Every human being has a unique (唯一的) arrangement of the skin on his fingers and this arrangement is unchangeable. Scientists and experts have proved the uniqueness of finger-prints and discovered that no exactly similar pattern is passed on from parents to children, though nobody knows why this is the case.
The ridge (脊状)structure on a person’s fingers does not change with growth and is not affected by surface injuries. Burns, cuts and other damage to the outer part of the skin will be replaced in time by new one which bears a reproduction of the original pattern. It is only when the inner skin is injured that the arrangement will be destroyed. Some criminals make use of this fact to remove their own finger-prints but this is a dangerous and rare step to take.
Finger-prints can be made very easily with printer’s ink. They can be recorded easily. With special methods, identification(识别)can be achieved successfully within a short time. Because of the simplicity and economy of this system, finger-prints have often been used as a method of solving criminal case. A suspected man may deny a charge but this may be in vain. His finger-prints can prove who he is even if his appearance has been changed by age or accident.
When a suspect leaves finger-prints behind at the scene of a crime, they are difficult to detect with the naked eye. Special techniques are used to “develop” them. Some of the marks found are incomplete but identification is possible if a print of a quarter of an inch square can be obtained.

Paris (Reuters) —France's Health Minister called on Thursday for the Justice Ministry to cut down immediately a major advertising campaign(活动) by the U.S. tobacco firm Philip Morris.
The ads, which have run for weeks in French newspapers, compare the dangers of breathing in second-hand smoke to eating biscuits, drinking milk and putting pepper(胡椒粉) on food.
Health Minister Herve Gaymard has written to Justice Minister Toubon for an early ruling on the ads, the Health Minister said in a statement.
Gaymard criticized the campaign after a Paris court on Tuesday banned part of the advertising after a complaint by French biscuit makers.
"The law of 10 January 1991 bans all direct or indirect advertising for tobacco. This advertising is all the more harmful to public health because it carries a message which means to deny the dangerous effects of passive smoking," the Health Ministry said.
Philip Morris said on Wednesday it would ask to call off the court's decision.
"We were surprised and shocked by the decision in France," said David Greenberg from Philip Morris on Wednesday.
The Paris court said it would fine the company one million francs for each act against the ban. The court found the advertisements "very harmful" to the interests of biscuit makers in France. The court also held that the campaign tried to popularize tobacco in breaking the public health law.
Comparative advertising and advertising for tobacco products are unlawful in France.
In its statement on Wednesday, Philip Morris said the biscuit makers misunderstood its message.
"Our campaign simply makes the point that
too often a scientific study is poorly stated to make a mountain out of a
molehill(小土丘), when in fact no meaningful
danger may be found on the basis of the findings reported in the study,"
the statement said.
65. What does Health Minister Herve Gaymard criticize?
A. Philip Morris firm's pollution
of the environment.
B. Philip Morris firm's request
against the court's decision.

production.

campaign.

advertising campaign
are _____.

B. biscuit makers in France
C. French smokers
D. None of the above
67. The statement by Philip Morris on Wednesday means
_____.
A. the company is trying to improve the quality of its tobacco
B. smoking is beneficial to one's health
C. the French court failed to make a fair ruling
D. smoking does no real harm to one's health

The above graphs are based on the results of a survey(调查) that asked 102 Japanese people from various fields what things made human life better and what things made it worse. In this survey, interviewees were asked to choose the top three 20th-century inventions and products in each of three following classes:those that brought the most happiness(Graph A);those that brought the most misfortune(Graph B);and those that brought both happiness and misfortune to humans(no graph is shown here).Answers from each of the 102 interviewees were graded. Three points were given for those selected first in each class, two points for those selected second and one point for those chosen third.
Graph A shows that antibiotic medicines(抗生素类药物),such as penicillin, came out on top in the survey as making the most important contribution to the improvement of the quality of life with 73 points. Many interviewees thought of such medicines in a purely positive light, with the opinion that they help humans realize a common hope — freedom from disease and longer life. Television was ranked second by a small gap. Many interviewees appreciated television's function in bringing information from all over the world into people's living rooms.
On the other hand, according to Graph B,nuclear arms, including atomic bombs, were repeatedly mentioned by interviewees as the invention that made people extremely unhappy. Many interviewees answered that the atomic bomb was the worst invention of the century.Other weapons created to kill humans in an indiscriminate(不加选择的) manner, like the land mine(地雷), were also ranked high.
Asked about what kinds of inventions or discoveries brought us both happiness and misfortune, interviewees said that automobiles, television and nuclear energy have their good points and bad points.Automobiles, for example, came first on the list of inventions with both positive and negative aspects(方面).Some interviewees pointed out that cars cause air pollution, though they have played an important role in creating today's convenient consumer society. Television came second on this list.An interviewee said,“Television is a wonderful tool for educating children, but it also robs them of time to study or communicate with family members.”
68.The purpose of this survey is to find out ____ .

worst invention
D. missiles were mentioned least because the interviewees thought the airplane played an
important role in the war
71. According to the article ,many interviewees thought that ____ .

