阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

A

It was a quarter past nine as Marie hurried into the office building where she would be working. Her bus had inched along through heavy morning traffic, making her a few minutes late for her very first job. She decided she would start out half an hour earlier the next day. Once inside the building, she had to stand at the lifts and wait several minutes before one arrived. When she finally reached the office marked "King Enterprises," she knocked at the door nervously and waited. There was no answer. She tapped on the door again, but still there was no reply. From inside the next office, she could hear the sound of voices, so she opened the door and went in. Although she was sure it was the same office she had been in two weeks before when she had had the interview with Mr. King, it looked quite different now. In fact, it hardly looked like an office at all. The employees were just standing around chatting and smoking. At the far end of the room, somebody must have just told a good joke, she thought, because there was a loud burst of laughter as she came in. For a moment she had thought they were laughing at her. Then one of the men looked at his watch, clapped his hands and said something to the others. Quickly they all went to their desks and, in a matter of seconds, everyone was hard at work. No one paid any mind to Marie. Finally she went up to the man who was sitting at the desk nearest to the door and explained that this was her first day in the office. Hardly looking up from his work, he told her to have a seat and wait for Mr. King, who would arrive at any moment. Then Marie realized that the day's work in the office began just before Mr. King arrived. Later she found out that he lived in Connecticut and came into Manhattan on the same train every morning, arriving in the office at 9:35, so that his staff knew exactly when to start working.

A. would start their work day by listening to a joke

C. were always punctual for work

D. lacked devotion to the company

45. What is probably the best title for the passage?

A. Punctual Like a Clock

B. A Cold Welcome

C. An Unpunctual Manager

D. Better Late Than Never

B

A letter to Edward, a columnist(报刊专栏作家)

Dear Mr. Expert:

I grew up in an unhappy and abusive home. I always Promised myself that I’d get out as soon as possible. Now, at age 20,I have a good job and a nice house, and I’m really proud of the independence I’ve achieved.

Here’s the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mine — so much so that they make mine theirs.

It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they seem to take it for granted that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.

I enjoy having my friends here sometimes— it makes the place feel comfortable and warm— but this is my home, not a party house. I was old enough to move out on my own, so why can’t I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy?

Joan

Edward’s reply to Joan

Dear Joan:

If your family didn’t pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.

And if you’ve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere, you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up with— or destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship it’s okay to put your own needs first from time to time.

Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, “I really love your company but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over.”

46. We can learn from the first letter that Joan Edward .

A. lives away from her parents

B. takes pride in her friends

C. knows Mr. Expert quite well

D. hates her parents very much

47. We can infer from the first letter that     .

A. Joan considers her friends more important than her privacy

B. Joan’s friends visit her more often than she can accept

C. Joan doesn’t like the parties at all

D. Joan dislikes the boyfriends her friends bring over

48. According to Mr. Expert, why can’t Joan tell her friends her feelings?

A. She is afraid of hurting her friends.

B. She does not understand true friendship.

C. Her family experience stops her from doing so.

D. She does not put her needs first.

49. The underlined word “conflict” in the second letter means .

A. dependent life B. fierce fight C. bad manners D. painful feeling

50. The second letter suggests that Mr. Expert .

A. is worried about Joan’s problem

B. warns Joan not to quarrel with her friends

C. advises Joan on how to refuse people

D. encourages Joan to be brave enough

C

A green house is a building made of glass which is used for keeping plants warm when the outside temperature is low. In a similar way there are several gases in the atmosphere which trap the heat produced by the sun and prevent it from escaping. These gases are known as "greenhouse gases", and the way in which they trap heat in the atmosphere is called the "greenhouse effect". this is not simply air pollution. Most of the main greenhouse gases exist naturally in small amounts in our atmosphere, and with out them the earth would be 30 degrees colder and human life would not exist. In other words, the greenhouse effect is a natural course, which is to some degree helpful to us.

