A little girl was given so many picture books on her seventh birthday that her father thought his daughter should give one or two of her new books to a little neighbor boy named Robert, who had visited, more by design than by chance.

Now taking books or anything else from a little girl is like taking candy from a baby, but the father of the little girl had his way and Robert got two of her books. “After all, that leaves you nine,” said the father, who thought he was a philosopher and child psychologist(心理学家), and couldn’t shut his big stupid mouth on the subject.

A few weeks later the father went to his library to look up “father” in the Oxford English Dictionary to feast (以…饱眼福)his eyes on the praise of fatherhood through the centuries, but he couldn’t find volume(书卷) F-G and then he discovered that three others were missing, too — A-B, L-M, V-Z. He began to search his household, and learned what had happened to the four missing volumes.

“A man came to the door this morning,” said his little daughter, “and he didn’t know how to get from here to Torrington or, from Torrington to Wister, and he was a nice man, much nicer than Robert, and so I gave him four of your books. LONDON(Reuters)—Organic fruit, delivered right to the doorstep. That is what Gabriel Gold prefers, and he is willing to pay for it.If this is not possible, the 26-year-old computer technician will spend the extra money at the supermarket to buy organic food.

With fifteen years Britain and other nations should be well on with the building of huge industrial complexes for the recycling of waste. The word rubbish could lose its meaning because everything which goes into the dumps would be made into something useful. Even the most dangerous and unpleasant wastes would provide energy if nothing else.

The latest project is to take a city of around half a million inhabitants and discover exactly what raw materials(原材料) go into it and what go out. The aim is to find out how much of these raw materials could be provided if a plant for recycling waste were built just outside the city. This plant would recycle not only metal such as steel, lead and copper, but also paper and rubber as well.

Another new project is being set up to discover the best ways of sorting and separating the rubbish . When this project is complete, the rubbish will be processed like this: First, it will pass through sharp metal bars which will tear open the plastic bags in which rubbish is usually packed ; then it will pass through a powerful fan to separate the lightest elements from the heavy solids ; after that founders and rollers will break up everything that can be broken . Finally , the rubbish will pass under magnets (磁铁), which will remove the bits of iron and steel ; the rubber and plastic will then be sorted out in the final stage .

The first full-scale giant recycling plants are perhaps fifteen years away. Indeed, with the growing cost of transporting rubbish to more distant dumps, some big cities will be forced to build their own recycling plants before long.

68.What is NOT mentioned as a part of the recycling process described in paragraph 3 ?

A.Breaking up whatever is breakable.       B.Sharpening metal bars.

C.Separating light elements from the heavy ones. D.Sorting out small pieces of metal.

69.What’s the main reason for big cities to build their own recycling plants ?

A.To deal with wastes in a better way. B.To protect the environment from pollution.

C.To get raw materials locally.         D.To get big profits from those plants.

70.The first full-scale huge recycling plants      .

A.began to operate fifteen years ago B.will probably take less than fifteen years to build

C.will be built fifteen years later     D.will probably be in operation in fifteen years

71.The passage is mainly about      .

A.a cheap way to get energy B.the location of recycling plants

C.new ways of recycling wastes D.the probability of city environment

Who taught you to speak English? Your parents, while you were a young child ?Your teacher at school? Perhaps even the BBC as a grown-up .Whoever it was, somehow you have developed an understanding of what is rapidly becoming a truly global language.

There are now about 376 million people who speak English as their first language, and about the same number who have learnt it in addition to their mother tongue. There are said to be one billion people learning English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in English.

Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures? Or should we worry about the dangers of monoculturalism, a world in which we all speak the same language ,eat the same food and listen to the same music?

Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? On the contrary, I would have thought—although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars .Ask the people of India (where many of them speak at least some English )and Pakistan (the same situation with India)…

If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonald’s burgers? Surely not. If English becomes more dominant(占主导地位), it will kill other languages? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well.

When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderful poetic email from a listener in Ireland. “The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it’s like a rose,” he said. “But who would ever want their garden just full of roses?”

Well, I love roses and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few roses, you don’t necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people want to plant English roses, that’s fine by me .

72.By saying “Ask the people of India…and Pakistan” (in Paragraph 4), the author is trying to

  show that ______.

A.speaking the same language doesn’t necessarily bring peace

B.wars can destroy the relationship between two countries

C.English doesn’t kill other languages          D.English is widely used in the world

73.What does “garden” in the last two paragraphs stand for?

  A.Language B.Family C.The world      D.The Earth

74.The author would probably agree that     .

A.it’s very hard to plant many kinds of flowers in a garden

B.it’s good for people from other countries to learn English

C.more and more people like to plant roses in their gardens

D.English is easier to learn than other languages

75.This passage is mainly about     .

A.why English has become a global language

B.how many people in the world speak English

C.how people in the world learn English as a foreign language

D.whether we need to worry about English being a world language
