All those things you want to do—when are you going to do them? TV takes away your real life.”
A study of 20,000 British children published in 1999 compared TV viewing habits with social attitudes. Children who watched over four hours TV per day were more likely to agree with statements like“I am not worth much as a person,”and “there is nothing I can do about the world’s problems.”
White Dot organizes an annual(每年的)“TV turn off week”,which will start form April 23 this year. The group said that last year over 5 million people in Britain and the United States supported the event, mainly concerned parents and teachers.
This year they want more people to join in. That’s why a spokesman, David Burke, went into the enemy camp. In a TV programme shown in Britain in late March he put the case against television. Whatever our differences as human beings are we all think we’re more like the rest of the animal world than we realize. It is said that we share 40 per cent of our genetic(遗传的)structure with the simple worm.
But that fact has helped Sir John Sulston win the 2002 Mobel Prize for Medicine. Sir John is the founder of the Sanger Institute in Cambridge, which was set up in 1992 to get further understanding of the human genome(染色体组).
To help them do this, they turned to the worm. The nematode(线虫类的)worm is one of the earliest creatures on planet earth. It is less than one millimeter long, completely transparent and spends its entire life digging holes through sand. But it still has lots to say about human life, and what can be done to make it better.
What the worm told Sir John and his colleagues was that each of the cells in the human body is programmed like a computer. They grow, develop and die according to a set of instructions that are coded in our genetic make-up.
Many of the diseases that humans suffer from happen when these instructions go wrong or are not obeyed. When the cell refuses to die but carries on growing instead, this leads to cancer. Heart attacks and diseases like AIDS cause more cell deaths than normal, increasing the damage they do to the body. Sir John was the first scientist to prove the existence of programmed cell death.
67.Sir John Sulston got a Nobel Prize for Medicine because he has .
A.found that human beings are similar to the worm
B.got the fact we share 40 per cent of our genetic structure with the simple worm

deaths.

Sulston.
C.The programmed human life.
D.Dangerous diseases.

“Most episodes(片段)of absent-mindedness—forgetting where you left something or
wondering why you just entered a room—are caused by a simple lack of attention,” says Schacter.
“You’re supposed to remember something, but you haven’t encoded it deeply.”
“Encoding”, Schacter explains,“is a special way of paying attention to an event that has a
major effect on remembering it later. Failure to encode properly can create annoying situations. If
you put your mobile phone in a pocket, for example, and don’t pay attention to what you did
because you’re involved in a conversation, you’ll probably forget that the phone is in the jacket
now hanging in your wardrobe(衣柜).”“Your memory itself isn’t failing you,”says Schacter.
“Rather, you didn’t give your memory system the information it needed.”
Lack of interest can also lead to absent-mindedness.“A man who can recite sports statistics(数
据)from 30 years ago,” says Zelinski ,“may not remember to drop a letter in the mailbox.”Women
have slightly better memories than men, possibly because they pay more attention to their
environment. And memory depends on just that.”
“Reminders can help prevent absent-mindedness,” says Schacter. “But be sure the reminder is
clear and available, ”he says. If you want to remember to take medicine with lunch, put it on the
kitchen table—don’t leave it in the medicine chest and write yourself a note that you keep in a
pocket.
Another common episode of absent-mindedness: walking into a room and wondering why you’re there. Most likely, you were thinking about something else.“Everyone does this from time to time,”says Zelinski. The best thing to do is to return to where you were before entering the room, and you’ll likely remember.
71.Why does the writer think that encoding is important?
A.It helps us understand our memory system better.
B.It enables us to remember something from our memory.
C.It expands our memory ability greatly.
D.It slows down the process of losing our memory.
72.Why do women have better memories than men?
A.They have a wider variety of interests.
B.They are more dependent on the environment
C.They pay more attention to things they like.
D.They are more interested in what’s happening around them.
73.Why can a note in the pocket hardly serve as a reminder?
A.Because it will easily get lost.
B.Because it’s not clear enough for you to read.
C.Because it’s out of your sight.
D.Because it might get mixed up with other things.
74.What do we learn from the last paragraph?
A.If we pay more attention to one thing, we might forget another.
B.Memory depends to a certain extent on the environment.
C.Doing something again helps improve our memory.
D.If we keep forgetting things, we’d better return to where we were.
75.What is the passage mainly about?
A.The process of gradual memory loss.
B.The causes of absent-mindedness.
C.The influence of the environment on memory.
D.A way of encoding and remembering.

听第10段独白,回答第17至20题。
Good morning. I am Professor Armstrong, and I am your laboratory instructor. This class is intended as a necessary part of the course, which Dr Smith will be in charge of. This class will meet twice a week. This laboratory begins at nine. I expect you to be on time. I do not intend to wait for the latecomers or repeat what has already been covered if you miss the explanation. And do not arrive late and interrupt your neighbor. You may as well not come if you can’t be on time.
Attendance is equally important. If you miss three lab classes, you’re dropped from the labs-no excuses. You can’t complete the course without completing the lab.
Besides, safety is key here. It’s very important to keep things neat and clean, dress properly, and be careful. You may not eat, drink or smoke in the laboratory and you should always clean the counter and wash your hands both before and after the class. Long hair must be tied back. Large clothing must not be worn. Any laboratory accident must be reported immediately.
I hope you’ll enjoy the laboratory. It’s a wonderful place, and all the requirements I’ve just mentioned are to be followed. We will begin today by learning about the microscope.
