In the 19th century Americans from the eastern states moved out west to settle in the rich new lands along the Pacific Coast. The most difficult part of their trip was crossing the “Great American Desert” in the western part of the United States by horse and wagon.

The western desert can be very dangerous. There is little water and there are few trees. But the desert also has scenery of great beauty. Tall towers of red and yellow stone rise sharply from the flat, sandy valley floor. The scene has been photographed many times and appears in movies and on TV.

In Arizona, man-made dams across the Colorado River have made two large lakes in the middle of the dry desert country. At Lake Powell, the red stone arch(拱) of Rainbow Bridge rises high above the blue lake.

There are few roads. Many areas of Lake Powell’s shore can only be reached by boat or on foot. But hikers(徒步旅行者) in this empty desert land sometimes find very old native American pictures, painted on the rocks.

In Death Valley, California, the summer temperature rises to 130-165 degrees Fahrenheit. There is less than two inches of rain each year. Death Valley is the lowest place in America-925 meters below sea level. In the 1800s, many travelers died when they tried to cross this waterless valley in the terrible heat.

Although the desert is dry and seems empty, there is plenty of life if you look closely. Small insects, snakes, and rats have learned how to live in the desert heat. They live underground and come out at night, when it is cool. Plants such as cactus(仙人掌) need very little water. When it does rain in the desert (sometimes only once or twice a year), plants grow quickly, and flowers open in a single day. For a short time, the desert is covered with brilliant colour.

58. In the 19th century. Americans moved from the east to the west because they ______.

  A. enjoy the trip B. wanted to make their home there

  C. wanted to find new grass land there D. had no water to drink

59. From passage we can conclude that ______.

  A. the western desert is a good place for people to live in

  B. there is little water but there are many trees in the desert

  C. the desert is dangerous but it is full of beauty

  D. till now, people know little about the desert

60. If you want to find some old native American pictures painted on the rock you must travel ______.

A. on foot B. by boat C. by car D. by plane

61. In the 1800s, many travelers died in Death Valley because of ______.

A. illness B. high temperature C. cold weather D. poisonous water

62. In the desert, animals will die _______.

A. if they move about B. if they can’t make holes underground

C. if they come out at night D. if they drink much water

D

Long before there wasn’t any Washington or any United States, while there were trader Indians on the shores of the river that flows by the place where the present Washington D. C. stands. These Indians paddled canoes(独木舟) up and down the river and traded with other Indians, swapping things they had for things they wanted—beads for furs, bows for arrows, corn for potatoes. In the Indian language the name for traders was Potomac, so now we call the river the Potomac River after these trader Indians. The Potomac separates two states—Maryland and Virginia. They are named after two English queens—Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth I who never married and was called the Virgin Queen. The Potomac Indians paddled their canoes down the river until they came to a much broader body of water. This body of water was so big that it seemed to them like the ocean, and they called it “the Mother of Waters”, which in their own language was “Chesapeake”. Though Chesapeake Bay is not the ocean, it is the biggest bay in the United States.

There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great invention was one that is still very important today—the wheel(轮子). This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel long distances.

For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that have as much effect as the wheel. Then in the early 1800s the world started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People didn’t have to explore much any more. They began to work instead to make life better.

In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera, the electric light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today.

The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions: the helicopter(直升飞机) in 1909, sound movies in 1926, the computer in 1928 and jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was first made. Nylon(尼龙) came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear.

The middle part of the 20th century brought new ways to help people get over diseases. They worked very well. They made people healthier and let them live long lives. By the 1960s most people could expect to live to be at least 60.

By this time most people had a very good life. Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man now had a desire(渴望) to explore again. The world is known to man but the stars are not yet. Man began looking for ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. Since then other countries, including(包括) China and Japan, have made their steps into space.

In 1969 man took his biggest step away from the earth. Americans first walked on the moon. This is certainly just a beginning though. New inventions will someday allow us to do things we have never yet dreamed of.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Welcome to our school. I'm very glad to have the honor to tell you some activities you are going to have this morning. Our headmaster will meet you and tell you something about the history of our school. After that you will be shown around our lab building, library, sound lab and school factory. And then you will join the boys and girls in their English Corner. Some of them would like to invite you to their homes at noon. There you will meet their parents and have a family dinner with them I hope you will enjoy your short stay here. That's all. Thank you.
