A

Cigarette smoking is a widespread habit in the United States today. About forty-three percent of the adult men and thirty-one percent of the adult women smoke regularly. It is quite encouraging to note, however, that millions of people have given up the smoking habit. Seventy-five percent of the male population and forty-six percent of the female population have smoked cigarettes at some time during their lives, but twenty-six percent of these men and eleven percent of these women have stopped smoking. The number of persons who have given up smoking is increasing.

Men as a group smoke more than women. Among both men and women the age group with the highest proportion (比例) of smokers is the age group 24---44.

Income, education and occupation (职业) play a part in determining a person's smoking habits. City people smoke more than people living on farms. Well-educated men with high incomes are less likely to smoke cigarettes than men with fewer years of schooling and lower incomes. On the other hand, if a well-educated man with a higher income smoked at all, he is likely to smoke more packs of cigarettes every day.

The situation is somewhat different for women. There are slightly more smokers among women with higher family incomes and higher education than among the lower income and lower educational groups. These more highly educated women tend to smoke more heavily.

Among teenagers (青少年) the picture is similar. There are fewer teenage smokers from upper-in-come , well-educated families, and from families living in farm areas. High school students who are preparing for college are less likely to smoke than those who do not plan to continue their education after school. Children are most likely to start smoking if one or both of their parents smoke.

56. Why does the author say that cigarette smoking is a widespread habit in America?

   A. Because over seventy percent of Americans smoke cigarettes.

   B. Because more than seventy percent of American adults smoke today.

   C. Because not small proportion of American adult men and adult women smoke regularly.

   D. Because more and more American young people start smoking.

57. What notable(引人注意的) thing makes the author feel quite encouraging?

   A. The number of smokers no longer increases. B. Those who smoke smoke less.

   C. Those who smoke have given up smoking habit.

D.Not a few people who once smoked have stopped smoking.

58. Who in the United States smoke most according to the passage?

   A. Adult men. B. Men at the age of 24 to 44. C. Adult women. D. Young people.

59. Who among the teenagers are likely to smoke?

  A. Children from well-educated families.   B. Those living in farm areas.

  C. Those who don't want ot receive higher education. D. Those whose parents once smoked.

Probably you have seen photographs of the Grand Canyon (峡谷) , the great valley in the desert country of Arizona. But you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty. The Grand Canyon is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.

The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years. Slowly, the river cut down through hard rock. At the same time, the land was rising. Today, the canyon is one and a half kilometres deep and 445 kilometres long. The oldest rocks at the bottom of the canyon are more than one billion years old. The width varies from about 200 metres to 29 kilometres across. The rim(边缘)or top of the canyon is about 2,300 metres above sea level on the South Rim, and about 3,000 metres on the other side, the North Rim. As a result, there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the canyon. The South Rim is dry desert country. The North Rim has tall forests.

The canyon looks different at different times of day, and in different seasons and weather. At sunrise and suneet the red, gold, brown, and orange colours of the rocks are especially clear and bright. In winter, the Canyon is partly covered with snow.

The view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the best. Most visitors come to the South Rim and stay in campgrounds or hotels. Every point along the canyon's edge offers a different view.

The North Rim of the Canyon is quieter. It takes all day to drive there from the South Rim because there is only one bridge across the Colorado River. On the way, you go through Navado Indian lands, and a colourful pink desert called "The Painted Desert."

You can walk down into the Grand Canyon, or you can go down on the back of a mule(小型电动机车) . You can also take a boat trip down the Colorado River, and camp on the beaches at night. But whether you see the Grand Canyon from the top or the bottom, it will be an experience that you will never forget.

   A. the South Rim B. the North Rim C. the bottom D. the top of a tree

Americans often say that there are only two things a person can be sure of in life; death and taxes. Many people feel that the United States has the worst taxes in the world.

Taxes are the money that people pay to support their government. There are generally three levels of government in the United States: federal, state, and city; therefore, there are three types of taxes.

Salaried people who earn more than four to five thousand per year must pay a certain part of their salaries to the federal government. The percentage varies for different people. It depends on the salaries. The federal government has a two-level income tax: that is, 15 or 28 percent. $ 17,850 is the cut-off. The tax rate is 15 percent below $ 17,850 and 28 percent above.

The second tax is for the state government; New York, California, or any of the other forty-eight states. Some states have an income tax similar to that of the federal government. Of course, the percentage for the state tax is lower. Other states have a sales tax, which is a percentage charged to any item which people buy in the state. Some states use income tax and sales tax to raise their revenuse(税收).

