Zoe was just two weeks old when she was spotted wandering in a village market near Kenya’s Tsavo National Park in December 1995. Zoe’s mother had died and the baby was left alone. So she was trucked to a most unusual orphanage in Nairobi, run by a woman named Daphne Sheldrick.

Daphne’s husband, David Sheldrick, founded Tsavo National Park. Daphne has been working with wild animals for some 60 years, and in 1977 she opened the elephant orphanage at her home in Nairobi. As of 1997, the orphanage, which depends on private contributions, has saved more than 100 babies.

Zoe was rather healthy when she was found, and once under the care of the orphanage she was very happy. After a year in the orphanage with the constant companionship of her human family, Zoe was taken to a refuge at Tsavo National Park. There her keepers have gradually introduced her to the ways of the wild, helping her to find food and water. Zoe lives together with other elephant youngsters in a protected area. It may take some years, but the final aim is to allow all of them to go to a wild herd.

Daphne said that her dream for the future is to see ivory(象牙) banned, all stored ivory destroyed and no one wearing an ivory ornament ever again. “There will always be competition for land,” she explained, “but we can protect elephants in the parks and give the young a chance.”

56. Zoe was trucked to an elephant orphanage because __________.

59. According to the passage, Daphne would like to __________.

A. set up as many orphanages as possible

B. make elephants live in their own groups

C. sell ivory for maintaining the orphanage

D. send Zoe to a zoo in America or in Europe

                  B

Whether the hair is long or short, it must be brushed and regularly washed. For greasy hair, especially if the owner lives in a town, it may be necessary to wash the head every four or five days. Those with a dry hair can usually go a little longer, but this is a matter for the individual to decide.

If a woman is not able to go to the hairdresser’s very often, it is important that she choose a style she can easily manage for herself, and this nearly always means that the first cut must be very standard. The same applies to permanent waving(电烫). Ideally this should be carried out three or four times a year, so that the hair never gets out of hand.

One thing should be remembered though, that is, whatever you apply to the head can have some effect upon the skin and therefore anything strong should be used with care. Or you may use softer products. As for style, this must be studied according to what is the latest fashion and also to suit the individual at different times of her life.

Young people who have spots or skin troubles on their faces, should take particular care to make sure that the hair is both clean and does not come into contact with the affected piece of skin. Hair is very difficult to keep completely clean and therefore anyone running their hands through their hair and afterwards touching their faces, or letting their hair fall over their faces, might spread infection(感染) from one place to another. Good hair does a lot to the effect of a face, so if you want to look delightful, please start with your hair.

60. The passage tells us that the most basic thing to do in hair care is to _______.

A. keep the hair away from the skin B. go to hairdresser’s very often

C. wash and brush the hair regularly D. choose softer products for the hair

61. The sentence “Those with a dry hair can usually go a little longer” means if your hair is dry, __________.

A. your hair can grow longer       B. you can use strong products

C. your hair is not long enough D. you don’t have to wash it often

62. The best hair style can be achieved by __________.

A. not combing the hair with hand

B. not applying anything strong to the head

C. having the head washed every day

D. following the latest fashion to suit one’s age

63. To prevent the hair from infecting the skin, we’d better __________.

A. wash the hair as often we can

B. keep the hair completely clean

C. have hair cut four times a year

D. avoid combing the hair with hand

                   C

The House Committee on Pollution(HCP) held a special meeting last night to discuss the Albanian cans. A difficult situation arose last week after the Albanians had refused to allow an international environmental organization to test cans of industrial waste that they were throwing into the Sea of Japan. It was thought that the cans may have contained nuclear waste, even though the Albanians have strongly denied this.

Six crew members from the Greenpeace ship “Tiger 2”, which is still closely monitoring the Albanian ship, secretly went aboard at night and took away one of the waste cans. The first test results of the waste in the can suggest nuclear waste rather than other industrial waste according to a report from the Japan laboratory where the tests are being carried out. Further tests are necessary to determine the exact level of nuclear content.

The Greenpeace action has annoyed the Albanians but the Foreign Secretary here has insisted that the Albanian ship leave the Sea of Japan and return home immediately. The Albanians, not surprisingly, have refused to do so, and demanded that “Tiger 2” be called off from watching them.

The International Community is suggesting that the Albanian ship be properly searched and are saying that it is very important and necessary that no more cans are thrown until the truth of this matter is made clear. Obviously, the Japanese government is particularly anxious to discover exactly what is being thrown so close to their northern islands, possibly polluting their fishing industry and putting people’s lives in danger. The International Community is to meet with the Albanian government tomorrow for the third time in a week.

