I still remember---my hands and my fingernails still remember---what used to be prepared for us on our return to school from the holidays. The school yard would be covered with fallen leaves, lying around here and there in piles. In some places there were even more than just piles of them; it would be like a muddy sea of leaves.
"Get that all swept up!" the headmaster would tell us. "I want the whole place cleaned up, at once!
At once! There was enough work there, very hard work, too, to last for a week. Especially since the only tools with which we were provided were our hands, our fingers, and our nails.
"Now see that it's done properly, and be quick about it," the headmaster would say to the other pupils, "or you'll have to answer for it!"
So at an order from the older boys we would set to work. If the work was not going as quickly as the headmaster expected, the big boys, instead of giving us a helping hand, used to find it simpler to beat us with branches pulled from the trees.
In order to avoid these blows, we used to bribe our "kings" with the cakes or other good food which we used to bring for our midday meal. And if we happened to have any money on us, the money would change hands at once. If we did not do this, the blows were doubled. They would hit us so badly that even a dumb person would have realized we were being beaten not to make us work harder, but to make us obey. Thus we would be only too glad to give up our food and money.
Occasionally, one of us worn out by such cruel beating would have the courage to complain (抱怨) to the headmaster. He would, of course, be very angry, but the punishment the older boys received was always very small---nothing compared with what they haddone to us. And the fact is that however much we complained, our situation did not improve in the slightest.

C. he suffered a lot from the hard work D. he would remember his school life forever

A. they wanted to make the younger work quickly and properly
B. they were too lazy to work themselves

D. they knew the headmaster would do no punishment to them
58. When the younger boys complain to the headmaster ______.
A. it made no difference to them B. it only made the matter worse
C. he would become very angry with them D. he gave the older punishing blows
59. Which do you think can be the best tide for this passage?

When I told my family that I was thinking of taking a cooking job, the roars of laughters were rather discouraging. No one believed that I could cook at all, as I had never had a chance to practise at home. Our cook had ruled the kitchen for thirty years and regarded the pans, stove and all the kitchen fittings as her own property (财产) .
I once stole into the kitchen when I thought she was asleep in her room to try out an omelette. Noiselessly I removed a frying pan from its hook and the eggs from their cupboard. It was the pop of the gas that woke her, I think, for I was just breaking the first egg when a pair of slippered feet moved round. the door and a shout of terror caused me to break the egg on the floor. This disaster (灾难), together with the fact that I was using her very special beloved and cared-for frying-pan, upset her so much that she locked herself in the storeroom with all the food and we had to make our Sunday dinner of bananas.
If the family weren't going to be helpful I would look for a job all by myself and not tell them about it till I had got one. I had seen an agency (代理处) in a local paper, so as soon as there was no one about to say "Where are you going?" I rushed out of the house in search of it.
I sat on the edge of a chair and could see my nose shining out of the comer of my eye. I thought perhaps it was a good thing; it might look more determined. The woman at the desk said it would be difficult to get a job without much experience. "But," she said, "I've got someone who needs a cook badly. " She wrote down a number, and my spirit went up as I took the slip of paper she held out to me, saying, "Ring up this lady. She wants a cook. You would have to start tomorrow by cooking dinner for ten people. Could you manage that?"
"Oh, yes." I said---never having cooked in my life.
63. One reason for the author's lack of practice in cooking was mat _____.
A. no one in her family would like her to practise cooking
B. everything in the kitchen belonged to the cook
C. the cook would never allow her to do any cooking
D. she was not yet born when the cook came to the house

A. unsatisfied B. nervous C. curious D. uncomfortable
65. The family had to have bananas for dinner that Sunday because _____.
A. the cook was on strike B. they preferred bananas
C. the author cooked badly D. no one in the family had cooking ability
66. From the passage we can infer that ____
A. the author couldn't have the necessary ability to do the cooking work
B.the author had much confidence (信心') in her cooking ability
C. the author went to the agency against her family's will
D. all that was used for cooking belonged to the cook
D
There are two kinds of memory short-term and long-term. Information in long-term memory can be recalled at a later time when it is needed. The information may be kept for days or weeks, while information in short-term memory is kept for only a few seconds, usually by repeating the information over and over. The following experiment shows how short-term memory has been studied.
Henning studied how students who are learning English as a second language remember a list of words. The subjects in his experiment were 75 college students. They represented (代表) all levels of ability in English: beginning, intermediate, advanced, and native-speaking students.
To begin, the subjects listened to a recording of a native speaker reading a paragraph in English. Following the recording, the subjects took a 15-question test to see which words they remembered. Each question had four choices. The subjects had to circle the word they had heard in the recording. Some of the questions had four choices that sound alike. For example, weather, whether, wither and wetter are four words that sound alike. Some of the questions had four choices that have the same meaning. Method, way, manner and system would be four words with the same meaning. Finally the subjects took a language proficiency test.
Having found that students with a lower proficiency in English made more of their mistakes on words that have the same meaning, Henning's results suggest that beginning students hold the sound of words in their short - term memory, and advanced students hold the meaning of words in their short-term memory
67. Henning made the experiment in order to find _____.
A. how to develop'students' ability to use English
B. how students learn English as a second language
C. how long information in short - term memory is kept
D. how English words are remembered by non - native - speaking students

B. Henning gave a separate test on words to the subjects.
C. It is easier to test short-term memory than long-term memory.
D. Information in short- term memory is different from that in a long - term memory.
70. It can be learned from Henning's results that ______.
A. it is easy to remember words that sounds alike
B. it is difficult to remember words that have the same meaning
C. beginners have difficulty distinguishing (区别) the pronunciation of words
D. students at different levels of ability have different ways to remember words
71. The passage is mainly about ______.
A. short - term memory B. long - term memory C. English learning D. language proficiency