The third tax is for the city. This tax comes in two forms: property tax (residents who own a home have to pay taxes on it) and excise tax, which is collected on vehicles in a city. The cities use this money for education, police, public work and so on.

Since Americans pay such high taxes, they often feel that they are working one day each week just to pay their taxes. People always complain about taxes. They often say that the government misuses their tax dollars. They all believe that taxes are too high in this country.

68. In the US, taxes are collected to provide revenues for ______.

  A. the federal government          B. the state government

  C. the city government D. the three levels of government

69. How much money does an American earning $ 40,000 per year pay to the federal government as income tax according to the passage?

  A. 28% of the income. B. 15% of the income. C. $ 17,850. D. $ 5,000.

70. What happens to buyers when a sales tax is collected?

   A. They have to pay more than what the item costs.

B.They can pay less than what the item costs.

   C. They have to pay exactly what the item costs.

   D. They will all give up buying the item.

71. After reading the passage, we might feel that Americans seem to be ______.

   A. satisfied with their taxes         B. proud of their taxes

   C. unhappy about their taxes D. very angry at their taxes

E

Ours has become a society of employees. A hundred years or so ago only one out of every five Americans at work was employed, that is, worked for someone else. Today only one out of five is not employed but working for himself. And when fifty years ago "being employed" meant working as a factory laborer or as a farmhand, the employee of today is increasingly a middle class person with a formal education, holding a professional or management job requiring intellectual and technical skills. Indeed, two things have characterized American society during these last fifty years; middle class employees have been the fastest-growing groups in our working population-growing so fast that the industrial worker, that oldest child of the Industrial Revolution, has been losing in numerical importance despite the expansion of industrial production .

Yet you will find little of anything written on what it is to be an employee. You'll find a great deal of doubtful advice on how to get a job or how to get a promotion. You can also find a good deal of work in a chosen field, whether it be the mechanist's trade or book-keeping(记帐;会计) . Every one of these trades requires different skills, sets different standards, and requires a different preparation. Yet they all have employeeship in common. And increasingly, especially in the large business or in the government, employeeship is more important to success than the special professional knowledge or skill. Certainly people fail more because they do not know the requirements of being an employee than because they do not adequately have the skills of their trade; the higher you climb the ladder, the more you get into administrative (管理的) or executive(行政的)work, the greater the emphasis on ability to work within the organization rather than on technical abilities or professional knowledge.

72. It is implied that fifty years ago _____.

  A. eighty percent of American working people were employed in factories

  B. twenty percent of American intellectuals(知识分子)were employees

  C. the percentage of intellectuals in the workforce was almost the same as that of industrial workers

  D. the percentage of intellectuals working as employees was not so large as that of industrial workers

73. According to the passage, with the development of modern industry, ______.

   A. factory laborers will overtake intellectual employees in number

   B. there are as many middle-class employees as factory laborers

   C. employers have attached great importance to factory laborers

   D. the proportion of factory laborers in the total employee population has decreased

74. According to the writer, professional knowledge or skill is _____.

   A. less important than awarcness(意识) of being a good employee

   B. as important as the ability to deal with public relations

   C.more important than employer-employee relations

   D. as important as the ability to work with other relations

75. From the passage it can be seen that employeeship helps one _____.

   A. to be more successful in his career B. to be more specialized in his field

   C. to gain professional ability           D. to develop his professional skill

M: You're right. After studying a language, practice is very useful.

W: I always go to movies, and whenever I can, I watch TV or listen to the radio in the language I'm trying to learn.

M: But I think without some knowledge of the language first, you can't understand all these.

W: Sure. First it's a good idea to study grammar, vocabulary...

M: ... and listening and reading.

7. M: Hi, Cindy!

  W: Hi, Dave.

M: You'll never guess who I saw yesterday at the bookstore.

W: There are millions of people in this city. Of course I can't guess!

  M: I saw Herbert.

W: Herbert? Who is Herbert? Is this someone I know?

M: You remember Herbert. He was my chemistry teacher.

W: Oh, yes, I met him at the party at your place. I thought he moved to Alaska.

M: He came back. He said Alaska was too cold.

W: I agree with him. I was in Alaska on vacation once, and it was freezing. What's he doing here now? Is he teaching again?

M: No, he opened his own private business.

  W: What kink of business?

M: He wants to get together for lunch this afternoon and tell me about it. Would you like to join us?

W: I'd love to. Thanks for asking me.