66. The underlined word “monitoring” in the 2nd paragraph means __________.

Some English words are made up of the same part and have different beginnings and different endings, such as import, export, report and transport. All these words, you can see, have the same root “ port”, which comes from the Latin word, meaning “ to carry” or “ to move” from one place to another. And according to the bit at the beginning --- which we call the prefix ( 前缀 ) --- the meaning changes: “ import” means “ to carry in”, or “ to bring into a country”; “ export”, “ex” means “ out of”, so this word means “ to carry out of a country”; “ re” means “back”, so the word “report” means “to tell somebody, to bring back information to somebody”; “transport”, “trans” means “across” and it means “to carry across one place to another”.

Let’s look at the following words: supporter, reporter, importer and exporter. You can see that in this case these words are nouns which are made up of the verbs plus a suffix, thus meaning a person who completes the verb. So supporter means somebody who supports. A reporter is somebody who reports. Importer is somebody who imports and exporter is somebody who exports and so on.

72. “ Some English words are made up the same part ...”, in the sentence “part” means ______.

A.    different beginnings and different endings.

B.    the same part which has several meanings

C.    the root of a word

D. the same root which has different meanings

73. Which of the following is not true?

A.    Apart from “port”, most English words have the same root which comes from the Latin word.

B.    “Port” is the root forming some English words.

C.    The root “ port” means “ to carry”

D. “ Port” has the root meaning “ to move” from one place to another.

74. By adding a prefix or a suffix to a root, we can get a word which has _______.

  A. the meaning of a Latin word        B. a different meaning

  C. the meanings of “in” or “out of” D. a lot of meanings

75. According to the passage, if we talk about a repairman, you know that he must

  be ________.

  A. somebody who has regained (恢复) health. B. a person who can repair something

  C. somebody who has good health D. a person who can do only simple things.

W: It’s five to eight. I am afraid we can’t get to the airport on time. He’s probably looking for us right now.

M: Let’s stand by the side of the road for a few minutes. Maybe somebody will stop and pick us up.

W:Uh, who was on it?

M:I don’t know how many. There’s like Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon. Who else?

W:I don’t know, but it’s definitely the only movie of its kind.

M:Do you know what the story is?

W:I think they’re in Vegas, and a crowd of good—looking young men who are…Are they trying to rob a bank?

M:I think they’re trying to rob a jewelry store. That’s what he was talking about last night, but I, I wasn’t really paying attention so I didn’t understand.

M:Some young teachers from the department and three of you American students. That way you can practice your Chinese, too.

W:That’s a great idea. What can I bring?

M:Let’s see. I’ll prepare everything Chinese, and…

W:Why don’t I make a potato salad? Also, I’ll be seeing Bob and Jane tomorrow. Do you want me to tell them to show up?

M:Well, I should let them know about the party, so they won’t plan anything else.

W:Right. When would you like us to come?

W:Thanks for picking me up this evening, Ted.

M:No problem, Mom. I’m happy to do it. By the way, I had some friends over after school today and we drank all the milk. Shall we stop at the supermarket on the way home to get some?

W:I think it’s closed by this time of night. But we can stop at the convenience store. They’re open 24 hours.

M:Here we are. But I don’t think I’ve ever been here before. Let’s go in.

W:I don’t come here often because the prices here are higher.

M:There isn’t much selection, but that makes choosing easier.

W:Does it? I enjoy comparing so I can get the best bargain for our family. Of course, this time we don’t have much choice, do we?

M:No, I guess not. This is probably the only place open at this time of the night Look at this, Mom. They have hamburgers ready made. All you have to do is to heat it by microwave for thirty seconds.

W:I know that, Ted, but they cost more. You’d better go over to have a look at the magazines. It’ll take your mind off food. I’ll take them to the cash counter.

Good morning. I am Professor Armstrong, and I am your laboratory instructor. This class is intended as a necessary part of the course, which Dr Smith will be in charge of. This class will meet twice a week. This laboratory begins at nine. I expect you to be on time. I do not intend to wait for the latecomers or repeat what has already been covered if you miss the explanation. And do not arrive late and interrupt your neighbor. You may as well not come if you can’t be on time.

Attendance is equally important. If you miss three lab classes, you’re dropped from the labs-no excuses. You can’t complete the course without completing the lab.

Besides, safety is key here. It’s very important to keep things neat and clean, dress properly, and be careful. You may not eat, drink or smoke in the laboratory and you should always clean the counter and wash your hands both before and after the class. Long hair must be tied back. Large clothing must not be worn. Any laboratory accident must be reported immediately.

I hope you’ll enjoy the laboratory. It’s a wonderful place, and all the requirements I’ve just mentioned are to be followed. We will begin today by learning about the microscope.

Haven’t been able to write to you for a long time. I wonder how you are getting on recently. As you know, the winter holidays in China are coming. And the students in our school are going to have a winter camp. Would you please have the pleasure to come and join us? The winter camp is going to be held in the Zhijiang Holiday Village from July 5th to July 15th. In the winter camp, we are going to pay a visit to the places of interest in Hangzhou. And we are going to have talks on the study of languages and have parties as well.

Oh, I’m sorry I have to stop here now. Would you please write to tell me whether you can come and when if you can.

    Best wishes.
