A few months ago, millions of people in London heard alarms all over the town. The emergency services, the Fire Departments, the Police, hospitals, and ambulances stood by, ready to go into action. In railway underground stations, people read notices and maps which told them where to go and what to do in the emergency. This was Exercise Flood Call, to prepare people for a flood emergency. London wasn't flooded yet, but it is possible that it would be. In 1236 and in 1663, London was badly flooded. In 1928, people living in Westminster, the heart of London, drowned in floods. And in 1953, one hundred people, living on the eastern edge of the London suburbs were killed, again, in the floods. At last, Greater London Council took actions to prevent this disaster from happening again. Though a flood wall was built in the 1960s, Londoners still must be prepared for the possible disaster. If it happens, 50 underground stations will be under water. Electricity, gas and phone services will be out of action. Roads will be drowned. It will be impossible to cross any of the bridges between north and south London. Imagine: London will look like the famous Italian city, Venice. But this Exercise Flood Call didn't cause panic among Londoners. Most people knew it was just a warning. One lady said, "It's a flood warning, isn't it? The water doesn't look high to me."

Allan Raymond Miller took an interest in toys and turned it into a museum. But it’s not just his toys that are on display among the 100,000 items he’s collected. Chances are that you’ll find something from your childhood, too. Its collections are in people’ s memories. People tend to forget their day-to-day troubles here.

“ I think this is every collector’s dream to put it out there and share it with the public,” said Miller,a former chemistry teacher.

Bill and Maria Spencer and their three children were traveling from Texas to their home in Williamstown,N.J.,last summer when they spotted a sign along Interstate(州际公路) 70 advertising the museum. Their youngest son liked the trains, but the parents were just as pleased to find toys from their youth when they stopped there last summer. Bill showed the kids how “ Rock’Em,Sock’Em Robots” works, while Maria laughed when seeing the Maria and Donny Osmond dolls she had as a girl.

“ It’s important for our kids to see what we had as kids,” Bill said.

A large part of the museum’s collection is devoted to model trains, mostly Lionel, which Miller and his father started collecting in the mid-1970s. One of the oldest and most precious of his toys is a wind-up(上发条的)metal Tut-Tut toy, produced between 1893and 1910 by Lehmann,a German toy maker. Much of the collection is made up of toys produced by Louis Marx, such as the “ Rock’Em,Sock’ Em Robots.” Between the 1940s and 1960s,Marx Toys Co. was the largest toy maker in the United Sates.

Toy museum like Miller’s are important to the history of American culture. There is an opportunity to appreciate the toy as an art piece,a piece of design and a piece of play.

 A. American politics B .American education  C .American culture D .American technology

65. According to the passage,in order to make the toy museum known,Miller ______.

By 1990,according to a World Wildlife Fund(WWF)report, only about 4,500 tigers survived throughout the world --- half of them in India. Mr. Foresters, who followed and counted tiger footprints, estimated(估计)that in May 1992 only about 1,800 tigers existed in India. Project Tiger supported by WWF was immediately launched. Nine tiger reserves were created, with armed guards protecting them.

The project provided opportunities for researchers from India and abroad to study tigers in the reserves and gather unavailable information about their habits. Studies show that a male tiger may control a hunting territory(地盘)of between 10 and 20 sq. kms, depending on its age, size, and strength.

The territory of a male includes the smaller territories of three or four tigresses. A tiger marks the boundaries of its by spraying urine(尿)and other bodily liquids. But it tries to avoid territory fights, guided by the body smell of other tigers. Tigers fights to death only when a tigress is defending her young,or when a tiger is guarding a tigress from the attention of other males.

The popular image of the tiger is that of a cruel and undefeatable hunter. But studies show that it catches only one of 20 victims it tries to attack.

Fears have recently developed that Project Tiger has been too successful. It has enabled the tiger population to double but India’s human population has also grown out of control. The land problem is becoming serious and many rural people feel angry about the fact that some rich forests are kept for tigers. A growing number of attacks by tigers on man have added to the hostility(敌意).

68. The aim of Project Tiger is to______.

  A. study the growth rate of tigers B. improve the breeding of young tigers

  C. protect tigers from being killed D. analyze the behavior of tigers

69. Studies have shown that_______.

  A. a tigress never attacks until attacked B. the tigress is not as fierce as the tiger

  C. a tiger usually fights with another tiger to defend its own territory.

  D. the tiger is not as a good hunter as is commonly described

70. Some people are afraid that Project Tiger_______.

  A. has been carried out too far        B. has failed to achieved its goal

  C. hasn’t received enough attention     D. is not worth the money spent on it

71. The author seems________.

  A. to be excited about Project Tiger.

  B. to have a matter-of-fact attitude towards Project Tiger

  C. to have an unfriendly attitude towards Project Tiger

  D. to be satisfied with Project Tiger

As we know, when senior students graduate from school, most of their textbooks are thrown away, which are still in good condition. What a great waste it is!

A suggestion has been put forward that we should recycle the textbooks. I quite agree to the suggestion. For one thing, recycling textbooks can save a lot of natural resources, which are used to make textbooks. For another thing, senior students may have made plenty of useful notes on the pages. They are very helpful to those textbook users. Besides, in Australia and some other countries, recycling textbooks is popular.

So I am for the suggestion.
