Having taken a room at the hotel at which he had been instructed to stay, Small wood went out ; it was a lovely day ,early in August , and the sun shone in an unclouded sky .He had not been to Lucerne since he was a boy ,but remembered a covered bridge ,though not clearly ,a great stone lion and a church in which he had sat , bored yet impressed while they played an organ(风琴);and now wandering along a shady quay (码头)he tried not so much to find his way about a half—forgotten scene as to reform in his mind some recollection (回忆)of the shy and eager boy ,so impatient for life ,who so long ago had wandered there .But it seemed to him that the most lively of his memories was not of himself ,but of the crowd ; he seemed to remember the sun and the heat and the people ; the train was crowded and so was the hotel ,the lake steamers were packed and on the quays and in the streets you found your way among the holiday—makers .They were fat and old and ugly and strange .
Now ,in wartime ,Lucerne was as deserted as it must have been before the world discovered that Switzerland was the play—ground of Europe .Most of the hotels were closed , the streets were empty ,the boats for hire rocked (摇晃)idly at the water’s edge and there was none to take them , and in the avenue by the lake the only persons to be seen were serious Swiss taking their dogs for their daily walk .Smallwood felt happy and , sitting down on a bench that faced the water ,surrendered (听任)himself to the sensation .The blue water , snowy mountains , and their beauty hit you in the face .So long at all event , as the fine weather lasted he was prepared to enjoy himself .He didn’t see why he should not at least try to combine pleasure to himself with advantage to his country .

The U.S. Department of Labor statistics (统计)show that there is an oversupply of college—trained workers and that this oversupply is increasing .Already there have been more than enough teachers ,engineers ,physicists, aerospace experts ,and other specialists .Yes colleges and graduate schools continue every year to turn out highly trained people to compete for jobs that aren’t there .The result is that graduates cannot enter the professions for which they were trained and must take temporary jobs , which do not require a college degree.
On the other hand ,there is a great need for skilled workers of all sorts: carpenters, electricians , mechanics , plumbers ,TV repairmen.
These people have more work than they can deal with, and their annual incomes are often higher than those of college graduates .The old gap that white—collar workers make a better living than blue—collar workers no longer holds true .The law of supply and demand now favors the skilled workmen.
The reason for this situation is the traditional myth that college degree is a passport to a prosperous future .A large part of American society matches success in life equally with a college degree. Parents begin indoctrinating (灌输)their children with this myth before they are out of grade school . High school teachers play their part by acting as if high school education were a preparation for college rather than for life .Under this pressure the kids fall in line .Whether they want to go to college or not doesn’t matter. Everybody should go to college ,so of course they must go .And every year college enrollments (入学)go up and up ,and more and more graduates are overeducated for the kinds of jobs available to them .
One result of this emphasis on a college education is that many people go to college who do not belong there .Of the sixty percent of high school graduates who enter college ,half of them do not graduate with their class .Many of them drop out within the first year .Some struggle on for two or three years and then give up .
60.It’s implied but not stated in the passage that .
A.many other countries are facing the same problem

C.fewer students will prefer to go to college in the future

61.Which of the following is NOT a reason why college enrollments go up every year ?
A.Many people believe that the only way to success is a college education .
B.Many parents want their children to go to college.
C.High school teachers urge their students to go to college.
D.Every young man and woman wants to go to college .
62.By saying that “many people go to college who do not belong there ,” the author means
that .
A.many people who are not fit for college education go to college
B.many people who do not have enough money go to college
C.many people who go to college drop out within the first year .
D.many people who go to college have their hopes destroyed .
63.We can infer from the passage that the author believes that .
A.every young man and woman should go to college
B.college education is a bad thing
C.people with a college education should receive higher pay
D.fewer people should go to college while more should be trained for skilled jobs

