As the policeman walked up to him the man spoke up quickly.
"It's all right, officer." he said, reassuring (使放心). "I'm just waiting for a friend. It's an appointment made twenty years ago. Sounds a little funny to you, doesn't it? Well, I'll explain if you'd like to make certain it's all straight. About that long ago there used to be a restaurant where this store stands—'Big Joe' Brady's restaurant."
"Until five years ago," said the policeman, "it was torn down then."
The man in the doorway struck a match and lit his cigar. The light showed a pale, squarejawed face with eager eyes and a little white scar (伤疤) near his right eyebrow. His scarfpin (围巾扣) was a large diamond strangely set.
"Twenty years ago tonight," said the man, "I dined here at 'Big Joe' Brady's with Jimmy Wells, my best friend, and the finest man in the world. He and I were raised here in New York; just like two brothers, together. I was eighteen and Jimmy was twenty. The next morning I was to start for the West to make my fortune. You couldn't have dragged Jimmy out of New York; he thought it was the only place on earth. Well, we agreed that night that we would meet here again exactly twenty years from the date and time, no matter what our conditions might be or from what distance we might have to come. We believed that in twenty years each of us ought to have our wish worked out and our fortunes made, whatever they were going to be."
"It sounds pretty interesting." said the policeman. "Rather a long time between the meets, though, it seems to me. Haven't you heard from your friend since you left?"
"Well, yes, for a time we kept in touch," said the other, "but after a year or two we lost track of each other. You see, the West is a pretty big place, and I kept running over it pretty lively. But I know Jimmy will meet me here if he's alive, for he always was the truest, dependable old friend in the world. He'll never forget. I came a thousand miles to stand at this door tonight, and it's worth it if my old partner turns up."
The waiting man pulled out a handsome watch, the lid of it set with small diamonds.
"Three minutes to ten," he announced. "It was exactly ten o'clock when we parted here at the restaurant door."

SAN FRANCISCO——The "Reading Wizard" (巫师), an 11-year-old boy, whose offer to read to children without being paid at a local library was refused by libraries, will get to read to younger kids after all.
Mayor Willie Brown last Wednesday ordered San Francisco Public Library officials to allow John O'Connor to read to preschool children to get them interested in books and stop them from watching television and video games.
"I didn't expect this kind of attention." John said, "It's just shocking."
John has chosen his first book, "The King's Giraffe", and made up fliers inviting neighborhood children, aged from three to six, to the Presidio Branch every Wednesday afternoon. He planned to call himself the "Reading Wizard" and wear a special hat, fake glasses and a black coat.
But his idea was refused—on the phone, in person and finally with a letter from Toni Bernardi, the chief of the library's children and youth services. Using terms like "ageappropriate material" (适龄读物), she wrote that only library workers are allowed to read to children.
John then went to a member of the city board of supervisors (督导董事会), who advised him to write letters to the library officials.
"Our libraries are supposed to turn kids on, not to turn them off." Brown said he enjoyed "the creative idea, the sense of civic duty and the caring for others that John clearly showed us."

The eastern Indonesian island of Komodo is proving a hit with adventurous tourists eager to catch a glance of the world's largest lizard species (蜥蜴物种). The island is the home of the huge lizard called the Komodo dradon.
A later species of the Jurassic period dinosaurs (侏罗纪时期恐龙) 130 million years ago, the Komodo dragon is in danger and has been placed under protection by the Indonesian government.
The huge lizard is called "Buaya Darat" by the local people who show great respect for the species. Tales handed down over generations of islanders speak of the dragon warning people of getting close to crocodiles.
The animal can reach a length of three meters when fully grown, gain a weight of about 135 kilograms and may live to an age of about 100 years. It digs a hole in the ground as deep as 9 meters and lay eggs —up to 30 at a time —that hatch in April or May. The newly hatched lizards, about 45 centimeters long, live in trees for several months.
Komodo dragons have been known to eat smaller members of the species and sometimes even other grown-ups. The Komodo dragon was first discovered in 1912 by a group of fishermen who protected themselves from a storm in the Banda Sea on the island.
Various species of the Komodo dragons are also found in Asia, Australia and Africa, but it is only on Komodo and the western tip of the neighboring island of Flores that they grow up to three meters long.
