第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中选出最佳答案。

A

Scratchy throats, stuffy noses and body aches all spell misery, but being able to tell if the cause is a cold or flu, may make a difference in how long the misery lasts.
The American Lung Association (ALA) has reported on combating colds and the flu(流感), and one of the keys is being able to quickly tell the two apart. That's because the prescription drugs available for the flu need to be taken soon after the illness starts. As for colds, the sooner a person starts taking over-the-counter remedy, the sooner relief will come.
The common cold and the flu are both caused by viruses. More than 200 viruses can cause cold symptoms(症状), while the flu is caused by three viruses - flu A, B and C. There is no cure for either illness, but the flu can be prevented by the flu vaccine, which is, for most people, the best way to fight the flu, according to the ALA.
But if the flu does strike, quick action can help. Although the flu and common cold have many similarities, there are some obvious signs to look for.
Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, runny nose and sore throat typically develop gradually, and adults and teens often do not get a fever. On the other hand, fever is one of the characteristic features of the flu for all ages. And in general, flu symptoms including fever and chills, sore throat and body aches come on suddenly and are more severe than cold symptoms.
The ALA notes that it may be particularly difficult to tell when infants and preschool age children have the flu. It advises parents to call the doctor if their small children have flu-like symptoms.
Both cold and flu symptoms can be eased with over-the-counter medications as well. However, children and teens with a cold or flu should not take aspirin for pain relief because of the risk of Reye syndrome(综合症) ,a rare but serious condition of the liver and central nervous system.
There is, of course, no vaccine for the common cold. But frequent hand washing and avoiding close contact with people who have colds can reduce the likelihood of catching one.
56. According to the author, knowing the cause of the misery will help
  A. prevent people from catching colds and the flu
  B. the patient obtain cheaper prescription drugs
  C. the patient buy medicine over the counter
  D. shorten the duration of the illness
57. Which of the following symptoms will distinguish the flu from a cold?
  A.  A sore throat. B. A stuffy nose. C.  A dry cough. D.  A high temperature.
58. If children have flu-like symptoms, their parents
  A. are encouraged to take them to hospital for vaccination
  B. are advised not to give them aspirin
  C. should watch out for signs of Reye syndrome
  D. should prevent them from mixing with people running a fever

B

While still in its early stages, welfare reform has already been judged a great success in many states — at least in getting people off welfare(福利). It’s estimated that more than 2 million people have left the rolls since 1994.
In the past four years, welfare rolls in Athens County have been cut in half. But 70 percent of the people who left in the past two years took jobs that paid less than $6 an hour. The result: The Athens County poverty rate still remains at more than 30 percent — twice the national average.
For advocates(代言人)for the poor, that’s an indication much more needs to be done.
“More people are getting jobs, but it’s not making their lives any better,” says Kathy Lairn, a policy analyst at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington.
A center analysis of US Census data nationwide found that between 1995 and 1996, a greater percentage of single, female-headed households were earning money on their own, but that average income for these households actually went down.
But for many, the fact that poor people are able to support themselves almost as well without government aid as they did with it is in itself a huge victory.
“Welfare was a poison. It was a toxin(毒素)that was poisoning the family,” says Robert Rector, a welfare-reform policy analyst. “The reform in changing the moral climate in low-income communities. It’s beginning to rebuild the work ethic(道德观), which is much more important.”
Mr. Rector and others argued that once “the habit of dependency is cracked(破裂),” then the country can make other policy changes aimed at improving living standards.
59. From the passage, it can be seen that the author _______.

A. believes the reform has reduced the government’s burden
  B. insists that welfare reform is doing little good for the poor
  C. is overenthusiastic about the success of welfare reform
  D. considers welfare reform to be fundamentally successful
60. Why aren’t people enjoying better lives when they have jobs?
  A. Because many families are divorced.
  B. Because government aid is now rare.
  C. Because their wages are low.
  D. Because the cost of living is rising.
61. What is worth noting from the example of Athens County is that _______.
  A. greater efforts should be made to improve people’s living standards
  B. 70 percent of the people there have been employed for two years
  C. 50 percent of the population no longer relies on welfare
  D. the living standards of most people are going down
62. From the passage we know that welfare reform aims at _______.
  A. saving welfare funds
  B. rebuilding the work ethic
  C. providing more jobs
  D. cutting government expenses
63. According to the passage before the welfare reform was carried out, _______.
  A. the poverty rate was lower
  B. average living standards were higher
  C. the average worker was paid higher wages
  D. the poor used to rely on government aid

c
It’s plain common sense — the more happiness you feel, the less unhappiness you experience. It’s plain

common sense, but it’s not true. Recent research reveals that happiness and unhappiness are not really

two sides of the same emotion. They are two distinct feelings that, coexisting, rise and fall

independently.

