第三部分:阅读理解(共20小题,每小题2分,共40分)

阅读下面短文,从每题四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。

A

There are two basic differences between the large and the small firm.In the small firm you operate primarily through personal contacts,in the large firm you have established“固体的程序”.In the small firm you have, moreover, immediate effectiveness in a very small area. You can see the effect of your work and of your decisions right away, once you are a little above the ground floor. In the large firm even the man at the top is only a cog(嵌齿)in a big machine. To be sure, his actions affect a much greater area than the actions and decisions of the man in the small organization, but his effectiveness is remote, indirect, and difficult to see at first sight. In a small and even in a middle-sized business you are normally exposed to all kinds of experiences, and expected to do a great many things without too much help or guidance. In the large organization you are normally taught one thing thoroughly. In the small one the danger is of becoming a jack-of-all-trades and master of none.In the large one it is of becoming the man who knows more and more about less and less.

There is one other important thing to consider:do you derive a deep sense of satisfaction from being a member of a well-known organization-General Motors, the Bell Telephone System, the government?Or is it more important to you to be a well-known and important figure within your own small pond? There is a basic difference between the satisfaction that comes from being a member of a large, powerful, and generally known organization, and the one that comes from being a member of a family, between impersonal grandeur(伟大)personal-often much too personal-intimacy (亲密);between life in a small office on the top floor or a skyscraper and life in a crossroads gas station.

56.In a large enterprise, .

A.new technology is employed quickly B.all people work efficiently

C.one’s effectiveness is felt very slowly D.one can get promotion easily

57.In the first paragraph,a“jack-of-all-trades”means .

A.a person who doesn’t know anything about business

B.a person who is very capable as a businessman

C.a person who knows a little bit of everything

D.a person who is very knowledgeable about trade

58.We can conclude from the first paragraph that the writer .

A.prefers to work for a large firm. B.does not mention his own preference

C.prefers to work for a small firm D.is against anything that goes to its extreme

59.In the second paragraph, the contrast(相比)between the organization and the family is

   employed to show .

A.how necessary a deep sense of satisfaction is

B.what satisfaction means to different types of people

C.how families may differ from one another

D.what large firm can offer to ordinary families

B

To get cash out in the 21 st century, you won’t need a bank card,a PIN(个人识别编号)or even have to move a finger. You will simply have to look the cash machine straight in the eye, declares National Cash Registers,a multinational company that makes automated teller machines,or ATMs.NCR has shown its first example machine that it believes is the future of banking.Instead of asking you for your PIN on a screen, the Super Teller-Stella for short, asks you orally through a loudspeaker to look straight ahead while an infrared camera turns to your head, then your eye,and finally takes an infrared plotograph of your iris(虹膜).For indentification(识别)purposes,an iris picture is better than a fingerprint, with around 256 noticeable characteristics compared with 40 for fingerprints. This means that the chances of someone else being recognized in your place is about 1 in 1020.Once you’ve been idetified,Stella greets you by name and says:“Would you like cash or a statement?”An infrared port allows the machine to send a bank statement straight to your pocket computer.

Greenspace facilities(设施)are contributing to an important degree to the quality of the city environment.Fortunately it is no longer necessary that every lecture or every book about this subject has to start with the proof of this idea.At present it is generally accepted, although more as a self-proved statement than on the base of a closely reasoned scientific proof.Recognizing the importance of greenspaces in the city environment is a first step on the right way, this does not mean, however, that enough details are known about the functions of greenspace in towns and about the way in which people are using these spaces. As to this subject I shall within the scope of this lecture, enter into one aspect(方面)only, namely the recreative function of greenspace facilities.

The theoretical separation of living, working traffic and recreation which for many years has been used in town and country planning, has in my opinion resulted in more attention for forms of recreation far from home, while there was relatively little attention for improvement of recreative possibilities,in the direct neighbour-hood of the home.We have come to the conclusion that this is not right, because an important part of the time which we do not pass in sleeping or working,is used for activities at and around home.So it is obvious that recreation in the open air has to begin at the street door of the house. The city environment has to offer as many recreation activities as possible, and the design of these has to be such that more required activities can also have recreative aspect.

