阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项中,选出一个最隹答案。
(A)
The United States has recorded another huge monthly trade deficit. Figures for June show that import of goods was greater than export by more than 15,700 million dollars. This is nearly 2,000 million dollars more than the deficit in May because of an increase in import of oil and other goods. A BBC economics reporter says the figures came as a shock since they have been collected on the new basis which lead everyone to expect they would seem far better. The deficit for thew early June was in fact slightly higher, but this was under the old system. The news immediately led to the dollar falling on the currency markets and our reporter said that more seriously it would do nothing to control the pressure within the American Congress for more protectionist legislation designed to keep foreign goods out.
56. From the news report we know that monthly trade deficit figures for May show that import
of goods was greater than export ______.
A. by nearly 2,000 million dollars B. by about 17,700 million dollars
C. by over 13,700 million dollars D. by more than 15,700 million dollars
57. Which of the following best explains why the people were greatly surprised at the figures?
A. The figures have been collected under the old system.
B. The BBC economics reporter recorded the figures.
C. The deficit for the early June was much higher.
D. They had expected the figures would seem far better.
58. The news of trade deficit led to ______.
A. the increase of the imports
B. the decrease of the imports
C. the development of the economics
D. the dollars falling on the currency markets
59. The BBC reporter seems to think that trade situation in American between May and June is
______.
A. much better B. controllable C. serious D. hopeful
(B)
Telecommuting---by using the computer to work in some private places instead of office has been regarded as a solution to all kinds of problems concerning(关于)office work.
For workers it promises freedom from the office, less time wasted in traffic, and help with childcare problems. For management, telecommuting helps keep high performers on board, reduces lateness and absence from work, allows periods of being undisturbed for high-concentration(集中)tasks. In some area, such as southern California and Seattle, Washington, local governments are encouraging companies to start telecommuting programs in order to reduce rush-hour congestion and improve quality.
But these benefits do not come easily. Making a telecommuting program work requires careful planning and an understanding of the differences between telecommuting realities and popular images.
Many workers are attracted by rosy dreams of life as a telecommuter. A computer programmer from New York City moves to the quiet Adirondack Mountains and stays in touch with her office by computer. A manager comes into his office three days a week and works at home the other two. An accountant(会计)stays home to care for her sick child, she joins up her telephone modern connections and does office work between calls to the doctor.
These are powerful images, but they are a limited reflection of reality. Telecommuting workers soon learn that it is almost impossible to do office work and care for a young child at home at the same time. Before a certain age, young children cannot recognize what is the difference between work and family. If the parent is to get any work done, some child help is still necessary.
The management must also separate the reality and image, in most cases telecommuting is only for the worker’s situation, not for the management.
This is partly why, though the media report a lot, the number of companies with work-at-home programs remains small.
60. What is the main subject of the passage?
A. Business management polices.
B. Driving to work.
C. Enlarging the workplace by means of computers.
D. Computers for child-care purpose.
61. Which of the following does the author mention as a possible disadvantage of telecom-
muting?
A. Small children cannot understand the difference between work and family.
B. Computer technology is not advanced enough to meet the needs of every situation.
C. Electricity can destroy a project.
D. The worker does not have all the needed information at home.
62. Why does the author write the passage?
A. To show us directly whether telecommuting is good or not.
B. To tell us the advantages and disadvantages of telecommuting.
C. To encourage us to use the telecommuting program.
D. To tell us the telecommuting program can solve many workers’ problem.

The trees arrived by post, a half-open parcel. They were thin and straight, rather like arrows(箭)but with shiny leaves at one end and muddy roots at the other. Terry and his father took them down the garden and planted them in their prepared places. Terry had great hopes of the middle tree, now set in the memorial spot where Herry, his cat, run over, had been laid to rest a year before. The pine trees made a line down one side of the garden, where there was already a fifteen-foot stone wall between the garden and the back-yards of the Jenkins Street houses.
“Why do we want a row of trees as well as a wall?” Terry asked his father.
His father said, “For privacy(独处). These trees grow very thickly.”
His father’s love of privacy often puzzled Terry, who was not one to keep himself to himself, but he could see part of the point here. The houses in Jenkins Street were on higher ground. His friend Leslie lived in number twelve, and Leslie had only to stand on a box to see right over the wall.
“Will the trees grow higher than the wall?” Terry asked then.
“Oh yes, twice as high if not more. It’ll take a few years but they will grow.”
So they were going to have nine trees thirty feet tall, to keep them from being liked from above. Terry wondered why this was so desirable. He said, “Our garden is very pretty. Why can’t we let the people over the wall see it? That wouldn’t be showing off, would it?”
“No, I don’t think it would be,” his father said, “Yet some people might feel a bit less happy if they can always see a good thing that isn’t theirs. We don’t want to be the cause of any envy if we can help it.”
This consideration for other people’s feelings must be a grown-up thing, Terry thought. It was not his idea of how to run things. He said, “These trees-it seems a lot of trouble to go just to stop people being envious of us.”
His father looked at him. “It isn’t much trouble, Terry,” he said, “These trees will grow without help from us. They will be beautiful. And listen to them. You can already hear them whispering to us in the wind.”
68. The passage mainly deals with the topic of ____.
A. protection of environment B. relationship between neighbors
C. generation gap D. cause of envy
69. Part of the garden is called a memorial spot because ____.
A. a cat was buried there B. Herry had been run over there
C. Terry’s own tree was planted there D. it was in front of Leslie’s house
70. What did Terry not agree to?
A. Letting outsiders see the garden.
B. The height of the houses in Jenkins street.
C. The way Leslie managed to look over the wall.
D. His father’s care about other people’s feelings.

