Sometime in the next century, the familiar early-morning newspaper on the front porch(走廊) will disappear. And instead of reading your newspaper , it will read to you. You will get up and turn on the computer newspaper just like switching on the TV. An electronic voice will distribute (散布) stories about the latest events, guided by a program that selects the type of news you want. You’ll even get to choose the kind of voice you want to hear. Want more information on the brief story? A simple touch makes the entire text appear. Save it in your own personal computer file if you like. These are among the predictions (预言) from communications experts working on the newspapers of the future. Pictured as part of broader home-based media and entertainment systems, computer newspa-
pers would unite print and broadcast reporting , offering news and analysis with video(视频)images of news events.
Most of the technology is available now, but convincing(使…明白) more people that they don’t need paper to read a newspaper is the next step. But resistance(抵抗) to computer newspapers may be stronger from within journalis-
m(新闻界). Since it is such a cultural change, it may be that the present generat-
ion realizes that the newspaper industry is no longer a newspaper industry. Technology is making the end of traditional newspapers unavailable.
Despite technological advances, it could take decades(十年)to replace newsprint with computer screens. It might take 30 to 40 years to complete the changeover because newspapers have established(建立)financial interests in the paper industry.

What makes a person scientist? Does he have ways or tools of learning that are different from those of others? The answer is “no”. It is not the tools a scientist uses but how he uses these tools that makes him a scientist. You will probably agree that knowing how to use a power is important to a carpenter (木匠). You will probably agree, too, that knowing how to investigate(调查),how to discover information, is important to everyone. The scientist, however, goes one step future, he must be sure that he has a reasonable answer to his questions and that his answer can be confirmed (确认) by other persons. He also works to fit the answers he gets to many questions into a large set of ideas about how the world works.
The scientist’s knowledge must be exact. There is no room for half right or right just half the time. He must be as nearly right as the conditions permit. What works under one set of conditions at one time must work under the same conditions at other times. If the conditions are different, any changes the scientist
observes in a demonstration (演示) must be explained by the changes in the conditions. This is one reason that investigations are important in science. Albert Einstein, who developed the theory of relativity, arrived at this theory through mathematics was later tested through investigations. The accuracy(准确)of his mathematics was later tested through investigations. Einstein’s ideas were shown to be correct. A scientist uses many tools for measurements. Then the measurements are used to make mathematical calculations (计算) that may test his investigations.
1. What makes a scientist according to the passage?
 A. The tools he used B. His ways of learning
 C. The way he uses his tools D. The various tools he uses
2. “The scientist, however, goes one step further,…”the writer says this to show
 A. the importance of information B. the importance of thinking
 C. the difference between scientists and ordinary people
 D. the difference between carpenters and people with other jobs.
3. A sound (可靠的) scientific theory should be one that___
A. does not only work under one set of conditions at one time, but also works under the same conditions at other times
B. leaves no room for improvement
C. does not allow any change even under different conditions
D. can be used for many purposes
5. What is the main idea of the passage?
