The trees arrived by post, a half- opened parcel. They were thin and straight, rather like arrows but with shiny leaves at one end and muddy roots at the other. Terry and his father took them down the garden and planted them in their prepared places. Terry had great hopes of the middle tree, now set in the holy(神圣的) spot where, Henry , his cat , run over , had been laid to rest a year before. The nine trees made an avenue down one side of the garden, where there was already a fifteen -foot stone wall between the garden and the back-yards of the Jenkins Street houses.
“Why do we want a row of trees as a wall ?”Terry asked his father.
His father said,“For privacy(隐居)。These trees grow very thickly.”
His father's love of privacy often puzzled Terry, who was not one to keep himself to himself, but he could see part of the point here. The houses in Jenkins Street were on higher ground. His friend Leslie lived in number twelve, and Leslie had only to stand on a box to see right over the wall.
“Will the tree grow higher than the wall?”
“Oh yes, twice as high if not more. It'll take a few year but they'll grow.”
So they were going to have nine trees thirty feet tall, to keep them from being overlooked. Terry wondered why this was so desirable. He said, “Our garden is very pretty. Why can't we let the people over the wall see it? That wouldn't be showing off (炫耀),would it ?”
“NO, I don't think it would be,” his father said.“Yet some people might feel a bit less happy if they can always see a good thing that isn't theirs. We don't want to be the cause of any jealousy(妒忌)if we can help it.” The consideration for other people's feelings must be a grownup thing, Terry thought. It was not his idea of how to run things. H said,“These trees-it seems a lot of trouble to go to just to stop people being jealous of us.”
His father looked at him.“It isn't much trouble, Terry,” he said.“These trees will grow without help from us. They'll be beautiful. And Listen to them. You can already hear them whispering to us in the wind.”

The idea of a special day to honor mothers was first put forward in America in 1907. Two years later a woman, Mrs. John Bruce Dodd, in the state of Washington proposed a similar day to honor the head of the family - the father. Her mother died when she was very young, and her father brought her up. She loved her father very much.
In response to Mrs. Dodd's idea that same year - 1909, the state governor of Washington proclaimed the third Sunday in June Father's Day. The idea was officially approved by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge suggested national observance of the occasion “ to build up closer relations between fathers and their children , and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations (责任).”The red or white rose is recognized as the official Father's Day flower.
Father's Day took longer to establish on a national scale than Mother's Day, but as the idea gained popularity, tradesmen and manufacturers began to see the commercial(商业的) possibilities. They encouraged sons and daughters to honor their fathers with small thank-you presents, such as a tie or a pair of socks , as well as greeting cards.
During the Second World War, American serviceman stationed in Britain began to request Father's Day greeting cards to send home. This brought about a response with British card publishers. Though at first the British public was slow to accept this rather artificial day, it's now well celebrated in Britain on the third Sunday in June in much the same way as in America.
Father's Day seems to be much less important an occasion than the Mother's Day. Not many of the children offer their fathers some presents . But the American fathers still think they are much better fated than the fathers of many other countries , who have not even a day for their sake in name only.

Why is a full moon , yellower and bigger when it is coming up than it is higher in the sky?
That’s a good question about something that we all can see. Let ‘s talk about the moon’s color first.
We see the moon only because of the sunlight that falls on it and is reflected . Actually , the moon is not a very good reflector , because its surface is all rocks and dirt . We see it in almost its true color when it is high in the sky .
When the moon first comes up , its light reaches our eyes after an extra –long through the atmosphere .There are lots of particles(微粒)scattering (分散)light in that long path .Blue light is scattered more than other colors ,which means that it doesn’t reach your eyes .The light that is left over looks yellow to your eye .
Now about the other question –why the
moon seems to change in size .That’s more complicated. It’s not an effect of
the atmosphere ,the way color is ; it’s not caused by something fooling your
eyes .It seems ,instead ,to be caused by something that fools your brain –an
illusion(错觉).
Here’s a drawing that creates an illusion .The two cones are really
the same size .But the rest of the drawing makes the right –hand
cone seem farther away .Your brain knows that faraway objects are
really larger than they look .It decides that the right –hand cone must be larger because it seems to be farther away .
Similarly ,when you seen the moon just come up over a line of trees or houses –or whatever makes the horizon(地平线)-it may be that your brain decides that the moon must be larger because it seems to be farther away .
72. The moon doesn’t reflect the sunlight very well because .
A. it is high in the sky B. its surface is rough
C. its surface is white D. it isn’t a good reflector
73. Which statement is NOT TRUE according to the passage ?
A. The sunlight falls on the moon and is reflected .
B. The moonlight yellow when it comes up .
C. In the course of the moon’s rising ,the moonlight first looks blue and then yellow.
D. In the atmosphere ,many small particles make the moonlight lose its blue color.
74. Which statement is true according to the passage ?
A. In the course of its rising ,the moon is getting smaller and smaller .
B. The size of the moon is more complicated than its color.
C. The atmosphere has the same effect on the moon’s size as on its color .
D. The change in the moon’s size is caused by an illusion while that in its color is caused by the atmosphere .
75. After reading the passage ,you can possibly answer one of the following questions. Which one ?
A. Why does the sun look bigger when it rises over the horizon ?
B. Why is the sun bigger when it rises over the horizon ?
C. Why does the sun look golden ?
D. Why does the sun rise in the east ?

Dear Mary,
I’m glad to hear from you. Today I want to tell you something about my grandpa. He is seventy years old. When was young, he did very well at school, but his family was so poor that he had go to work instead of going to college. However, he keeps on reading and studying.
In the year 2001, China began to reform its university enrollment system, There is no age limit for the candidates. Last year, a lot of elderly people took part in the college entrance examinations.
Grandpa has decided to take this year’s entrance exams together with me. At present, we are busy preparing. Isn’t it interesting?
Best wishes!