There is a new type of small advertisement becoming increasingly common in newspaper classified columns .It is sometimes placed among “situations empty”, although it does not offer anyone a job ,and sometimes it appears among “situations wanted”, although it is not placed by someone looking for a job either .What it does is to offer help in apply (申请)for a job .
“Contact us before writing your application”, or “ Make use of our long experience in preparing your curriculum vitae (履历表)or job history”, is how it is usually expressed .The growth and apparent success of such a specialized service ,of course ,proves the growing importance of the curriculum vitae or job history, with the suggestion that it may now qualify as an art form in its own right .
There was a time when job seekers simply wrote letters of application . “Just put down your name ,address , age and whether you have passed any exams ,”was about the average level of advice offered to young people applying for their first jobs when I left school .The letter was really just for openers ,it was explained ,and everything else could and should be saved for the interview .And in those days of full employment the technique worked .The letter proved that you could write and were available (useful )for work .Your eager face and intelligent replies did the rest .
Later ,as you moved up the ladder, something slightly more complex (复杂的)was called for .The advice then was to put something in the letter , which would show you are different from the rest .It might be the daring way . “Your search is over .I am the person you are looking for”, was a widely used trick that occasionally succeeded .Or it might be some special feature specially designed for the job in view .
There is no doubt ,however ,that it is the increasing number of applications with university education at all the process of attractive necessities that has led to the greater importance of the curriculum vitae .
64.The new type of ads which is appearing in newspaper columns .

When you refer to your brain .you should probably say “brains”. Most modern scientists studying the brain have concluded that there are three major parts of our brain ,that each is separate from the others ,and that each has its own functions and different processes (过程)
Brain 1 includes the spinal cord ,the medulla—which sits directly on top of the cord—and the middle section of the brain .It includes the controls for involuntary functions like breathing and digestion ,along with the nerves necessary for reproduction .The structure of the human brain is little different from the structures of the brains of mammals and reptiles (爬行动物).Brain 1 is apparently responsible both for daring and social behavior .
Brain 2 is an area surrounding brain 1. In this second brain are the various glands located in the brain ,such as the pituitary (脑垂体)and amygdala (扁桃体).Scientists studying brain 2 are sure that human emotions such as excitement , fear ,and love are centered here ,as well as the senses of taste and smell .Memory and learning are also controlled by brain 2.
Brain 3 is the neocortex , the thick covering that surrounds the top and side parts of the brain .This is the “gray matter” we often think of when we speak of the brain .Only the higher orders of animals have brain 3,and none is as highly developed as the human neocortex . Brain 3 sends information from the other two brains to body and receives data from the body .It is apparently brain 3 that makes us fully human .Brain 3 allows us to stand straight ,to plan and foresee the future ,to see ,to speak ,to write ,to use symbols and tools ,and to remember .Brain 3 apparently also acts as a unifying control of the other two brains .As scientists continue to study the brain ,they discover specific areas that control particular functions of the body land particular emotions , It is interesting to consider about the future of the old idea of “the mind”, As we learn more about our three brains ,will we be more or less awed (fearful but respectful )by our own complexity ?

71.The passage suggests .

working on

Japanese students work very hard but are very unhappy .They feel great pressure from their parents to do well on school and in college .Most students are always being told by parents to study harder so that they can have successful future .Although this may be good advice for those students who are very bright ,it can have very bad results for many students who are not quick enough at learning .
Unfortunately ,a number of students actually kill themselves .Others are after comfort on using drugs .Some students ,however ,do bad things with groups of bad people and turn to crime .Many of them have tried very hard at school but ,in spite of all their tries ,have failed in certain examinations and have disappointed their parents .Such students feel that they are less important than everyone else they meet and leave school before they have finished their study .
It is surprising that although most Japanese parents are anxious for their children to so well at school, they so not help them on any way. Many parents feel that they are unable to help their children with their lessons and that it is the teachers’ job to help their children.
To make matter worse ,a lot of parents send their children to special schools called juku—cram schools. These schools are open during the evenings and on weekends ,and their only purpose is to prepare students to pass exams ; they do not try to educate students on any real sense of the words .It thus comes as a shock to realize that almost three quarters of the junior high school population attend these cram schools .
Ordinary Japanese schools usually have rules about everything from the length of students’ hair to their clothes and things in their school bags .Child psychologists now think that such strict rules often lead to a feeling of being unsafe and being unable to fit into society .They regard the rules as being harmful to the development of each student .They regard the rules as being harmful to the development of each student. They believe that no sense of moral values is developed and that students are given neither guidance nor training in becoming good citizens .

Dear editor.
Nowadays in our city, more and more people own cars. I think there are good reasons for owning a car. First, with a car a person can get around freely, without spending a lot of time. Second , a car is comfortable to travel in. Finally, it is safe to drive a car than bicycle.
However I am afraid more and more cars will cause air pollution. What is more , more traffic jams and accidents are happening every day.
Personally, I hope the government should control the number of the cars to let us have a clean, quiet environment.