The very best standard of living is nothing if it is not possible to take a pleasant walk in the district,if the children cannot be allowed to play in the streets because the risks of traffic are too great,if during shopping you can nowhere find a spot for enjoying for a moment the nice weather,in short,if you only feel yourself at home after the street door of your house is closed after you.

63.The importance of greenspaces in the city environment .

A.has been recognized B.is paid little attention to

C.is accepted on the base of scientific proof D.is still unknown

64.For many years town and country planning has    .

A.brought living areas and places of entertainment close together

B.separated recreation facilities far from home

C.improved recreative possibilities in the neighbourhood

D.enabled people to reach the best standard of living

65.The word“recreation”in the passage probably means, .

A.activities done for pleasure or enjoyment

B.doing something again in a creative way

   C.doing something important after work

   D.required activities done after work

66.According to the author, greenspaces should be designed .

A.to reduce the number of recreative activities

B.to attract more and more people

C.for people to use more conveniently

D.for people to do recreative activities at the street door of the house

67.The main idea of this passage is that .

A.attention must be paid to the improvement of recreation

B.greenspace facilities should be used better to improve the quality of life

C.the city environment is providing more recreative activities

D.we should try our best to raise our living standard

D

Millions of people pass through the gates of Disney’s entertainment parks in California,Florida and Japan each year. What makes these places an almost universal attraction? What makes foreign kings and queens and other important people want to visit these Disney parks?Well, one reason is the way they’re treated once they get there. The people at Disney go out of their way to serve their“guests”,as they prefer to call them, and to see that they enjoy themselves.

All new employees, from vice president(副总管)to part-time workers, begin their employment by attending Disndy University and taking “Traditions I”.Here, they learn about the company’s history, how it is managed and why it is successful. They are shown how each department relates to the whole. All employees are shown how their part is important in making the park a success.

After passing“Traditions I”,the employees go on to more specialized training for their special jobs.No detail is missed.A simple job like taking tickets requires four eight-hour days training. When one ticket taker was asked why it took so much training for such a simple ordinary job,he replied,“What happens if someone wants to know where the restrooms are, when the parade starts or what bus to take back to the campgrounds?…We need to know the answers or where to get them quickly. Our constant aim is to help our guests enjoy the park.”

Even Disney’s managers get involved (包括在内)in the daily management of the park.Every year, the managers leave their desks and business suits and put on special service clothes. For a full week, the bosses sell hot dogs or ice cream, take tickets or drive the monorail(单轨车)and take up any of the 100 jobs that make the entertainment park come alive. The managers agree that this week helps them to see the company’s goals more clearly.

All these efforts to serve the public well have made Walt Disney Productions famous.Disney is considered by many as the best mass service provider in America or in the world. As one long-time business observer once said,“How Disney treats pople, communicates with them, rewards them,is in my view the very reason for his fifty years of success…I have watched, very carefully and with great respect and admiration, the theory and practice of selling satisfaction and serving millions of people on a daily basis, successfully. It is what Disney does best.”

68.The first day they come to Disney parks, all new employees .

In most towns today, you can see teenagers standing over electronic machines with flashing lights, shooting at spaceships from other planets and dropping bombs on strange monsters(恶魔).The machines have names like Space Warrior,Dark Invader and so on.It used to be believed that damage was done only to those strange visitors from outer space, but now it seems that they are striking back.

Other strange aches and pains also are likely to affect the elbows and shoulders.

Another even more alarming problem is shown by the case of a 17-year-old girl which was recently reported in the British Medical Journal. She had been playing various kinds of electronic games for more than two hours a day.Her father repaired games and machines and she could use the cassettes and systems in his workshop as often as she liked. One day, after playing a game called Dark Invader, she lost consciousness(晕倒)and fell to the floor.

M:I fell off my bike and hurt my arm.

(Text 2)

M:What have you been with recently?

M:I’ve been busy mailing postcards to my classmates.

(Text 3)

W:Are you scared about leaving home and going to college?

M:Yes,a little bit.Leaving home is a part of growing up,though.

(Text 4)

W:Bring your raincoat with you.

