves at 300,000 kilometers a second. Light reaches us from the moon in less than a second and a half. The moon is about 382,000 kilometers away from us.
Light from the sun reaches us in 8.5 minutes. The sun is about 149,640,000 kilometers from the earth.
The other stars are farther away than the sun. Light from the nearest of the other stars reaches us about four years. Light from some stars takes hundreds of years to reach us. So when we look at a star, we do not see its present condition. We see it as it was long ago; perhaps hundreds or thousands of years ago.
The sun is in a great group of stars. There are about 100,000,000 stars in the group. We call this group the galaxy(星系;银河). Outside the galaxy there is empty space; but thousands of millions of kilometers away there is another galaxy. Light from other galaxy reaches us after about 2 million years. There are millions of these galaxies; and they appear to be rushing farther and farther away from us. The astronomers at Mount Palomar and Mount Wilson and other observatories(天文台,气象站)can see some of them well; but they can’t see one as it is now. The light takes millions of years to arrive here. It traveled across space and then went into an astronomer’s telescope. Perhaps no men were living when it started out.

Matter exists in one of three states: solid, liquid or gaseous(气体的). Air is in the gaseous state. It is not in the solid or liquid state. Solids are rigid(固定的) and have definite(确定的) form while air is a colourless, tasteless, invisible gas, in fact a mixture of gases, which surrounds the planet earth. It is everywhere on the planet. An “empty”drinking glass and an “empty” room, to give two examples, are not really empty. Each is filled with air. When the glass is filled with water, the water pushes the air out of the glass.
Air, as a gas, has no definite shape, but because it is a kind of matter which diffuses(扩散), it takes up space. It is easy to prove that air is something that takes up space. Stuff(填充,塞住) a dry handkerchief into the bottom of glass so that it will not fall out when the glass is turned upside down. Push the upside-down glass, holding straight up and down, into a jar of water till the glass is completely covered. When the glass is taken out of the water, the handkerchief will be dry. The air inside the glass took up space and kept the water from coming in.
41. According to the text, we know that matter exists in ____ states.
A. one or two B. two C. three D. four or more
42. From the passage we can infer ____.
A. water is rigid and flows
B. coal is rigid and takes the shape of the container
C. oxygen is a gas which has a definite form
D. steam diffuses and has its weight
43. The passage tells us that ____.
A. all the containers are filled with air B. an invisible gas is a mixture
C. air fills the container D. all of the gases are tasteless
44. When you perform the experiment to prove that air takes up space, you should first ____.
A. press a handkerchief tightly into the bottom of a glass
B. dip a handkerchief carefully into a glass
C. tie a handkerchief firmly in a glass
D. blow a handkerchief quickly into the bottom of a glass
45. Which of the following pictures gives us the correct result? (W—water A—air; H—handkerchief)

Every successful independence movement needs a leader. The leader of the Indian independence movement was Mohandas Gandhi(莫罕达斯·甘地). He was born into a Hindu family. As a young man, Gandhi studied law in London. The Hindu leaders had threatened to punish him. But he went to London anyhow.
Gandhi believed in fighting without weapons or force. He called his method non-violence. He would simply disobey any unfair law or policy. He was willing to be punished for his actions. Gandhi thought that the law would be changed if enough people protested(抗议,声明反对) in this way. It would show how strongly the people felt about his beliefs.
Gandhi wanted all Indians to understand the independence movement. He walked barefoot through the villages, speaking to all people. Many people loved and understood Gandhi. His movement grew. The British flag came down in 1947.
The Indian people honored Gandhi with the title Mahatma(圣雄,圣贤), which means “Great soul”. Gandhi was an unusual kind of leader. He vowed(发誓) never to make money for himself. Last term I took part in a geography research study group. Our topic was environmental pollution and protection. We took a variety of pictures showing the present pollution conditions of our city. To our surprise, there are still a lot of people doing silly things to our surroundings. Some people throw rubbish anywhere they like, some cars give off harmful gases, and waste water is poured into the rivers by some factories. Worse still people sometimes have to make their way through dusty winds as a result of the pollution. Through our research, we come to know that everybody must pay much attention to our environment and some measures should be taken to protect it. (97 words)