The problem is that in the last century and a half, we have been putting too many of these gases into the earth's atmosphere by burning large quantities of coal and oil and by cutting down forests. The rapid increase in greenhouse gases is making the world warmer. The world's temperature has already gone up by half a degree this century, and the sea level has risen by 10 centimeters. If the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere doubles, there will probably be a rise in the earth's temperature of between 1 and 4. This may seem a small increase, but it would be enough to cause major changes in geography and agriculture. Large areas of the world would be flooded, and some areas would become dry and unable to produce crops. It is important, too, to consider that there may be a delay of about 30 years in the greenhouse effect. This means that we are probably experiencing only now the effect of the gases put into the atmosphere before the 1960s. Since then, our use of these gases has greatly increased.

51. "Greenhouse effect" means __________.
A. the way in which gases are used for keeping plants warm.
B. a natural course which is to some degree helpful to us.
C. the way 'greenhouse gases' trap heat on the earth.
D. the whole course in which greenhouse gases prevent heat.

52. If there were no greenhouse effect, __________.
A. no plants would grow on our planet.
B. the earth would be 30 degrees colder.
C. man could not live on the earth.
D. all of the above answers are correct.

53. Which of the following is not true?
A. Burning too much coal and oil produces lots of greenhouse gases.
B. It has become warmer on the earth now than in the past.
C. Gases put into the atmosphere now will effect the earth years later.
D. The temperature in a greenhouse is as high as that in the atmosphere.

54. Suppose the earth's temperature rose by 3 degrees __________.
A. great harm would be done to mankind.
B. the sea level would go up by 10 centimeters.
C. all the land in world would be flooded.
D. crops would be unable to grow on earth.

55. The passage mainly deals with __________.
A. the concept and harm of greenhouse effect.
B. the relation between greenhouse gases and man.
C. the concept and change of greenhouse effect.
D. the effect of the rise of the earth's temperature.

第二节 读写任务 (共1小题,满分25分)

 阅读下面的短文,然后按照要求写一篇150词左右的英语短文。

Reading exercises a great influence on a person. If pictures, still or moving, accompany the reading, the memory will keep half the material for a long time.

Don’t believe those who say that bad reading cannot hurt a person. How do they know what will hurt other? Wouldn’t you rather believe the experience of the ages that says, “A man is what he has read” and “Our reading and studies carry over into our lives”?

Let’s get back to the beneficial effects of thinking while reading. It helps us to enlarge our minds. We understand more about the universe, its people and many of its wonders. We learn to think and observe in new ways. We certainly do get a feeling for the language we are reading. All good writers in any language have been readers who read critically and creatively and continuously.

Finally, reading will and must broaden my sympathies, expand my love for others and set it in action. How can a person who has a bit of kindness in his heart read about all the miseries and tragedies that people and nations have and not want to do and actually do what he can to relieve those people in every way he can and as much as he can?

[写作内容]

1.概括短文的内容要点,该部分的字数大约30词左右;

2.就“读书的目的和意义”这个主题发表你的看法,至少包含以下的内容要点,该部分的字数大约120词左右:

b) 结合自己的读书经历来说明读书对你的启示和重要性。

 [写作要求]

b) 标题自定。

读写任务

The significance and purpose of reading

Reading can influence a person both positively and negatively. It can enlarge our minds, improve our thinking and expand our love and sympathies which in turn facilitate our actions, but bad reading also hurts since “A man is what he has read.”

Reading plays a very important role in life. It provides a source of satisfaction and pleasure, but also serves as a means to seek information and to acquire, develop and apply knowledge. People read to develop thinking skills, to enhance language proficiency and to broaden life experience, too.

For example, people advocate learning English through reading English novels. This method did not work miracle for me until one day when I was engaged in the story, I got the same enjoyment as I read Chinese novels. Then I realized that I shouldn’t let the pressure of learning ruin my enjoyment of reading. English is not and will never be the end by itself. The world through it is more fantastic and pleasant. This is what I have got from reading.
