Dear Editor,
I’ve heard that original(原作) English books on some of our major subjects will be used next term.
It’s good news because we will learn something up-to-date from these books and improve our reading comprehension as well.
Using English textbooks is a tendency (趋向) nowadays. Some first class universities such as Beida and Qinghua are doing so. As a result, it will be easy and natural for students to pass the CET-4 even CET-6 of course, it may be a great challenge(挑战) for some students who are poor in English, but what I’m thinking about is the possibility of implementing (贯彻) this plan. As we know, it requires teachers to teach in two languages---Chinese and English.
However, few teachers in our college have this ability. Many can’t express their ideas in English, not to mention speak English fluently . This situation makes us frustrated (灰心) . When all the students are ready, what about our teachers?

An old Indian story says that the game of chess (国际象棋)was invented by Sissa Ben, Prime Minister of King Shirham. As soon as the invention was finished he gave it to the king, who was glad and asked him what he would like to have in return. To the king’s
------ 5------
surprise, what Sissa wanted seemed very little. “ Your Majesty,” said the minister, kneeling in front of the king. “I want nothing but some wheat. Please put a grain of wheat on the first square of the chessboard(棋盘), two on the second, four on the third, eight on the fourth… and so on, doubling the number for each following square, give me enough grains to cover the 64 squares of the chessboard.”
“You don’t ask for much, my honest servant. You might have asked for gold or money,” said the king and then ordered a bag of wheat brought to the palace.
But when the counting began, with one grain for the first square, two for the second, four for the third, and so on, the bag was emptied before the 20th square. More bags were brought, but the number of grain needed for the following squares increased so rapidly that the king soon realized that he was not able to keep his promise even with all the crops in the whole India! In fact, he would have needed 8,466,744,073,909,511,615 grains, which would be as much as that they would produce in about 2,000 years.

Trees should only be pruned(修剪)when there is a good and clear reason for doing so. First, pruning may be done to be sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape. Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut out diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against(碰)each other and thus causing wounds. The health of a tree may be
---- 9-----
encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the center and so preventing the tree movement of air.
One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will recover. Often there is a race between the recovery and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is in danger. It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce that risk(冒险)of death as far as possible. It is possible. It is necessary to make the area which has been pruned smooth and clean, for recovering will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the substances(物质)produced especially for the purpose. Pruning is usually done in winter, for then you can see the shape of the tree clearly without interference( 阻挠) from the leaves and it is, too. very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is of course, impossible to paint them properly.
71. pruning should be done to ______.
A. make the small branches thicker
B. make the tree grow taller
C. improve the shape of the tree
D. get rid of the small branches
72. Trees get unhealthy if the gardener ______.
A. allows too many branches to grow in the middle
B. forces them to grow too quickly
C. hurts some of the small side branches
D. does not protect them from the wind
73. Gardeners put a special substance on the tree to ______.
A. make a wound smooth B. prevent disease entering a wound
C. help a wound to dry D. cover a rough surface
74. A good gardener prunes a tree_____.
A. as quickly as possible B. regularly every year
B. at intervals(隔时)throughout the year D. occasionally when necessary
75. What was the author’s purpose when writing this passage? he wanted_____.
A. to explain how trees develop diseases
B. to give a general description of pruning
C. to give practical instructions for pruning a tree
D. to discuss different methods of pruning

Mount Baiyun is a place of interest. There are lots of tourists seeing the sights every day. Years ago, some of the tourists paid no attention to environmental protection. They threw waste such as waste paper, plastic bags and tins everywhere. Besides, some of them killed animals, caught birds, cut down trees and picked flowers. What was worse, they made fires to cook in the forest. Now great changes have taken place. When tourists leave, they take rubbish away with them. They no longer hunt animals Plants are also well protected. People carry their lunch so as not to start forest fires. Mount Baiyun has taken on a new look.
