Albert Einstein was probably the most famous scientist of the twentieth century. He changed scientific thinking in the modern world. He is generally considered as the greatest physicist who ever lived. What’s more, he devoted a lot of his time and energy to working for human rights and progress.

In 1933, while Einstein was visiting England and the United States, the Nazi government of Germany took all his things away, including his position and his citizenship(公民权). Einstein then settled down in the United States. In 1939, Einstein, who lived peace-afraid of a world in which only Hitler would had an atomic bomb(原子弹)-tried hard to persuade President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a famous letter to have the United States start uranium research. That Germany, after all, had no bomb, and that the first bomb would fall on Japan, could not have been expected. After the war, Einstein never stopped working for peace and reducing the number of soldiers in the world.

Although he wasn’t connected with any accepted religion( 宗教), Einstein felt that trust in a personal God was too special an idea to be suitable to the God at work in this universe, but he never believed that the universe was one of chance or disorder. The universe to him was one of pure law and order. He once said, “God may know everything, but he is not hateful.”

Most chemical experiments begin and end with a balance. The four instruments above all measure weight. They are used in different places .Bathroom scales(type. A) are quite cheap(about £ 12) and are found in most homes. They are not very sensitive(灵敏的); the smallest weight that can move the pointer from zero is 500g, and they can weigh people up to about 150kg. Type B is used at airports and many railway stations to weigh luggage. It is slightly more sensitive than type A and, of course, much bigger and more expensive. It can usually take up to 500g. Type C, commonly used in food shops and post offices, is more expensive. It is more accurate( 精确的) than the luggage scales and is sensitive to 10g. Many shops now use even more accurate scales that show price and weight and print this information out on a receipt for the customer. By far the most accurate balance of all, of course, is type D, which is a scientist’s precision(精密) instrument, sensitive to 0.0001g and with a total weighing capacity of no more than170g. This analytical(分析) balance is electronic, and is far more expensive than the other three types, costing up to £ 1500. It, too, is equipped with a digital display(数字显示器)  of the weight on its pan, and an automatic print-out device(自动打印装置)。

In 1977, a dead writer of detective stories(侦探故事) saved the life of a nineteen-month-old baby in a most unusual way. The writer was Agatha Christic, a gentle married lady and one of the most successful writers of detective stories in the world.

In the June of 1977, a baby girl became seriously ill on Qalar near saudi Arabia. Doctors were unable to find out the cause of her illness, so she was flown to London and sent to Hammersmith Hospital. A team of doctors hurried to examine the baby only to discover that they, too, were puzzled by the very unusual signs of illness. While they were having a discussion about the baby’s illness, a nurse asked to speak to them.

“Excuse me,” said Nurse Marsha Maitland, “but I think the baby is suffering from thallium poisoning(铊中毒).”

“What makes you think that?” Dr Brown asked. “Thallium poisoning is very rare(罕见的) .”

“A few days ago, I was reading a novel called ‘A Pale Horse’ by Agatha Christie,” Nurse Maitland explained. “In the book, somebody uses thallium poison, and all the signs are exactly the same as the baby’s.”

“You are very careful and you may be right,”, another doctor said. “We’ll carry out some tests and find out whether it’s thallium or not.”

Tests showed that the baby had indeed been poisoned by thallium. Once they knew the cause of the illness, the doctors were able to give the baby the correct treatment. The President: Let me answer the knowledge economy(经济) question first. And let me answer by telling you what I have tried to do in the United States. I have tried to produce a situation in America in which the doors of universities and colleges are open to every young person who has sufficient academic achievement(足够的文化程度) to get in, that there are no financial burdens(经济负担) of any kind. And we have not completely achieved it, but have made great deal of progress.

Now, why would I do that? because I believe that the more advanced an economy becomes, the more important it is to have a higher and higher percentage(百分比) of people with a university education. Let me tell you how important it is in the United States.  We count our people-every 10 years we do a census and we count the number of the American people and we get all kinds of information on them. In the 1990 Census, younger Americans who had a college degree were very likely to get good jobs and have their incomes grow. Younger Americans who had two years or more of university education were likely to get good jobs and have their incomes grow.  Younger Americans who didn’t go to university at all were likely to get jobs where their incomes went down and were much more likely to be unemployed.

And the more advanced China’s economy becomes, the more that will be true of China –the more you will need very large numbers of people getting university education and technical education. So I think it is very, very important.

72. The President mainly talked about_____________.

A.  the university education in the United States

B.  the university education in China

C.  the differences in university education between the United States and China

D.  the importance of university education in the development of economy

73. According to the President, when economy develops ___________.

A.  more people will get university education

B.  more people with a university education are needed

C.  more people will get good jobs

D.  more people will have their pay raised

74. the underlined word in Paragraph 2 probably means ________in the USA.

A. 资源调查 B. 财政预算

C. 人口普查 D. 教育规则

75. In which of the following years will a census be done in the United States?

A. 1999 B. 2000 C. 2001 D.2002