Every artist knows in his heart that he is saying something to the public. Not only does he want to say it well, but he wants it to be something which has not been said before. He hopes the public will listen and understand ---- he wants to teach them, and he wants them to learn from him.
What visional artists like painters want to teach is easy to make out but difficult to explain, because painters translate their experience into shapes and colors, not words. They seem to feel that a certain selection of shapes and colors, out of the countless billions possible, is exceptionally interesting for them and worth showing to us. Without their work we should never have noticed these particular shapes and colors, or have felt the delight which they brought to the artists.
Most artists take their shapes and colors from the world of nature and from human bodies in motion and at rest; their choices indicate that these aspects of the world are worth looking at, that they contain beautiful sights. Modern artists might say that they only choose subjects that provide an interesting pattern, that there is nothing more in it. Yet even they do not choose entirely without reference to the character of their subjects.
If one painter chooses to paint a decaying(溃烂的) leg and another a lake in moonlight, each of them is directing our attention to a certain aspect of the world. Each painter is telling us something, showing us something, emphasizing something ---- all of which means that, consciously or unconsciously, he is trying to teach us.
72. It is hard to explain what a painter is saying, because ____.
A. most painters do not express themselves well
B. a painter uses unusual words and phrases
C. a painter uses shapes and colors instead of words
D. many painters do not say anything
73. The writer says that modern artists might say their choice of subject ____.
A. carries a message to the public
B. only provides interesting patterns
C. has no pattern or form
D. teaches the public important truths
74. The writer says that modern art contains ____ .
A. nothing but meaningless patterns
B. uninteresting aspects of the world
C. subjects chosen partly for their meaning
D. completely meaningless subjects
75. Implied but not stated:
A. A painting is more easily understood than a symphony(交响曲).
B. Art is merely the arranging of shape and color.
C. Every artist tries to say something to the public.
D. One must look beyond shape and color to find what the artists are saying.

Dear Editor,
I’m writing to tell you about our discussion we had on the afternoon of last Wednesday about the good and bad sides of setting off firecrackers during the spring festival. 20 boy and 20 girl students attended the discussion. As a result, 40% of them believe that setting off firecrackers certainly adds pleasure and joy to the festival, therefore, it is a wonderful tradition. But another 40% of the students think that setting off firecrackers causes air and noise pollution, and what’s worse, it sometimes causes terrible accidents to us and to our property. The other 20% have never thought about it or don’t care a bit. In my opinion, ……

W: You need to go to the Allied Irish Bank which is near the local shopping center, Dunnes Stores.

left.
M: It sounds a little bit difficult. How far is it from here?

Yes, you're right. I am from South Africa. I am not at all used to this cold weather, but I am glad to say that I have all the clothes for this freezing weather.
Before I came to Finland to attend this meeting two weeks ago, I had no idea what kind of clothes I should take along. Fortunately, my friend Julia has been to Northern Europe. Yes, she was a great help. She bought me some warm suits and dresses, business type of clothes, of course, of dark colours. She also bought me some skirts and blouses so that I could wear the same clothes in several different ways. Lively coloured dresses will give me a nice change from time to time. She also helped to choose a very warm raincoat and a pair of boots. Oh, how lucky I am to have such a helpful friend. She saved me a lot of trouble.

(Text10)
In American colleges and high schools, students often have dances at their schools on weekends. Students usually plan the dances themselves and do a lot of work for them. They do this in groups. There was a dance last Friday night at Peter and Mary's school. The dance was held in the dancing hall. Peter was in the clean-up group and Mary did some work to make the hall look good. Every student paid two dollars for the dance. They spent some of the money on decorations and they hired a band to play music. They also bought some food and drinks. The dance began at 7 o'clock. Nearly 500 people came. Most of them were students of Peter and Mary's school. Some students brought friends from other schools. Everyone danced and had a good time.