People might think that the higher a person’s level of unhappiness, the lower their level of happiness and vice versa. But when researchers measure people’s average levels of happiness and unhappiness, they often find little relationship between the two.

The recognition that feelings of happiness and unhappiness can co-exist much like love and hate in a close relationship may offer valuable clues on how to lead a happier life. It suggests, for example, that changing or avoiding things that make you miserable may well make you less miserable, but probably won’t make you any happier. That advice is backed up by an extraordinary series of studies which indicate that unhappiness may run in certain families. On the other hand, researchers have found happiness doesn’t appear to be anyone’s heritage. The capacity for joy is a talent you develop largely for yourself.

Psychologists have settled on a working definition of the feeling — happiness is a sense of subjective well-being. They have also begun to find out who’s happy, who isn’t and why. To date, the research hasn’t found a simple formula for a happy life, but it has discovered some of the actions and attitudes that seem to bring people closer to that most desired of feelings.

Why is unhappiness less influenced by environment? When we are happy, we are more responsive to people and keep up connections better than when we are feeling sad. This doesn’t mean, however, that some people are born to be sad and that’s that. Genes may pre-arrange one to unhappiness, but arrangement can be influenced by personal choice. You can increase your happiness through your own actions.

64. According to the text, it is true that

A. unhappiness is more inherited than affected by environment.

B. happiness and unhappiness are really two sides of the same emotion

C. unhappiness is subject to external more than internal factors.

D. happiness is an uncontrollable subjective feeling.

65. The author argues that one can achieve happiness by

A. maintaining it at an average level.

B. escaping miserable occurrences in life.

C. pursuing it with one’s painstaking effort.

D. realizing its coexistence with unhappiness.

66. The phrase “To date” (Par.4) can be best replaced by

  A.  As a result. B. In addition. C. At present. D. Until now.

67. The sentence “That’s that” (Par. 5) probably means: Some people are born to be sad

A. and the situation cannot be altered.

B. and sadness remains changeable.

C. but they don’t think much about it.

D. but they remain unconscious of it.

East Timor became the world’s newest nation on Monday after centuries of foreign rules.

East Timor lies between Australia and Indonesia. The island lies to the north of Australia and is 2,100 kilometers east of Jakarta. The latter ruled the territory for 24 often bloody years until the United Nations took over in 1999. East Timor was invaded by Portugal in 1642 and set up a trading pest for sandalwood (檀香木). Dutch colonial rule expanded over the rest of Indonesian archipelago (群岛) at the same time. A treaty in 1859 gave the eastern part of the island to the Dutch.

The Portuguese administration withdrew from Dilly which is the capital of the new country in August 1975. Indonesian troops invaded in December and Jakarta ignored a call by the United Nations to withdraw its troops.

The United Nations took over the running of East Timor in late 1999, helping to lay the foundations for independence. The United Nations kept some police and civilian officials in East Timor after May 20, 2002. On April 14, East Timor held its first presidential election, with 86 percent of those eligible (识字的) to vote turning out former guerrilla leader and independence hero Xanana Gusmao. This was a landslide triumph over his only rival.

East Timor is one of Asia’s poorest countries. It is an agricultural society, with coffee the main export crop. It also exports marble and has potentially lucrative (赚钱的) oil.

East Timor has a population of approximately 740,000. Ninety percent of East Timorese are Roman Catholic, whereas the rest of Indonesian, the last ruling power, is mostly Muslim.

1. Reading Interests of Senior Middle School Students

Recently a survey has been done to find out the reading interests of senior middle school students. In this survey, one thousand senior middle school students from ten schools in Beijing were interviewed. They were asked which they liked reading most among the four categories of English articles: news, stories, popular science articles and articles about learning methods.

The survey shows that more than half of the students like to read news most. Twenty-six percent of the students say that English stories are their favorite. Only seven percent of the students are most interested in learning methods. However, the number of students who enjoy reading popular science articles doubles that of those who prefer reading articles about learning methods.

2. What Will the Child Become?

Look at this picture. Here is a family of five. The only child is riding his “horse”—his father What a proud “king” he looks! She is working hard carrying an electronic piano and a drawing board. But what will the child become in the future? He’ll think of himself more important than anyone else. He’ll be able to do anything without help. He’ll become no good for the world.
