阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D中选出最佳选项)

Believe it or not, optical illusion (错觉) can cut highway crashes.
Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. Bent stripes, called chevrons (人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down.
Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan’s success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.
Excessive speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards (危险) are the greatest — curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges.
Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal (水平的) bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.
Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a lane (车道) appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

41..The passage mainly discusses __________.
  A. a new way of highway speed control B. a new pattern for painting highways
  C. a new approach to training drivers D. a new type of optical illusion
42.On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that __________.
  A. they should avoid speed-related hazards B. they are driving in the wrong lane
  C. they should slow down their speed D. they are approaching the speed limit
43.The advantage of chevrons over straight, horizontal bars is that the former ___________.
  A. can keep drivers awake B. can cut road accidents in half
  C. will have a longer effect on drivers D. will look more attractive
44.The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to __________.
  A. try out the Japanese method in certain areas
  B. change the road signs across the country
  C. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevrons
  D. repeat the Japanese road patterns
45.What does the author say about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?
  A. They are falling out of use in the United States
  B. They tend to be ignored by drivers in a short period of time.
  C. They are applicable only on broad roads.
  D. They cannot be applied successfully to traffic circles.

Pulling heavy suitcases all day in the summer is hard work, especially when you’re a thin 14-year-old. That was me in 1940—the youngest and smallest baggage boy at New York City’s Pennsylvania Railway Station.

After just a few days on the job, I began noticing that the other fellows were overcharging passengers. I’d like to join them, thinking, “Everyone else is doing it.”

When I got home that night, I told my dad what I wanted to do. “You give an honest day’s work,” he said, looking at me straight in the eye. “They’re paying you. If they want to do that, you let them do that.”

I followed my dad's advice for the rest of that summer and have lived by his words ever since.

Of all the jobs I've had, it was my experience at Pennsylvania Railway Station that has stuck with me. Now I teach my players to have respect for other people and their possessions. Being a member of a team is a totally shared experience. If one person steals, it destroys trust and hurts everyone. I can put up with many things, but not with people who steal. If one of my players were caught stealing, he'd be gone.

Whether you’re on a sports team, in an office or a member of a family, if you can’t trust one another, there’s going to be trouble.

46. What can be inferred about the baggage boys?

A. They could earn much, but they had to work hard.

B. Many of them earned money in a dishonest way.

C. They were all from poor families. D. They were all thin, young boys.

47. What does the father's advice imply?

A. It is wrong to give more pay to the passengers.

B. Don’t believe them if they are paying you more.

C. Don’t follow others to overcharge the passengers.

D. It is difficult to work hard and live as an honest boy.

48. The writer can't put up with stealing because he thinks that ________.

A. it is a totally shared experience B. it is considered as the most dangerous

C. it does great harm to human relationship D. it may lead to the loss of his sports team

49. It can be concluded from the text that ________.

A. his father's advice helped him to decide which job to take up

B. working in the sports team was his most important experience

C. he learnt much from his shared experience with his team members

D. his experience as a baggage boy had a great influence on his later life

A thief who dropped a winning lottery ticket(彩票) at the scene of his crime has been given a lesson in honesty. His victim, who picked up the ticket, then claimed the £25000 prize, managed to trace him, and handed over the cash. The robbery happened when maths professor Vinicio Sabbatucci, 58, was changing a tyre on an Italian motorway. Another motorist, who stopped to “to help”, stole a suitcase from his car and drove off. The professor found the dropped ticket and put it in his pocket before driving home to Ascoli in eastern Italy.

Next day, he saw the lottery results on TV and, taking out the ticket, realized it was a winner. He claimed the 60 million lire (里拉) prize. Then he began a battle with his conscience. Finally, he decided he could not keep the money despite having been robbed. He advertised in newspapers and on radio, saying: “I’m trying to find the man who robbed me. I have 60 million lire for him --- a lottery win. Please meet me. Anonymity (匿名) guaranteed.”

Professor Sabbatucci received hundreds of calls from people hoping to trick him into handing them the cash. But there was one voice he recognized --- and he arranged to meet the man in a park. The robber, a 35-year-old unemployed father of two, gave back the suitcase and burst into tears. He could not believe what was happening. “Why didn’t you keep the money?” He asked. The professor replied: “ I couldn’t because it’s not mine.” Then he walked off, spurning the thief’s offer of a reward.

Using the telephone for business purpose is different. In any organization the person on the telephone represents the company and gives an impression of the firm to the outside world.

If you want to ensure good public relations, you need to master effective telephone techniques.

Avoid interruptions. Call at a time when you are unlikely to be distracted.

  During the call

Be courteous, polite. Make time for suitable greetings like “How are you today, Jim?” and “Did you enjoy your holiday?”

Put a smile in your voice. Remember, your caller can’t see you, so use intonation to good effect and try to sound confident, decisive, helpful and interested.

Check your notes. Look back at your notes to ensure that you have covered everything and quote figures and other data correctly.

Obtain feedback. Make sure that caller understands the message correctly, especially where deadlines and actions that are involved.

Be courteous. Finish by thanking the caller for his or her time and trouble.

  After the call

Make notes. Let it become a habit to make notes of the call and place them in an appropriate file.