Treasure hunts (寻宝) have excited people's imagination for hundreds of years both in real life and in books such as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island. Kit Williams, a modem writer, had the idea of combining the real excitement of a treasure hunt with clues (线索) found in a book when he wrote a children's story, Masquerade, in 1979. The book was about a hare, and a month before it came out Williams buried a gold hare in a park in Bedfordshire. The book contained a large number of clues to help readers find the hare, but William put in a lot of "red herrings", or false clues, to mislead them.
Ken Roberts, the man who found the hare, had been looking for it for nearly two years. Although he had been searching in the wrong area most of the time, he found it by logic (逻辑), not by luck. His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start. He had realized that the words: "One of Six to Eight" under the first picture in the book connected the hare in some way to Katherine of Aragon, the first of Henry VB's six wives. Even here, however, Williams had succeeded in misleading him. Ken knew that Katherine of Aragon had died at Kimbolton in Cambridgeshire in 1536 and thought that Williams had buried the hare there. He had been digging there for over a year before a new idea occurred to him. He found out that Kit Williams had spent his childhood near Ampthill, in Bedfordshire, and thought that he must have buried the hare in a place he knew well, but he still could not see the connection with Katherine of Aragon, until one day he came across two stone crosses in Ampthill Park and learned that they had been built in her honour in 1773.
Even then his search had not come to an end. It was only after he had spent several nights digging around the cross that he decided to write to Kit Williams to find out if he was wasting his time there. Williams encouraged him to continue, and on February 24th 1982, he found the treasure. It was worth£3000 in the beginning, but the excitement it had caused since its burial made it much more valuable.72. The underlined word "them" (paragraph 1) refers to _____.
A. red herrings B. treasure hunts C. Henry VIII's six wives D. readers of Masquerade
73. What is the most inportant clue in the story to help Ken Roberts find the hare?
A. Two stone crosses in Ampthill. B. Stevenson's Treasure Island.

M: Well, remember I had promised you I'd help you study for your exams?
W: Yes, I remember.
M: Well, I don't know how to put this. You know I hate to have to tell you this, but I'm afraid I can't keep my promise.
W: Oh? Why not?
M: Well... you see... I have to go to the station to pick up my uncle this afternoon. He is coming to Shanghai and will stay with us for a couple of days. Otherwise, I'd be able to help you study for the exams.

10. Here is the news. A man will appear in the city court this morning charged with firing a gun recklessly. Near the center of town last night, a team of armed police was called out at 8:30 p.m. after a motorcyclist reported a man had fired at him with a gun and the bullet glanced off his crashed helmet while he was riding along Palm Street. An hour later a car driver was stopped by a man with a gun and asked for money on North Street. The robbery was unsuccessful and the driver escaped unhurt. After receiving further information around 10:30 p. m., the team of armed police surrounded a house on Main Street where a 30-year-old man was arrested. No one was injured in either of the incidents, nor during the arrest of this man.

I knew nothing about it until I read the paper.
28.A 应对别人的道歉用Forget it.或Don't think any more about it.
give out表示“分发、发布;发出(热、气味),” send out表示“发送、派遣;发出(光、气等)”,turn out表示“结果是”,rule out的意思是“排除、拒绝考虑”。
It can't be better(好极了)。
33.B 如果选A则说would like to have,因为本题意表示“本来想去,而实际上没来”,was to have done stb.
35.A come about表示“发生”,如 How did it come about?
47.B make money
48.B 此处提出一个建议,“禁止这种报刊”,下文紧接着说the more you want to forbid it,the more…,因此选B。
52.A do harm to为固定搭配,意思是“……
54.D the year readers即文首的young people。
57.C 从文中的描述可知,那些在男孩用枝条抽打我们,为了免受皮肉之苦,我们就用从家中带来的食品、钱去贿赂他们,于是we would be only too glad to give up our food and money.不然的话the blows were doubled。
58.A 选A还是选B在短文最后一句however much we complained, our situation did not improve in he slighest,可见情况没有一点改变。
61.B 关于降雨,A地under clearing skies(晴天),C地,只有周六cloudy with some showers,D地a foot snow,只有B地白天showers likely,晚上rain likely,选B。
Our cook had ruled in the kitchen for thirty years and regarded…as her own property。
Henning studied how students who are learning English as a second language remember a list of words,其后的实验也是围绕这一目的进行的。
69.B 全文讲述短期记忆中不同的人群记住了什么东西,实验的目的也是表明how short-term memory has been studied,因此A、C、D三项不对。
71.A 在第一段就交待清楚了,…show how short-term memory has been studied,全文讲述的实验也是围绕这一点来展开的。
72.D 由上下文可以看出,文中的them不是指"red herrings",不是clues,因为them前有mislead,可见them指人,指上文的readers。
His success came from the fact that he had gained an important clue at the start.
One of Six to Eight得到启发亨利八世的第一个妻子(a-d),然后是b-c-e。
76.in删去 this month, that day之类的时间状语如果是介词in、on就不可用。
79.√。
80.was后加like What is your life like?
81.such→so 用so many结构。

Xiao Ming used to send a lot of cards to his friends when New Year came. He didn't stop doing this until Professor Zhang came to give a lecture. In his lecture, Professor Zhang said that too many trees had been cut down every year, because the cards we sent widely were made from trees. The professor also said that without trees, the soil was easily washed
away by rainwater, which would lead to serious floods in some areas. Xiao Ming was shocked at Professor's Speech and realized that it was not right to send cards. Nowadays he is used to sending his wishes to friends by telephone.