M:No need.It doesn’t seem to rain.The sun is shining.

W:But these days it usually rains in the afternoon.

(Text 5)

M:Do you think you could possibly work late this morning?

W:Work late?

M:I’m afraid there’s some work we really must finish this evening.I can’t possibly do it myself.

W:I suppose so,if you really think it’s necessary.

M:Thank you. We’ll have to work about an hour’s overtime. That’s all.

(Text 6)

M:Excuse me.I am a stranger here and I’ve lost my way.

W:What can I do for you?

M:Could you please tell me the way to the museum?

W:That’s easy.Go straight ahead and take the second turning on your right.Walk down that street to the end.

M:How long will it take me?

W:About fifteen minutes.

M:By the way,where can I get a city map?

W:I am sure you can get one at the gate of the museum.

M:Many thanks to you.

W:My pleasure.

(Text 7)

M:How do you do!

W:How do you do!What can I do for you?

M:Well,I’ve just got off an international flight, and I’m not sure which mode of transport I should make use of on my trip.So I need some advice.

W:Go on,please.

M:I’m planning to travel to some famous places-Beijing,Xi’an and Guilin in China. Which mode of transport is the best for me?

W:Well, that depends on how much time and money you’re going to spend on your trip.

M:I see.I’m travelling at my expense,so I want to save both time and money spent on my way.

W:Oh,I know what you mean. Now that you are in Beijing, you should visit the Great Wall, the Summer Palace, the Imperial Palace and Tian’anmen Square as well.During your trip in Beijing, make use of the underground which is faster and cheaper.

M:How can I get to Xi’an?You know I have to go to Beijing after I’ve finished all my travelling.

W:It’s much cheaper to take a train to Xi’an than to fly.In my opinion, you should take the train to Xi’an and then to Guilin. You will not only save money but also have a close beautiful scenic trip. After that, fly directly from Guilin to Beijing.

M:Good!That’s a really good idea.I’ll do as you have suggested.Thanks.Thanks a lot.

W:Not at all!Good-bye!

M:Good-bye!

(Text 8)

W:What do you do,Peter?

M:I’m a student but I’m working with my teacher for two weeks for the summer vocation.

W:You won’t have a holiday,will you?

M:Oh,yes,I have three weeks’holiday.I’m flying to Japan and India. One week in Japan and two weeks in India.

W:That’s treat.

(Text 9)

W:Can you help me?

M:What seems to be the trouble?

W:There is something wrong with my bike.

M:Oh,your bike seems to have become loose. That’s dangerous.Without a good brake, you can’t control your speed.Accidents are more likely to happen. You’d better have it repaired as soon as possible.

W:Where can I find a repairman?

M:There is one at the corner of the street near the post office. It is about 150 metres away.

W:Will it take long to get it fixed?

M:Just 15 minutes.

I am working in the Green Park Zoo in southeast of London.I am animal keeper. One morning I went to work as usual. When I got to the zoo,my fellow told me that a young lion escaped from the zoo because of the hurricane the night before.Mr Charles the manager told us to get ready to search for the lion at any time when needed.

At about twenty in the afternoon,we were told to set out at once, for it was reported that the lion had appeared in the bushes in a lady’s garden. We drove our car as fast as we could. When we got there we found the garden had already been surrounded by the police. And the lion could be seen in the bushes, eating something. We walked quietly towards the bushes. As we got near,I pointed my pipe at the lion and fired. The lion made a sudden angry noise and struggled to its feet, but failed. It fell over and lay still. In this way we caught the lion and took it to the zoo.

The Weak Are the Slaves of the Strong?

An old man was sitting in an armchair at home, reading his newspaper.Beside him lay a dog sleeping soundly.Suddenly the old man decided to leave home for a while, but he couldn’t go out with his slippers on.So he woke up the dog and let it fetch the shoes for him.Out of his expectation, the dog didn’t even stand up,but just barked with two eyes closed again. The old man was completely puzzled. As he was wondering what was happening,he saw the cat coming towards him with the pair of shoes in its mouth.Seeing this,he was totally dumbfounded.

Is this the law that the weak are the slaves of the strong?