8. W: What's this then?

M: It's my geography. Miss Williams. The Map of China you set us.

W: But this should have been given in last Thursday?

  M: Yes, I know. I'm sorry.

W: Well. What's your excuse then this time?

M: My mother's been ill and my father has gone to Hong Kong on a business trip, so I had to stay at home.

  W: Oh, yes!

  M: It's true. Miss Williams.

W: But didn't you play football for the school on Wednesday afternoon?

M: Urn... yes, I thought I could finish it at night.

W: Um.. .And I saw you playing football with your classmates on Saturday.

M; But she was better then.

  W: Oh?

M: I've brought a note. Here it is.

W: All right. But do your homework on time this week.

  M: Yes, Miss Williams.

9. M: Miss Todd, could I speak with you?

  W: Sure. Come on in.

M: I'm here because I want to change roommates.

W: Really? That surprises me. I thought you and David were good friends.

M: We were. You see. We knew each other before. We are from the same hometown, but it looks like we had different reasons for coming to college.

  W: How so?

M: Well, David is really into having fun. That's great. But he has so many people in our room all the time that I can't study. And the stereo is on constantly.

W: Have you talked to him about it.

M: Yes, but he just doesn't take me seriously.

W: I see. Here's what we can do. Let me talk to David, and then you see how it goes. Just one week.

  M: But, Miss Todd...

W: If you still have a problem at the end of the week, I will let you change a room. Come back to see me next Monday.

10. Here is the news. A survey of the number of shellfish on the west coast beaches between Freetown and Albertville will start in early May. Senior Fisheries Officer, Mr. Doug Fraser, says the scientists will be digging up a strip of sand along the beaches at certain low tides in May and June. Depending on what they find, they will make a recommendation to the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries on whether or not the shellfish season should be abandoned and digging for shellfish on these beaches should be prohibited. Mr. Fraser says the survey is being carried out because many people come to the beaches to dig for shellfish, particularly at night, and if this continues there is a fear that shellfish numbers could drop to zero.

Gate Eight or the eighth gate。 Lesson One or the first lesson。

It turned out (to be) a fine day.

The tower stood there.

27.C view指从某个地方如窗口可见的部分景观,scenery表“风景”,sight指“看见,瞥见”,如catch stght of,at the sight,in sight,out of sight等。

It will be some time+before从句表示“多长时间之后……”,It be some time+since从句表示“自……

Boys will be boys. would则表示过去总是做某事,相当于used to。

31.A 选项与in the fence并列作宾补,keep the dog tied up,把狗拴住。

32.C put sth.into operation

They were waiting for me when I arrived。

35.B in that case

rush into the room表示“冲进房去”。

make a quick turn into即turn quickly into,“快速转弯走进”。

52.A value可表示“益处,重要性,有用性”,如a man full of value有用的人。

55.D miss the chance是“错过机会”,take the chane是“抓住机会”,本句是说没有错过这个机会。

Two weeks on a Caribbean Island才合适,因此选D。

The rim or top of the canyon is about 2,300 metres above sea level on the South Rim, and about 3,000 metres on the other side, the North Rim.

The view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the best.

70.A 由短文第四段可以知道在有sales tax的地方,a percentage charged to any item which people buy,购物者除付原价外,还要缴纳一定的百分比的税。

如the greater the emphasis on the ability to work with the organization than on technical abilities,很多人因为只有专业技巧而不知道做雇工的要求,所以失败了。

76.famous前加a。

77.√。

78.we前加when。 It was two o'clock when he came.(他回来时到两点了。)It was at two o'clock that he came.(他是两点钟来的。)

79.them---us。上文说“我和我父母”,因此要说“我们三人”,the three of us。

80.visiting---visited。

8l.picture---pictures。

82.passes---passed。

83.down删去。come表示“来临,出现”,如National Day is coming。

84.and---but。

85.at删去。the (very) moment (that)用作连词,表示“—…

第二节

Dear Editor, .

I'm writing to tell you about the discussion we've had about whether an entrance fee should be charged for parks. Opinions are divided on the question. 60% of the students are against the idea of entrance fees. They believe a public park should be free of charge. People need a place where they can rest and enjoy themselves. Charging entrance fees will no doubt keep some people away. What is more, it will become necessary to build gates and walls, which will do harm to the appearance of city.

On the other hand, 40% think that fees should be charged because you need money to pay gardeners and other workers, and to buy plants and young trees. They suggest, however, fees should be charged low.

                                                                  Yours truly,

                                                                   LiHua