A. was proud of his garden and liked showing it off
B. was very sociable towards his neighbors
C. preferred to himself to himself
D. felt envious of the people in Jenkins street

Why is a full moon , yellower and bigger when it is coming up than it is higher in the sky?
That’s a good question about something that we all can see. Let ‘s talk about the moon’s color first.
We see the moon only because of the sunlight that falls on it and is reflected . Actually , the moon is not a very good reflector , because its surface is all rocks and dirt . We see it in almost its true color when it is high in the sky .
When the moon first comes up , its light reaches our eyes after an extra –long through the atmosphere .There are lots of particles(微粒)scattering (分散)light in that long path .Blue light is scattered more than other colors ,which means that it doesn’t reach your eyes .The light that is left over looks yellow to your eye .
Now about the other question –why the
moon seems to change in size .That’s more complicated. It’s not an effect of
the atmosphere ,the way color is ; it’s not caused by something fooling your
eyes .It seems ,instead ,to be caused by something that fools your brain –an
illusion(错觉).
Here’s a drawing that creates an illusion .The two cones are really
the same size .But the rest of the drawing makes the right –hand
cone seem farther away .Your brain knows that faraway objects are
really larger than they look .It decides that the right –hand cone must be larger because it seems to be farther away .
Similarly ,when you seen the moon just come up over a line of trees or houses –or whatever makes the horizon(地平线)-it may be that your brain decides that the moon must be larger because it seems to be farther away .
72. The moon doesn’t reflect the sunlight very well because .
A. it is high in the sky B. its surface is rough
C. its surface is white D. it isn’t a good reflector
73. Which statement is NOT TRUE according to the passage ?
A. The sunlight falls on the moon and is reflected .
B. The moonlight yellow when it comes up .
C. In the course of the moon’s rising ,the moonlight first looks blue and then yellow.
D. In the atmosphere ,many small particles make the moonlight lose its blue color.
74. Which statement is true according to the passage ?
A. In the course of its rising ,the moon is getting smaller and smaller .
B. The size of the moon is more complicated than its color.
C. The atmosphere has the same effect on the moon’s size as on its color .
D. The change in the moon’s size is caused by an illusion while that in its color is caused by the atmosphere .
75. After reading the passage ,you can possibly answer one of the following questions. Which one ?
A. Why does the sun look bigger when it rises over the horizon ?
B. Why is the sun bigger when it rises over the horizon ?
C. Why does the sun look golden ?
D. Why does the sun rise in the east ?

第9段
The word“pub”is the short form for“public house”in Great Britain. It is supposed to be the Englishmen’s favorite meeting place, where they can get together with friends over a pint of beer and talk about football, or horse racing, or business. Pubs are usually open from 11 a.m. to midnight.
You may notice that the pub is the Englishmen’s meeting place. It is not quite respectable for a woman to go into a pub alone. She must have a man to go with her. Perhaps that’s partly the reason why pubs depress me-they are intended mainly to provide for male interests.
Most Englishmen have their favorite local, where they can escape from the pressures of family life or work, and if they are lucky they tell their trouble to a pretty bar-girl. Indeed, many men dream of retiring from their 9 to 5 jobs and buying a little country pub, where they imagine they’ll be the host of a seven nights a week party.
第10段
We have a big well-equipped library in our school. There is a librarian in charge of it. Students of the school may borrow books from the library but they may not lend them to others without the permission of the librarian. Students may borrow three books at a time. They may keep the books for 2 weeks. If they do not return them by the end of this period, they may be refused permission to borrow any more.
There are a number of rules for good behavior in the library. Students ought to put back the books in their correct places on the shelves. They ought to leave the magazines and newspapers in good order. They ought to handle the books carefully and keep them in good condition. Students may not talk or disturb others in the library. They ought to keep quiet when they are passing along outside the library.

Dear Mr and Mrs Cross,
My name is Li Hua. I am a first-year student of Beijing University. I’m 20 years old and I’m from Shengzhou, Zhejiang Province. Yesterday I had the pleasure of reading your advertisement in the newspaper. It really attracted me because I’m looking for an odd job during my university vacation to pay for next term’s tuition.
I’m glad to tell you that I like children very much, just as my mother does. She has worked in a kindergarten for about 20 years. I have a younger brother. I always take care of him. My father is a good cook. I learned to cook from him. When my mother was away, I had to cook. The whole family enjoy eating the dishes I make.
Would you please tell me whether you have a spare room for me to live in and how much I will get a week?
I am looking forward to your reply.
Best wishes to you!
Yours,
Li Hua
