One of the things I always believe is that no matter how bad something is you can 36  something valuable out of it. The 37  I wasn’t sure of that was on September 11.

I heard old people 38  about the attack on Pearl Harbor and Kennedy’s being murdered and how greatly those events 39  them in their lives. For my __40 , the tragedy of September 11 can be 41  that of Pearl Harbor. We will be talking about the terrible effect 42  our country, and on our lives as single human beings, for years to come.

It wasn’t until a few weeks 43  September 11 that I began to see that perhaps something good did come from this tragedy. People seem 44  now, more understanding, more friendly. Little things that seemed to be much a bother before are no longer a 45  deal. Personally, I am more patient than I was. I realize life is too short, and 46 , to let myself get upset over unimportant things. Life is also too short to carry complaints and 47  I’ve become more forgiving and understanding. I’ve learned also that you can’t take things for granted. You know how we always say “ 48  you later.” One thing I have realized from September 11 is that you can’t ever say that for sure. 49   change in the blink of an eye. People go to  _50_  and don’t come back. One minute they are living and the 51  minute they are not. And, it doesn’t 52  who you are because there is noting you can do about it.  We 53  know when our time here will be over, so we all need to make the 54  of every minute we have.

You try to learn from what happened. You cannot live by it. All you can do is just to 55 .

Earlier, we explained how to begin a search for schools by going to one of the American educational advising centers around the world. We also discussed the rules for entering in the United States. And we talked about programs that can be completed online.

But if your goal is to come to the United States to study, then it is time to make a list of colleges or universities that interest you. Be sure to choose more than one. Directors of foreign student admissions say students should apply to at least three schools.

Some students want to attend a small college. Others want to go to a big university. If a really big university appeals to you, then there are ones like Ohio State. That  university in Columbus, Ohio, in the Midwest, has almost fifty – two thousand students. There are students this year from around one hundred fifty countries.

Ohio State provides international students with an application on its Web site. You can pay the application charge online with a credit card. Or you can print the forms and mail them with the payment.

Many colleges and universities have their applications and also their catalogs(目录)online.

You should start on your applications at least two years before you want to begin studies.

Completing a college application can take some time. But answering all the questions is not enough. Another important step is taking admissions tests. The SAT is the college entry test that American high school students most commonly take. Another one is the ACT.

Colleges and universities may also require international students to take the TOEFL – the Test of English as a Foreign Language.

If you have a general question for our Foreign Student Series, write to special @ voanews. com.

MANCHESTER, England — Here's some good news that vegetarians (素食者) can really sink their teeth into: Researchers in UMA Group have developed genetically (转基因地) engineered fruit trees that produce real meat!

Fruit from the new Meat Trees, developed by British scientists using the gene technology, is closely like ordinary grape-fruit. But when you cut the fruit open, inside is fresh beef!

"Our trees may sound like something out of a science fiction movie, but it's really true," declares Dr. Vincent, director of the UMA Group, which created the amazing trees. "Vegetarians have been complaining for years that in spite of their firm belief against eating meat, they still desire the taste of meat once in a while. Now they can have their cake and eat it too."

Although it's taken 12 years to develop the trees, the idea is simple. "We take the genes from cattle and put them into the cells (细胞) of grape-fruit trees," Dr. Vincent says. "When the seeds grow into trees, they produce meat instead of ordinary fruit. You get the taste — even the smell."

Those who've tried the meat agree it tastes like the real thing. "I was a bit unwilling to believe at first when I sank my teeth into a hamburger after they told me it grew on a tree," says Londoner Mark, who took part in a taste-test. "But it was juicy and delicious ─ nothing leafy about it at all."

Meat Tree products could be on the market in Great Britain by the end of the year and on dinner plates in the U.S. by 2006. Some vegetarians insist they should never eat meat — even if it grew on a tree. Others love the idea. "My mouth is watering already," says a devoted vegetarian of 20 years.

As soon as it was said that a reporter for Progressive magazine had discovered how to make a hydrogen bomb, a group of firearm (火器) fans formed the National Hydrogen Bomb Association, and they are now trying to persuade the politicians to stop Americans from owning one.

