The Beijing municipal government has stepped up efforts to provide an efficient, safe and quick transportation system for the 2008 Olympic Games through planned special transport lines connecting Olympic venues (Èü³¡) with the city external and internal routes.

It is estimated that Beijing will receive a maximum of 1.2 million people per day at Olympic venues during the 15-day competition period.

The transportation lines will mainly depend on a special transportation circle for the

Olympics and several other main streets in Beijing. The circle consists of parts of the fourth and fifth ring roads and their connecting roads.

Beijing will provide a special bus service and free public transport services to athletes, coaches and judges. Olympic officials and other honored guests will receive free car services.

As part of the transport layout, the public transport system, especially the urban railway, is the priority project under construction. The length of the urban railway will reach over 100 kilometers later this month with the opening to traffic of the western section of the No. 13 Line.

In an effort to speed up the development of public transport, new subway lines totaling 126 kilometers will be constructed from the current 63 kilometers.

Among the planned urban railway lines, a high-speed 23 kilometer line will be constructed in the future to connect urban Beijing with the Capital International Airport, which is the first stop for most athletes and visitors to the 2008 Games.

On my first day in a college classroom, I felt like an overgrown child returning to civilization after having been lost in the forest for thirty years. There I sat, old enough to be a father to most of the students in the room, yet insecure enough to be their baby brother. We crowded elbow to elbow, listening to a professor who looked even younger than the students. I felt awkward and out of place as the professor carefully explained what she expected us to learn. As I listened. I couldn't help but think of my own oldest daughter who was now beginning her freshman year in college, just like me. I recalled how hard I had tried to instill(½¥½¥ÅàÑø)self-confidence in her and my other children. So why did I suddenly feel like a scared child myself? When I walked out of that classroom, I had serious doubts about my ability to make it through college. Not until late that

night did my thinking change. It was a long-distance telephone call from my daughter, my fellow college freshman, that did the trick. She spoke on the phone about the doubts, worries, and anxieties she was experiencing. She was certain that she'd never succeed at college. How familiar her worries sounded! In my most self-assured parental voice, I said, "Doing world asks." The next day in class, those words still echoed in my head. When the professor posed a question for the class, nobody, including me, dared answer. When I looked and uncertainty on the young faces in that room, I knew exactly what I had to do:

the world asks. So I raised my hand, and the professor called on me. I spoke.

your best is all the round at the fear and: my best. That's all

Although intelligence has been studied, and the brain has been studied, there is little

understanding of how the brain works to produce intelligence. This has something to do with the fact that the brain contains around 100 billion cells (about the number of stars in the Milky Way).

One of the continuing myths about the relationship between intelligence and the brain is that the brains of very clever people are somehow physically different from those of ordinary people.

At the beginning of the century an American scientist called E.A. Spitzka produced a list of the weights of the brains of important, well-known men. The heaviest brain on the list was that of Turgenev, the Russian novelist, at 2000g. However, the brain of another genius, Walt Whitman,

weighed only 1282g.

There are similarities between brains and computers. Computers can do complicated

calculations at unbelievable speeds. But they work in a fixed way, because they can't make memory associations. If we need a screwdriver and there isn't one, we will think laterally (ºáÏò) and use a knife or coin instead. Computers can't do this. In fact, it is claimed that when it comes to seeing, moving and reacting to stimuli (´Ì¼¤), no computer can compete with even the brain power of a fly.

Most of our mental processes are deeply formed habits. Challenging your brain to do things differently helps it develop. Try changing routines as often as you can: take a bus instead of going by car, sit in a different chair. An extreme but useful exercise is to read something upside down you can actually feel your brain at work.

Exercise more. Good health and fitness levels give you overall improved energy which leads to better concentration. Cooking is a good all-round mental exercise. It needs mathematical, organizational and scientific skills as well as challenging memory and creative ability. Use recipes at first and then learn to guess amounts, combinations, reactions of ingredients (ÅäÁÏ) and timing.

Do puzzles and play games. Teach yourself to work out codes and expand your vocabulary at the same time.

68. The writer compares the brain with a _____.

69. The example of Walt Whitman is given to show that _____.

A. he is not as clever as Turgenev

B. there's no relationship between weights of brain and intelligence

C. the bigger the brain, the cleverer the man.

D. the brain of the genius is quite different from that of the ordinary¡¡ v

70. The author mentions a screwdriver to explain that _____.

A. we can use something different instead of it

B. only the brain remembers the past

C. human brain is more powerful than computers

D. brain works the same way as computers

71. What do the last 4 paragraphs of the text mainly tell us?

A. Make your brain work.¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ B. Exercise is good for your health.

C. Enjoy cooking rather than eating.¡¡¡¡ D. Good habits should not be changed.

I made a pledge (·¢ÊÄ) to myself on the way down to the vacation beach cottage. For two weeks I would try to be a loving husband and father. Totally loving. No ifs, ands or buts.

The idea had come to me as I listened to a talk on my car radio. The speaker was quoting a Biblical (Ê¥¾µÄ) passage about husbands being thoughtful of their wives. Then he went on to say, "Love is an act of will. A person can choose to love." To myself, I had to admit that I had been a selfish husband. Well, for two weeks that would change.

And it did. Right from the moment I kissed Evelyn at the door and said, "That new yellow sweater looks great on you."

"Oh, Tom, you noticed," she said, surprised and pleased, maybe a little puzzled.

After the long drive, I wanted to sit and read. Evelyn suggested a walk on the beach. I started to refuse, but then I thought, "Evelyn's been alone here with the kids all week and now she wants to be alone with me." We walked on the beach while the children flew their kites.

So it went. Two weeks of not calling the Wall Street firm where I am a director; a visit to the shell museum though I usually hate museums. Relaxed and happy, that's how the whole vacation passed. I made a new pledge to keep on remembering to choose love.

There was one thing that went wrong with my experiment, however. Evelyn and I still laugh about it today. On the last night at our cottage, preparing for bed, Evelyn stared at me with the saddest expression.

"What's the matter?" I asked her.

"Tom," she said in a voice filled with distress, "do you know something I don't?"

"What do you mean?"

"Well...that checkup (Ìå¼ì) I had several weeks ago ... our doctor ... did he tell you

something about me? Tom, you've been so good to me ... am I dying?"

It took a moment for it all to sink in. Then I burst out laughing.

"No, honey," I said, wrapping her in my arms. "You're not dying; I'm just starting to live."

72. In the first paragraph, "No ifs, ands or buts" probably means _____.

A. unnecessarily¡¡¡¡ B. unexpectedly¡¡¡¡ C. impossibly¡¡¡¡ D. unconditionally

73. How did Tom drive to the beach cottage?

A. With his family.¡¡B. With Evelyn.¡¡¡¡ C. Alone.¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ D. With his children.

Ban Smoking In Public Places?

Smoking bans can be seen in public places in many countries. Our class had a

heated discussion on banning smoking in public places. Opinions fall into two.

Some students agree that smoking is dangerous, and leads to many diseases like

cancer and heart disease. Not only does smoking harm smokers themselves but also

harm the people around them. Bans in public places would also urge smokers to smoke

less or give it up.

However, others hold an opposite view. They believe that it's legal to smoke and

smokers should have the freedom and right to smoke in any place they like. Besides, bans

on smoking in public places would drive many bars, pubs or clubs out of business. What's

worse, many people will become jobless because of this.
