As the only physician in a small local clinic and hospital, Katrina Poe sees dozens of patients on any given day. She’s on call at the hospital in Kilmichael every day, and she gets little time with her sons, aged 3 and 3 months. But the country doctor doesn’t complain about her job. It’s the one she chose for herself 25 years ago while she was a fifth-grader in Kilmicahael.
The daughter of two workers in a town that had produced only two other doctors, Poe might not have been expected to go to college at all, let alone medical school. But it was a challenge at first, being the town’s first female and first black doctor. She even had patients who refused to see her at first. But a lot of those patients who were unwilling in the beginning are now some of her most favorite patients and have accepted her, finally. Many patients, in fact, now refuse to seek health care elsewhere.
Though she’s working at least 80 hours a week, Poe is sorry that she sometimes has to turn patients away. “I just can’t see everybody,” she says. “I’m seeing patients after hours, so it’s just very busy.”
In addition to her work at the hospital and clinic, Poe cares for all residents of the local nursing home and the local mental health facility during monthly visits. “This town and the little hospital are fortunate to have her,” says Calvin Johnson, Poe’s husband. He says it is without a doubt “the love and support of the people” that make living in Kilmichael worthwhile for the family.
In recognition of her services to rural medicine, the Texas-based physician staffing firm Staff Care Inc. named Poe, 35, the “2005 Country Doctor of the Year.”
56.Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.Poe is too busy to spare time for her family.

C.There are three doctors in Poe’s family.
D.Poe’s husband takes pride in her.
57.When Katrina Poe began her work at the beginning, it was difficult because __________.
A.she was not accepted by the local people
B.she was poor in medical skills
C.there were few patients in the town
D.the town had other good hospitals
58.What would be the best title for the passage?
A.The Only Physician in A Town
B.A Black Doctor Popular with Patients
C.A Hard-working Doctor in a Town
D.Doctors in Great Need in Kilmichael

Happy birthday! Do birthdays really make people happy? Of course they do. Birthdays celebrate the day we were born. Besides, that extra candle on the cake suggests another year of growth and maturity(成熟)-or so we hope. We all like to imagine that we’re getting wiser and not just older. Most of us enjoy seeing the miracle(奇迹) of growth in others, as well. For instance, seeing our children develop and learn new things makes us feel proud. For Americans, like people in most cultures, growing up is a wonderful process(过程). But growing old? That’s a different story.
Growing old is not exactly pleasant for people in youth-oriented(以年轻人为中心) American culture. Most Americans like to look young, act young and feel young. As the old saying goes, “You’re as young as you feel.” Older people joke about how many years young they are, rather than how many years old. People in some countries value the aged as a source of experience and wisdom. But Americans seem to favor those that are young, or at least “young at heart.”
Many older Americans find the “golden years” to be anything but golden. Economically, “senior citizens” often struggle just to get by. Retirement(退休) at age 65 brings a sharp decrease in personal income. Social security(安全) benefits usually cannot make up the difference. Older people may suffer from poor nutrition(营养), medical care and housing. Some even experience age discrimination. In 1987, American sociologist Pat Moore dressed up like an older person and wandered city streets. She was often treated rudely-even cheated and robbed. However, dressed as a young person, she received much more respect.
Unfortunately, the elderly population in America is increasing fast. Why? People are living longer. Fewer babies are being born. And middle-aged “baby boomers” are rapidly entering the groups of the elderly. America may soon be a place where wrinkles(皱纹) are “in”. Marketing experts are already noticing this growing group of consumers.
59.Growing up is a wonderful thing because ___________.
A.people can celebrate their birthdays
B.people can become more mature and wiser
C.people can receive many presents
D.people will feel younger at heart
60.We can infer from the second paragraph that ___________.
A.young people lack experience and wisdom
B.American older people often joke about their old age
C.American culture is very young
D.different countries have different opinions on the old age
61.The underlined sentence (in Paragraph 3) means “_______.”
A.The golden years can make the old earn lots of money and receive good medical care
B.The old people in America are leading a hard life without good nutrition, medical care or
housing
C.The old in America have to retire at the age of 65
D.American social security benefits are not good
62.From the last paragraph we know that the underlined word “in” can be replaced by ________.
A.serious B.bad
C.disappearing slowly D.growing fast
C
What should you think about when trying to find your career? You are probably better at some school subjects than others. These may show strengths that you can use in your work. A boy who is good at mathematics can use that in an engineering career. A girl who spells well and likes English may be good at office work. So it is important to know the subjects you do well in at school. On the other hand, you may not have any specially strong subjects but your records show a general satisfactory standard. Although not all subjects can be used directly in a job, they may have indirect value. A knowledge of history is not required for most jobs but if history is one of your good subjects you will have learned to remember facts and details. This is an ability that can be useful in many jobs.
Your school may have taught you skills, such as typing or technical drawing, which you can use in your work. You may be good at metalwork or cookery and look for a job where you can improve these skills. If you have had a part-time job on Saturdays or in the summer, think what you gained from it. If nothing else, you may have learned how to get to work on time, to follow instructions and to get on with older workers. You may have learned to give correct change in a shop, for example. Just as important, you may become interested in a particular industry or career you see from the inside in a part-time job.
Facing your weak points is also part of knowing yourself. You may be all thumbs when you handle tools; perhaps you are a poor speller or cannot add up a column of figures. It is better to face any weakness than to pretend they do not exist. Your school record, for instance, may not be too good, yet it is an important part of your background. You should not be apologetic about it but instead recognize that you will have a chance of a fresh start at work.
63.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The significance of working hard at school.
B.The direct and indirect value of school work.
C.How to face one’s weakness.
D.Choosing a career according to one’s strong points.
64.According to the passage, doing a part-time job as a student ____________.
A.can help afford one’s education
B.is a good way to practice the skills learnt in school
C.can help you to prepare for future work
D.is a waste of time that could have been spent on study
65.From the passage we learn that if a student’s school performance is not good, he _______.
A.should pay more attention to learning skills and developing abilities
B.will be regretful about his bad results
C.may also do well in his future work
D.should restart his study in school
66.The underlined phrase “be all thumbs” (in Paragraph 3) probably means “_________”.
A.be clumsy at doing things
B.be skillful in doing things
C.do not have interest in certain things
D.be easily bored in doing things
67.From the last paragraph we know one should _________.
A.make full use of one’s own weak points
B.study harder for a new school record
C.face one’s own weak points bravely
D.apologize for one’s own school record
D
More than seven hundred students will serve for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games not as volunteers but as interns(实习生), working for months before the event and during the Games to help ensure its success.
A co-operation agreement was signed between the Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad (GOCOG) and 16 Beijing-based universities and colleges. The schools will prepare the students to be interns.
Although the interns will work without pay, they are considered different to volunteers, who will also provide services for the Games.
Well-known schools such as Peking University, Tsinghua University, Renmin University of China, Beijing Normal University and Beijing Jiaotong University are included on the list.

