We gather a great deal of incidental knowledge from pets.If we look after them properly we learn what they like and dislike. We do not set out to gain this knowledge purposely, but in attending to our pets we gain it by the way. It is got without our realizing it.

In keeping our dogs or cats we learn about various diseases that can affect them, and the cures for these diseases. We learn how much sleep they need and what kind of food keeps them healthy. In looking after our fish we learn about the composition of water. We get to know what kinds of fish can live peacefully together and what kinds are hostile(敌对的)to each other. We learn that animal, fish and birds have a lot of things in common with human beings.

If children keep pets their general education is helped by this kind of incidental knowledge. One little incident after another in which their pets are involved adds to their store of learning. It is a more interesting form of learning than that given in the biology lesson in school.People who keep pets should have a sense of responsibility towards them.Children, too, should be taught to be responsible.Pets are completely dependent on their owners and the owners should respond to this dependence by looking after them.Irresponsible behavior towards pets is a form of cruelty.

In deciding to keep a pet we take on a task,we make ourselves responsible for providing proper food and shelter for the pet.In a crowded city like Hong Kong, where there is so little room for the exercise required by large pets,we should think twice before undertaking the responsibility of keeping one.

“I’ve changed my mind. I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my dad back.” Lucien Lawrence’s letter to Father Christmas written after his father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched every heart. Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn’t see the stars in the sky. When those whom we love depart from us, we cannot see the stars for a while.

But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one dya, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see then again. And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father is there too, in your mind and in your heart. I find that my parents, long dead now, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive. I still live to please them and I’m still surprised by their reactions. I remember that when I became a professor , I was so proud, or rather so pleased with myself, that I couldn’t wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did, all mother said was, “I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!” I haven’t forgotten. The values of my parents still live on.

It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care. Would I have been as ready ad Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors, and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It’s a serious thought, one to give me pause.

I pray silently, sometimes, in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet “Deliver my soul from the sword, and my darling from the power of the dog.” Yet I know the death comes to us all, and sometimes comes suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on, in the lives of those we loved, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today.

Is the Spirit of Lei Feng out of Style?

There are some voices claiming Lei Feng’s spirit has gone out of style in today’s society. They reason that in commodity economy(商品经济) people should seek more practical things, such as fame, money and the comfortable life. To them nothing is more important than those things, which are often regarded as the views of the present generation.

There are some other voices advocating(倡导) that the spirit of Lei Feng still has an enormous echo in millions of Chinese people. The great solider’s story has such a strong influence on people’s ideas, values and ways of life that in every field of society there arise countless “Living Lei Fengs”,who follow the example of Lei Feng and serve the people heart and soul.

In my opinion, the spirit of Lei Feng will never be out of date.Instead,it has been brought forward. Today more and more “ Lei Fengs”are coming forth from various circles among whom “Xu Hu” has already set a good example to the whole nation. The spirit of Lei Feng,an unselfish spirit, will always encourage us to go forward.

Is the Spirit of Lei Feng out of Style?

Whether to keep the spirit of Lei Feng is a heated topic of today. Some people think it no longer suitable in our commodity society, which makes people try to be famous, make more money and enjoy a better life. However, others value the importance of the spirit, which has influenced many people on their sense of value and way of life, such as Xu Hu.

In my class, many classmates are always helping those with difficulty in study. I think highly of their behaviour, which is another example of the spirit. In my opinion, the spirit of Lei Feng is not outdated but needs to be fully understood. The true meaning of Lei Feng spirit lies in giving rather than getting. We find pleasure in helping others.Besides, Lei Feng spirit not only means helping others, but also a noble sense of social duty and personal value.