“The Constitution,” said the association’s spokesman, “gives everyone the right to own arms. It doesn’t spell out what kind of arms. But since anyone can now make a hydrogen bomb, the public should be able to buy it to protect themselves.”

“Don’t you think it’s dangerous to have one in the house, particularly where there are children around?”

“The National Hydrogen Bomb Association hopes to educate people in the safe handling of this type of weapon. We are instructing owners to keep the bomb in a locked closet and the fuse (导火索) separately in a drawer.”

“Some people consider the hydrogen bomb a very fatal weapon which could kill somebody.”

The spokesman said, “Hydrogen bombs don't kill people—people kill people. The bomb is for self-protection and it also has a deterrent(威慑的)effect. If somebody knows you have a nuclear weapon in your house, they're going to think twice about breaking in.”

“But those who want to ban the bomb for American citizens claim that if you have one locked in the closet, with the fuse in a drawer, you would never be able to get it together in time to stop an intruder (侵入者).”

“Another argument against allowing people to own a bomb is that at the moment it is very expensive to build one. So what your association is backing is a program which would allow the middle and upper classes to acquire a bomb while poor people will be left defenseless with just handguns.”

68. Some people oppose the ownership of H-bombs by individuals on the grounds that ____.

C. people's lives will be threatened by the weapon

D. can kill those entering others' houses by force

70. According to the passage, opponents of the private ownership of H-bombs are very much worried that ______.

A. the influence of the association is too powerful for the less privileged to overcome

B. poorly-educated Americans will find it difficult to make use of the weapon

C. the wide use of the weapon will push up living expenses tremendously

D. the cost of the weapon will put citizens on an unequal basis

71. From the tone of the passage we know that the author is ______.

A. doubtful about the necessity of keeping H-bombs at home for safety

B. unhappy with those who vote against the ownership of H-bombs

C. not serious about the private ownership of H-bombs

For more than two days in September 1974 , the people of Honduras shut their windows, locked their doors and covered in their homes . Fifi was outside , and they were frightened . By the time Fifi had left , 8,000 people were dead . Fifi wasn’t a pet dog as the name suggests . It was a hurricane , one of the most destructive natural phenomena in the world .

Why do we give human names to storms and hurricanes ? We didn’t always . Two hundred years ago , many hurricanes in the Caribbean were named after the saint’s(基督教徒的) day on which the storm occurred . Later , storms were known by the name of the city where they came ashore . Meteorologists(气象学家) then tried naming storms after the latitude and longitude where they occurred . Finally , in 1953, hurricanes started getting people’s names— specially , female names . Male names were added in 1979.

There are six sets of names for what the experts call “Atlantic tropical cyclones” (热带风暴). Each list is used every six years and consists of 21 names , starting with every letter but Q, U, X, Y and Z. The names alternate between male and female . A storm won’t get a name until its winds reach 39 mph or about 62.4 kph , at which point it becomes a tropical storm . At 74 mph or 118.4 kph its declared a hurricane . 书面表达:

Dear editor,

I am writing to you to talk about taking up occupations for college graduates. Nowadays many graduates are looking forward to obtaining employment in big cities, not willing to work in the countryside.

As a matter of fact, there are not enough opportunities to satisfy most of the hunters in big cities while in the countryside talented people are badly needed and a lot of posts are waiting for us. Rural areas are a vast world, you can put your abilities to good use and you’ll be able to make greater contributions to the building of new countryside.

Therefore, I believe we can have as bright a future in the country as we have in the city.

Yours,

Li Hua

The other day our class had a discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of Thumb Culture.

Most students are for sending text messages with cell phones because rapidly typed messages can keep them in touch with one another constantly. Besides, text messages with greetings or jokes seem more fashionable to the young than hand-written cards.

However, the minority of the students are against it. They say Thumb Culture may cause new health problems or even injure the thumb by repeating the same typing movements too frequently. Unexpected messages may disturb your friends if they are working or studying. In addition, such traditional ways of communication as hand-written letters and cards can bring people more feeling of warmth.

Anyway, it’s hard for us to reach the same conclusion. Maybe the argument will long exist.