They have to finish the required lessons of their universities first and then learn more in their specialities to qualify to work for the BOCOG. They will take some special classes on Olympic knowledge and certain professional lessons outside the university to meet the needs of serving in the Olympics.
The 706 interns will be made up of 446 postgraduates, 118 undergraduates and 142 higher vocational students. They will come from such majors as foreign languages, media and communications, logistics and legal affairs.
According to university officials, the undergraduates will be students who have been admitted to college this year (2005) while the postgraduates will be those who enter next year.

In today’s Internet age, the demand for online games continues to grow. Online computer game centers exist in many cities and towns throughout Asia. Facing the pressures of school and life, people tend to the virtual world, expecting a diversion from these problems. Too often, however, they can lead to problems and unhealthy addictions.
This is most clearly seen in the example of South Korea. The country has the world’s highest percentage of high-speed Internet services. It also has a high number of online game players and related problems. In 2002, a young man collapsed(突然晕倒) and died while playing online games. He had been playing almost nonstop for 86 hours at an Internet café. Another young man killed his sister after becoming confused between the online world and real life. A 12-year-old boy stole US $ 16,000 from his father and ran away from home. He did this to continue his obsession(着迷) with an online game. Such problems, however, don’t just happen in South Korea. They are spreading to other parts of Asia, as well.
What kinds of people develop online game addiction? What does the problem look like? Dr. SueHuei Chen, a clinical psychologist, researches Internet addiction. She discovered some signs of at-risk individuals such as lack friendships and good social skills. Those problem individuals feel it so compulsive to play online games that they could sacrifice things such as school or family. They feel the need to spend more and more time online. And they become upset if anyone tries to limit their online game playing.
How many problem game players are there? In mainland China, the potential number of problem online gamers is alarming. In 2004, the China daily reported that China had 13.8 million online game players. Furthermore, it stated that 80 percent of these were under 25 and had signs of addiction. Such numbers point toward a growing problem among Chinese youth.
Make sure to keep control over your online game playing. If you don’t control it, it can get control of you.
72.What is mainly discussed in the passage?
A.The disadvantages of the Internet.
B.The online game problems in Asia.
C.The popularity of online games worldwide.
D.The cause of online game addiction.
73.The underlined word “diversion” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to __________.
A.career B.comfort C.escape D.support
74.According to Paragraph 2, which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.Online violence is blamed for the young killer’s wrong action.
B.Online game playing is responsible for the young man’s death.
C.People in South Korea have access to the Internet most easily.
D.The teenage boy stole money due to his playing games online.
75.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Most people in Asia have developed an addiction to online games.
B.Online game addictions cause many life-and-death problems in South Korea.
C.Lonely and unsocial people seem to more easily develop Internet addictions.
D.In the year 2004 there were a total of 13.8 million Chinese visiting the Internet.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your offer of inviting me to the summer English course in your school. As for my choice between the two courses, I prefer the four-week course for 60 hours of study. Because this would allow me more time to do some traveling and make a few new friends too.
Of all the subjects I’m learning at school, I like English best. I have been learning English for 6 years but my spoken English remains poor. So I hope to take this chance to improve it. If possible, I’d like to stay with a family for a couple of days so that I can know some customs in England. I believe I will have a wonderful time this summer.
Yours truly,
Li Hua
